Man I used to absolutely love watching the demo modes of these games. I wasnt allowed to play games with martial arts in them when I was a kid cause my parents are religious fanatics and felt that martial arts had too much to do with eastern religions. It was so tantalizing seeing the demo mode and seeing how fun it looked, it really sucked knowing I would get in big trouble if I played games like this.

One of the games I played a lot on my phone during the turmoil of Hurricane Maria back in 2017. I even gave a comprehensive review of it in a G+. Loved the grimy late 70's setting (Even though Robert had an 80's Ferrari, lol), the attention to detail in the sprites, that OST and the things it established for the FG genre, like intro animations, camera zoom, meter management, taunts and the super move

That and I also think it was made as a partial parody to the Street Fighter series (which I don't see bad at all, because I actually enjoy it). Ryo and Robert have many similarities with Ryu and Ken. Even certain techniques (especially that flying uppercut they use in the KOFs) are basically ripoffs from some of them.

Mr. Karate would make a Great lead character for a Prequel to Art of Fighting; in my honest opinion; I think that Takuma Sakazaki was 'Mr. Karate' in the SNK Arcade game: "Street Smart" where he toured America while prize fighting along with his Pro Wrestler buddy....Too Bad Takuma/Mr. Karate is often overlooked as a character; Takuma's alter ego would also make a great Vigilante story

Played this today and finished it on easy. I don't know how people can have the patience to get good at it because it's so awkward and ridiculous. I swear to God, I did Ryo's uppercut move on Mickey and it connected but Mickey instantly recovered and uppercutted me before I could even recover from my own dang uppercut! My mouth was agape. Another difference between this game and SFII is that in SFII if one character is faster and they both throw a projectile the projectiles will collide, but in AoF you'll be hit from across the stage before you even finish your animation. I can only beat this game by being cheap as heck.

I'll admit that this is a fun game to watch... but not very fun to play. My main problem is the controls... they are really stiff, also makes it difficult to pull off special moves. Not huge on the fact that the characters also have spirit energy that can be drained by special moves either.
@theshooter20007 жыл бұрын
I think the spirit energy was really innovative. It was the perfect answer to players spamming projectiles and made the gameplay that much more complex. That's what I enjoyed about the SNK fighters, the gameplay was always more complex than meets the eye. It shuts out a certain fanbase, but really once you master the controls, the experience is much more satisfying than Capcom games. That's just my opinion though.

I like the art of fighting first time completing it today. But it wasn’t a fun game. I learned the moves and found they were more of a hindrance (apart from the fireball) and it was better to fly kick more then anything. I spent the better part of an hour trying to complete on easy because of the fuckary with the last boss. Good looking characters. Awesome stages but close to super street fighter 2 turbo unplayable. While done completing it though.

I am totally with you. The gameplay was and IS great! This was the most memorable arcade 1:1 fighting for me. Even after the release of the original Mortal Kombat, - Art of Fighting always felt like a tough guy's game, something that you'd have to DARE to play, if you understand me. Completely unlike the kiddy-oriented equivalents like Fatal Fury and World Heroes, - the fighting moves, the sound FX, music, voices and screams actually made you feel like it is you who is doing the fights. Here is a cool AOF myth, that was circulating around the arcades in my time: I could almost never defeat Mr.Big, and my friends claimed, most likely as a joke, - that there is a real connection between martial arts training and this game, saying that black belt in kyokushin karate is necessary to finish the game...of course it is nonsense, but in my teens back then i believed it! Not only that i wasn't the only sucker to buy into this rumor, but it was a hell of a motivation too :-)
@BPKDLH076 жыл бұрын
The gameplay was slow and feels really heavy, that's why this game is not good at all because of gameplay. Art of Fighting 2 is a bit better and 3 is by far, really by far much better. Art of Fighting is not a good game at all and not because is an old game, because I feel Street Fighter II more fluid than this one, was because of all the things that they want to have for the game: Special Moves by Energy Bar, Super Special Moves, Desesperations Moves when Life Bar is in low, see the damage of the fighters when they got hurt and yes, the details and innotations(Like Desesperation Moves) were really awesome but all of those were so much resources and can affect to the gameplay. About like or not like this game, even critics knows that "for tastes, colors", and personally I like it, but not because of that I'm not going to recognize their faults.
@xboys10p6 жыл бұрын
@BPKDLH07 i prefer Art of Fighting than Street Fighter II. SF II was easy when i was still very young (10y+), i ended sf Ii hardest level arcade in first tried but not Art of Fighting.hardest level arcade. I still needed to learn opponent movement again and again until i can defeated Art of Fighting hardest level game. Player vs Player, I still prefer Art of Fighting, more challenging with many character choice by players, but not SF II. Ppl always used Ryu, Ken, Guile, and sometimes Blank or Dhalsim. Next SF II edition, only M.Bison was favourite new char added by players on my country.
