Based on my readings, Gustave Courbet was a leading figure in the realist movement. Realism emerged in the mid-19th century as a reaction against the Romanticism and Neoclassicism that preceded it. Impressionism, on the other hand, began in the 1870s and 1880s as a reaction against the detailed realism of the time. So you are right, it's pre impressionist. :-)
