I find it hard to believe Harry was a late starter in art because he's so good. I would have expected that he showed considerable talent in school as a kid. Near as I can find from searches, Holbein wasn't sold in America for a while because it hadn't been tested to meet ACMI safety standards. The primary concern would be supplies purchased by schools--not that schools have the budget for Holbein products.

Harry, I just want to say how thankful I am that you still do product review videos today. Your story about art supplies donated to the women's shelter has sparked a new donation avenue for myself. I am a regular clothing donator including items for job interviews by the request of the facility but the art supply donations really spoke to me about how they might even be more beneficial than the clothing for self-esteem and recovery. Thanks for sharing your story. Looking forwards to your book.

This was the absolute BEST program for me to listen to, start my day with. At times there have been a few tears as I relate sooo very well to Harry's physical disabilities!! I inherited a spinal deformity and had the first major surgery as a teenager. From my neck (T-3) down almost to the base of my spine (through L-4), two rods were put in and fusion done. Fast forward to age 72 today, and sooo many surgeries between back then and now, life is challenging, to say the least. I became totally disabled by the time I reached age 40. Several decades ago I was STRONGLY Encouraged to allow myself REGULAR Art time, after therapists saw my artistic ability, as well as how emotionally calming "doing art" is for me. Because of the mess in my spine I can't always handle sitting to work on my Watercolor painting. So, when I HAVE to cry "uncle" and basically go back to a more prone position on my ice or heating pads, I work with my colored pencils, Watercolor pencils, markers, and can still create. Now I know about Harry. Have already gone to his website, FB Page, and Patreon channel, to follow him. He is obviously a "kindred spirit" for me!!! It's a blessing to have and know "somebody out there" who is walking in my shoes, understands the physical pain and issues, and is also striving to still "go forward" and make a difference in this world. Thank you sooo very much, Lindsey, for introducing me to Harry!!! I greatly needed this!!!

@@annkazunas7207 oh Dear Ann, now I am REALLY Glad that I took the time to write my comment to Lindsey here. Hugs!! Don't know about you, but I am having to live by myself, trying each day to take care of myself and do what I have to do. My only living family member is my 39 year old daughter who lives on another state. I wish I could live with her and her husband, but I haven't been welcomed. So, I hold tight to Jesus Christ, and do the best I can. Doing my art helps, and comforts me. God bless you.

I think the toxic ingredient thing might have to do with the state of California. California has legislation that essentially dictates that any product containing any chemical that is known to be toxic, and could become actively toxic in a hypothetical circumstance (burned, inhaled, ingested) needs to carry a warning label (you have probably seen such labels on some of your favourite supplies before). So for such a product to be sold in the USA, they must carry the label. This does not mean the product will be toxic when used for its intended use - just that it contains a substance known to be toxic. So for example a piece of MDF furniture may carry the warning because it might contain formaldehyde in the glue (which is a carcinogenic if inhaled), but you wouldn't inhale your furniture. However, in a fire, you might inhale the smoke, or if you were sawing furniture, you might inhale and ingest particles. So the California law aims to encourage manufacturers to rethink using materials that could be toxic in circumstances they may have not have thought of. Unfortunately the law makes no distinction between genuinely extremely toxic things to use, and things which could be potentially toxic but are not if used for their purposes, or are only very lightly toxic I a way that would not impact the average person unless used in massive quantities over a long period. So Californians are used to these warnings and know when to ignore or when to be concerned (they just treat them as red flags for research, essentially) … and the rest of the world sees these out of context and gets scared by them, which I imagine is why some brands are reluctant to carry the California warnings and are therefore not available for sale in the USA. I am not from the USA but I know all this because I did a deep dive into it out of interest as another artist here in the UK was very worried about using a supply that carried the California warning due to it containing carbon. The supply was paradoxically both marked non-toxic… and carried the warning label about toxic chemicals. To further put your mind at rest: I have heard that apparently gas stations carry such warnings in California too (benzene for example is highly toxic), and most people use them without fear, so it's very relative...! I imagine Holbein were very worried of getting into trouble if it looked like they were trying to bypass state legislation, and they probably didn't want to slap massive, out-of-context and scary-looking labels that might have scared their worldwide buyers on all their products either, hence their overreaction to Harry! I wonder if they have since reformulated to avoid the labels or if they are now able to produce packages specifically for the US market?

