Art Lesson Online: How to make homemade rainbow scratch art. Perfect activity for home & at school

In this tutorial you will learn how to create rainbow scratch paper using paint and dish soap. This simple activity can be made with your young artists using materials readily available at home. They will love it!
This activity is great for encouraging experimentation in line, mark making and pattern and is a great way to encourage handwriting practice.
This activity is suitable for all ages and abilities, but i think it is particularly great for EYFS and Key Stage 1.

We used to make these when I was a kid using crayons underneath in whatever pattern of colors we wanted - just like you did. BUT, then we colored over the top with black crayon. We had to press pretty hard to get a thick enough layer for it to work, but it was a good stress reliever. Lol Anyway, after covering with the black crayon, we used toothpicks to carve out pictures. It was messy (black crayon shavings everywhere) but so satisfying! BTW, I've heard companies would use your method to create those scratch and reveal a prize items. You'd use a coin to scratch away a gold or silver surface to see what you won. I'm not sure if anyone ever uses those anymore, but they were always fun!

This is amazing!! Can I ask why the paint needs to be mixed with dish soap?

The soap helps the water based paint stick to the oil/wax based colour underneath, otherwise the underside would reject the paint on top and you would get lots of patches and streaks.

can u use watercolors for the paint and soap, and also is it okay if u use pencils instead of crayons?

Colour pencils should work, but I’m not 100% sure about watercolour. I suspect that it would not be thick enough to cover the underlying pencil layer. You could try making some paint with coffee granules, warm (not hot) water and soap..

Pencil crayon should work as it’s only the paint on top that gets scratched away.

You can use any kind of a paper really, but I used regular drawing cartridge paper.
