Firefighters and community members come together to save the artwork from a devastating fire at the Old Stock Exchange, a building dating back to the 17th Century in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It's astounding that there wasn't an effective fire suppression system with all of that fine art housed there. The center of that fire looked like it was burning very hot; I just wonder what was fueling it. Sad.

One Danish fire expert shared some very interesting thoughts.. From when the first fire alarm went off (07:36) to the tower collapsing (08:32) less than an hour had passed. By that time the entire roof structure (wood) was burning. Normally a fire doesn't spread or get hot THAT fast.. His theory (and so far it's only a theory!) is that there might have been a smouldering fire in a cavity. It had probably started already the evening before. Since it was enclosed there wouldn't have been enough smoke to detect. Then, in the morning, it burned through one "wall" and the entire cavity was suddenly filled with oxygen. If that's what happened, it would explain the explosion like spread and why it was so hot so quickly. ..... That being said, there are definitely issues in the Danish fire code. Especially for protecting historc buildings... For example, cavities under 200m3 (7060 cft) don't need their own fire detectors (this is according to the expert. I couldn't find the chapter in the fire safety guide). Which just seems idiotic!
