Cheryl Taves is a visual artist and Creativity Coach from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Her passion lies in helping artists build creative resiliency, deepen their connection to their work, and produce authentic and personal art.
Cheryl's coaching focuses on navigating the inherent challenges of the creative process through mindfulness, curiosity, and self-compassion to better manage the emotional labor that often accompanies it.
Drawing from her personal experience and working with hundreds of artists as a part of the Art2life Coaching Team, Cheryl launched Insight Creative in 2018. She offers 1 to 1 coaching, alongside her signature 12-week online group coaching program, The Artist’s Mindset, to artists all over the world.
Cheryl is also the creator of the Insight Creative : 30 Day Sketchbook Challenge Course. This self-guided online course offers lifetime access to a 30-day sketchbook practice that enhances an artist's connection to their art-making through consistent daily engagement with their creative work, while strengthening their artist’s mindset - an essential skill for
artists to have.
Cheryl's art practice centers on mixed media painting on panel and drawing and painting on Mylar. Her work explores the elements of structure and gesture, allowing for an edgy
tension and elegance to coexist, exuding a gritty beauty. Her interest lies in the nuanced language of abstraction and the act of relationship, particularly areas of growth and dissolution.
Graduating from the Victoria College of Art in 2004, Cheryl established The Store Studio, an artist-run studio and gallery space in downtown Victoria, with three other contemporary artists. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries in Canada and the United States and is currently represented by the Jorge Mendez Gallery in Scottsdale,
Arizona.
Cheryl is also a long-standing member of a weekly critical discussion group led by mentor and painter Bill Porteous. With a focus on abstraction, providing critical feedback and dialogue around her work and the work of her contemporaries, these in-depth discussions in art-making continue to strengthen Cheryl’s engagement with abstraction and the creative position that informs her work.
An online Critical Discussion Group, working with a selection of international artists, is also part of Cheryl’s focus. As a co-facilitator in this group, led by Bill Porteous, Cheryl finds tremendous value in assisting artists with this aspect of their development.
Her home studio is a light-filled space located in a rural community just outside of Victoria, situated in the nature that influences her work. The cycles of decay and renewal offer reminders of recurrent themes that occupy her formal concerns - change, growth, deconstruction and reconstruction.
