Transcription is an essential tool for any jazz improviser. Through the process of learning a solo aurally instead of by rote, you pick up the nuances that create the jazz feeling within the idiom of the language. In this video, I take you on a step by step process where you learn how to transcribe a solo to get the maximum benefits for your own playing.

Ye but how do you sing a solo with many fast notes as giant steps
@therealrussellsmyth
@therealrussellsmyth 2 жыл бұрын
@@Painx7 it can still be done, or atleast a close approximation. It’s never gonna be exact... it’s gonna sound kinda smeared/legato in spots due to the fast pace
@jackcarlsson5527
@jackcarlsson5527 Жыл бұрын
@@Painx7 the important part is not being able to sing it full speed but to really know the solo note for note and not remembering the solo by using for instance shapes or scales.

I knew a cat who would transcribe the rhythm of a solo first. Never tried it, but it always sounded like a good idea.

I dug your opening statements! No doubt there are different approaches to learning. Singing ir humming is vital as well as space in musical sentences. Listening for hours as well as observing long gone masters is what I did without transcribing much. Playing by feel and sound but knowing the correct notated versions of tunes is vital also. So much musical lines just seems natural thus the ability to copy a bit but deviate instinctively have served well enough. I've played on tour with some legends abroad. I always had day gigs non Jazz.Goodluck!

Thank you! For a jazz studies course I’m taking in school we’re going to have to transcribe a solo. I’m trying to start looking into how to now even though we haven’t been told exact details like length requirements and such. I just wasn’t sure how I’d break it done, but I think this will work well for me! Now I just need to find a solo or two that I want to transcribe, along with decide what instrument to play it on bass clarinet or tenor saxophone.

Update: I was bored so I decided to fool around and pick a random song off the top of my head to try transcribing for practice, couldn’t thing of one, then decided on Pazu’s fanfare. I know the song well enough already to sing, listened to the first part in a video. Took me a few minutes to get the first couple notes, once I found them the intervals between the notes just naturally came with it. I haven’t bothered writing any of it down but it was G C G D G E F G F E D E C and so on. That’s just the order of the notes, without any rhythm. It’s an easy enough song but I’ve been wanting to play it for a while and it sounds so good on tenor saxophone, especially since it was originally (at least in the show?) played on trumpet.

I basically only transcribe (I know this probably isn't advisable) and I think more than anything it makes you listen constantly. When I started playing the connection between improvisation and traditional exercises feels disjointed, I guess it would be if you tried to write a short paragraph by thinking of rules of English first rather than...just writing what you're actually thinking. One thing I'd say to anyone getting into this is getting used to the "stages" of transcribing. Particularly in harder solos, you will hit a point where you start to dislike the solo because you're constantly listening to it, often at slowed tempo!

Anyone who says transcription is a waste of time is going down the wrong road. How does anyone learn a language as a child? They listen, analyze, mimic, repeat and eventually put together words then sentences and ultimately simple communication. Over time you find your own voice and communicate your personal message.
