Really appreciate the bit of advice on squeezing out fresh colours, making your application process much smoother. It's truly refreshing to hear that ! How many times have I heard someone complaining about wasting paint because I wipe the palette clean at the end of the painting session, keeping only large untouched piles... I add to that changing brushes often, having good, straight hair on my brushes. Nothing like a brand new brush. I remember reading I think it was Ned or Ted Mueller saying: paint like your millionaire ! LOL

I love how simple you keep your palette. Unfortunately, I have bought too many extra colors because they are so pretty. I was trying to figure out how you do it, because whenever I add raw umber to darken it up, it imparts a brown/yellow that I didn't want. Lately, I have been adding a blue/green color to my flesh tones to make them darker. I really enjoy using Rembrandt, Old Holland, and M Graham paints. Don't forget that you're a genius !

I've also only ever used Windsor & Newton . My pallet consists of Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Burnt Umber, French Ultramarine, Alizarian Crimson . I use Liquin because I like how it helps the paint flow and also speeds up the drying time

As always an appropriately harmonious blend of sincerity and cynism underpinning the delivery of reliable information and invaluable experience. It's hard to take oneself seriously when the bloke with the strokes exudes such a destabilizing air of admirable self deprecation.

Great video! Thanks for the demo and the greatness of the paints. I love Winsor and Newton oil paint. All my oil paints are Winsor and Newton. They allow me to mix any color, any shade I want and I’m very happy with the results with my paintings. They are high quality and very affordable. I’m happy to hear all your paintings are made with Winsor and Newton oil paints. Blessings and take care.

Awesome video! I tend to use Gamblin for the more translucent colors like ivory black or raw umber; it's a touch less oily than the winsor and newton

I've noticed a light pink color on many of your pallets, especially the Bouguereau paintings. Can you tell me what color you're using? Thank you.

W&N took me from my student days right into my professional career back in the 80's, 90's. Rebuilding my palette of late and would love to see you compare W&N with the following, in order of preference so that I can compare with you: Vasari, M.Harding, Old Holland, Gamblin, Rublev, & Blue Ridge. Also, what is your opinion (safety concerns aside) on Vermillion? I fought skin tones until someone recommended this color and I have not looked back since.

Interesting. He's a wonderful artist. But he says he's using Winsor Newton Titanium White but then he holds up a tube of WN's student-grade Winton Titanium White. The rest of the colors he holds up are from WN Artists' Colour range. The Alizarin Crimson Permanent that he says he's holding up is actually ordinary Alizarin Crimson (PR 83) and he proves it by reading that it only has a "B" lightfastness rating. WN's Permanent Alizarin Crimson has an "A" rating, as does the recently introduced Ruby Madder Alizarin. He points out that he only uses a little AC in mixtures and not straight. The problem is the original Alizarin Crimson fades more in mixtures (because it's so dilute) than it does straight. Maybe he should switch to one of the more lightfast versions.

What u think of winton oil paints ? And what u think of their new titanium HUE series its titanium free so does that make them less lightfast or less of whatever?

Hi there. Are the oil paints you use part of the Winton or Artist's range of Windsor and Newton.

I notice i have raw umber (green shade) i like this, much less chroma from skin mixes. Do you use the red shade one? Also, yes winsor has loads of oil, which is great if no medium...but some other brands i have are basically solid paste whilst other brands are slop. Maybe it depends whether you use much medium?

If you want more opaque raw umber, i recommand gamblin's one. Same goes for ivory black. Gamblin's are more opaque paints but I find them hard to pick from the palette, like you have to come back 2-3 times before having the desired quantity

love the winsor and newton artist oils. You're looking at 18 to $28 for a 1.25 oz tube. Depending on the color some tubes are 9 bucks.

Hello Scott Love your videos funny but very informative so thank you . I’ve only ever used Windsor and Newton , Do you ever use the Windsor and Newton under painting white ? I like this as it dries really quickly especially good if you’re doing a grisialle under painting . Just wondered on your thoughts of this white. Regards Tim

You could try Lamp Black instead of Ivory Black (it's more opaque). Bright Red is a series 1 colour and although not as purple leaning as Alizarin Crimson Permanent is more opaque and lightfast. Might be useful :)

To me lamp is for straight opaque darkest black, ivory is for warm mixes retaining a bit of transparency...but i actually mix most black: aliz and phthalo green or sap green and dioxazine violet (for plants/landscapes) they just have zero yucky grey even if make grey but some are a bit hue shifted despite being darker than even lamp black. Somehow white plus black greys i really dislike

Sorry to be grumpy, but what paint are you talking about? I got to 3.10, zoomed back & forwards, checked the links... Do you mean:- W&N Winton Oil Paint- the more budget range (most common? Is this it?) W&N Artists quality Oil Paint- expensive (maybe this one as you are in the 'Artist' category?) W&N Griffin Alkyd Oil Paint (faster drying?) W&N Artisan (water mixable- probably not this one?) ;-)
