Explore an exercise of creating new shapes using just black and white.
Try to make at least 15 (or more) different shapes you've never made before. You can use ink, paint, or collage. Small to medium size is best.
This exercise will get you to play around with 'figure-ground' techniques. To me, 'Figure-ground' is just a fancy term for noticing the difference between the main object (foreground) and the space around it (background). Often, you make the background first to find what the foreground will look like, and sometimes it's the other way around.
This exercise might seem tough because you need to make clear shapes in the foreground and the background. But don't worry if you're stuck.
The main aim is to discover new shapes. If it gets too hard, just focus on making a foreground or a background. Don't stress about the other one.
