Hello! Love the video! Just a little note since I am a baker and it seemed fun to share! You seemed unsure of whether to call the technique you used to heat up the silk you were dying in your apartment a double boiler ot not. Just thought I'd chime in, it actually looks like a water bath! A double boiler is heating a pan or pot over a pot of boiling water, the purpose of which is to heat things gently. It is often used in chocolate work to avoid scorching the chocolate. A water bath is placing a container into a pot or pan of water to make sure it is heated evenly. It is often used for making custards, like cheesecake or pumpkin pie or creme brulee!

Thanks for the clarification! I knew the term double boiler but not the baking definition of water bath. Love having the correct terminology!

I am excited to see how your chunky art yarns look in your weaving! I have always been intrigued by those super coily yarns but never really understood how they could be used. Your silk scarf looks lovely too, can’t wait to see the finished product!

Love watching your fiber arts journey! What sort of drum carder do you have? I saw that you have a lout wheel, and I saw the Clemes & Clemes flicker brush you were using to blend the batt on the drum. Eventually I want to purchase a carder but it's a big investment!! Curious to hear how you chose the one you have.

I have the "Louet Standard Drum Carder"! I got it from Jill of Saori Santa Cruz who makes absolutely incredible, super textural art batts/yarns, so I trusted her recommendation and have absolutely LOVED it!

Always fun to see what you are up to. Can you explain how steaming gets the wax out of your projects? Many years ago in a high school art class, we tried batik -- no fancy pens, lol- and we ironed the fabric with layers of newspaper to absorb the wax.
@nicola.p
@nicola.p 2 ай бұрын
They were wrapped in an absorbant paper before it was put in the steamer. So the heat will melt the wax and it will then be absorbed by the paper it is wrapped in.

@@nicola.p thank you!! I saw them rolled up and should have realized that, pretty amazing process and much less work than what we did in the 70s
@AndreaAlexander
@AndreaAlexander 2 ай бұрын
Thank you @nicola.p for the answer!! Yes, the paper-roll method is how we steamed things in our class. At home I tried to do the same thing with a combination of newsprint and muslin over a stovetop steamer and it also worked well enough for absorbing the wax! I know a lot of people also do the ironing method and I haven't tried that yet, but probably will in the future because setting up a steaming system where water cannot touch the fabric at all is really challenging. It requires a lot of strategic stacking and layering. Thankfully we had that amazing vertical steamer to use on campus!

Which program is free n good for designing patterns ? No adobe or photoshop

A good free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP! I've been using it for years for basic editing. For drawing and painting digitally though, I prefer Procreate. (I know I'm not the one you're asking...still thought I would give my two cents.)