Hi Lindsay and Harry! This was wonderful!! I enjoyed seeing you two chat! I just wanted to weigh in on the Holbein issue quickly. I work with Holbein as a brand ambassador. When I first started working with them, I asked them why it had taken so long for their colored pencils to be available in the U.S. From my understanding, it is not that they had a toxic ingredient in them. It is that the packaging did not yet have the ASTM D-4236 safety labeling. It's a process to get the ASTM D-4236 labeling, and in the U.S. art supplies need to have that safety label in order to be sold here. As they were becoming more popular here in the U.S., they began the process to get the proper labeling for them to legally be sold here. However, while they were in the process, third-party companies were siphoning the pencils in from Japan without the proper labeling, which, of course, is a big no-no. Once the evaulation process was done and proper labeling was affixed, they were able to start distributing them through Blick and other U.S. companies. I am by no means an expert in this area, but that was my understanding of what was relayed to me. I hope this helps! ❤

You have earned so much admiration and respect for everything you have done and the person you are, both art and non-art related. Lindsay, keep the great interviews coming our way! Harry's comments about the Holbein pencil alleged toxicity immediately brought to my mind to the warnings of many items (of any type0 in the US. Lindsay will likely relate to the multitude of products that have toxicity warnings for the residents of California. Apparently they're acceptable for the rest of the country. 😉

I feel that is important for me to give a heartfelt thank you to Harry and his family for his service in the armed forces and everything that that has entailed. I enjoyed this interview and have followed you both for a long time but I nearly gave up today, as I was bombarded with adverts every other minute. I'm not sure why and wondered if anyone else experienced this? Anyway, great chat, which resonated with me, and a big wave from Yorkshire 👋

Thanks for sharing! KZbin is so weird, it bombs talking to the camera videos with midrolls and puts none on tutorials. They used to let us controll the midroll placement. You can always check out the podcast Playlist, they don't put as many ads on the audio only version.

Giotto is a very popular and beloved brand (of mainly children's art materials) in Italy - it is not made by Lyra - its existence precedes FILA Group's acquisition of Lyra (which is originally a German brand) by some 100 years. And FILA was created as a pencil manufacturer also over 100 years ago in Italy. Every Italian grew up using Giotto (or "FILA Giotto", as I liked to call them as a kid) at some point! And since neither of you was sure - it's pronounced "Jotto" (it takes its name from the painter Giotto) ☺ I love that Harry loves their pencils!! I think sometimes even Italian artists overlook the Giotto Stilnovo and Di Natura ("by nature" - so, "Giotto, by nature" 😊) pencils because they think of Giotto more as just a children's brand. Those two are really nice pencils. I particularly love the duo Stilnovo pencils for my travel pencil case, because I get to take along twice the colours at half the space of other pencils!

PS - sorry for the overly long comment re this. I didn't know I was going to write this much (and it is not the first time either, haha). I am Italian, and I also grew up between Italy/France/Belgium so sometimes I can't help myself commenting on French/Italian/Belgian things (particularly when it's a beloved brand), hahaha. SORRY😆 I think I left the same comment on Harry's channel when he reviewed the pencils 😂. Love you both!!❤

@@thefrugalcrafter even more confusingly both FILA companies were originally Italian, and both were created around the same time! 😆 the art materials company though stands for "Fabbrica Italiana Lapis ed Affini " - which essentially means "Italian manufacturers of pencils & related products", though they use the more rare Latin-derived word "lapis" rather than the now more commonly used "matita", which really lets you know how old the company is, haha!

What a powerful story. Thank you for having Harry as your guest. I'm so glad to have discovered his KZbin channel recently. I didn't know his story. I learn so much from both of you. I'm new to pencil drawing-and that is how I found Art Gear Guide. . I will definitely be watching your future Art Chats going forward. ('m a vet too but never had any dangerous duty.)

That was a great interview. Very interesting to learn about Harry's "descend into colo(u)r pencil madness" 🙂If his book really comes out at the end of the year then I'll get it as a Christmas gift to myself. He puts so much work into his reviews, I especially admire his dedication to keeping his homepage updated. And it's so nice to hear the way he acknowledges his wife's help. Thank you so much for inviting him. And thank you to Harry for his uplifting words and generally showing that it's better to have a positive view on the world instead of wallowing in misery and being a grump - especially with your not-so-nice experiences. 🥰

thank you for all of your podcast interviews with other artists. This is such a great resource for artists, no matter their level! Wondering if you might consider interviewing the artist Sandi Hester (who is here on youtube as well as has a website with courses and more) Would love to see/hear the two of you in conversation!
