Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

Vivian why no art school? ur killing me girl. No jk but Vivian has improved so much and she really took that criticism well and activated a new part of her art work. The catfish in that one painting are so flowy and the pieces are more significant and have concrete emotions and movement. They have depth and meaning which for me is the whole point of an artwork.

seeing that she’s grown so much on her own, i honestly don’t think she needs art school. she probably is better off going to college for a more conventional degree for practical reasons and then pursuing her art independently, potentially becoming extremely successful in both but not having to rely entirely on one or the other, just my thoughts :)

That is so inspiring and impressive. She really listened and accomplished so much. I know of a lot of people in my class who just brush off critiques cause they think they are already up there. This person had such great technical skills in her oats portfolio and even though she was already amazing, she leveled up so much :) :) :)

I feel like there might have a bit of a misunderstanding with #15. (Very light palette-knife piece) It was treated as an abstract composition, where to me it felt more like it was descended from something impressionistic. That is a view over a lake, very hazy early morning. Feels like late fall, from the light and foreground colors. (At least, that's how I read it. This may say more about me than it does about the artist or the work)

I think the third face at 30:11 is a reflection of sorts of a person that invoked the dramatic feelings of our main subject matter

This is something i had struggled with; choosing images and subject matter that would look good and show my details but not thinking too much about the meaning even though i am capable. I am thinking more about the meaning of pieces i just worry that some of my pieces, although they have meaning, may be reviewed by colleges and seen as just painting from a picture (photos i have taken myself of subjects / scenes i have created). Some are sort of in the style that the realistic close up painting from the first review but you mentioned that this can be perceived as "picture copying". Should i make meaning more represented in the pieces or do you think it'll be ok?

Hi! I think it's great that you are thinking about this, I think recognizing the difference between copying and drawing is the first step in the right direction. It's hard for me to give you a concrete answer without seeing your portfolio. We have 2 courses that go through the brainstorming process from beginning to end that I think might help you. I disagree with some of the critiques. Too me the screaming girl painting is perfect so pls don't change anything. The same applies to the plastic bag piece: don't touch it. Well, it's all up to you what you want to do - so follow your gut feeling.

Hey art teacher, there is nothing wrong with the girl not being "nestled" into the bed. I don't think you noticed that the bed, like the girl, is naked. There's no fluffy top layer to be nestled in-to. That image is highly disturbing without trying to be shocking, which is something few artists can achieve, and which she did perfectly in that picture. Also...just going to say...I have a feeling that most people who send their work to you never learned composition in school. Its not something any of my art teachers from jr high to college talked about..ever.
