I know this was filmed a year ago, but I want to thank you, Danny, for every single video you have made. You have made me an artist. You’re the one who inspired to buy my first sketchbook. You’re the one who kept me going when I was literally ripping said sketchbook into little pieces, muttering, “How did I think I could do this?” I appreciate you, and thank you for all you’ve done. And I hope you are remembering to get some rest.

Its Monday…my mind is swirling with all that needs to get started or finished for work…throw back the last few sips of coffee…check my email and the ‘…tube’….then….as if nothing else mattered … 54 minutes into the informative and highly entertaining discussion on art supplies..and the like. I will try to make the most of a productive afternoon for my clients. Thank you both a good ‘jump-start’ for the week. :-)

Always been sort of a "gear head" when it comes to hobbies. I've started painting and wanting to get into sketching and I've really enjoyed hearing your conversation about things you love and what matters and what doesn't - and especially your final notes of "use the one you have" - meaningful! Its easy to procrastinate trying something because I don't have the things. Encouraging!

As always, so grateful to eavesdrop on your wonderful conversations! Having mentors that are willing to share their knowledge will make all of us better artists (as long as we LISTEN to you!!!) The best advice is to use the tools, (even mustard!) You are both so inspiring, thank you!

Really appreciate the Faber Castell swatches. The Charvin paints are beautiful. Did you buy them in Paris or did you have them shipped to the US. If you had them shipped overseas, how long did the shipping take? Were there any shipping or product glitches?

It's funny, I'm a professional detailer, (retired but still working the warm weather) and I'm an amateur cartoonist /sketch artist. I find that I'm very guilty of stockpiling things I'll likely never use because it seems new and cool! With my sketching while I have tons of different options I find myself choosing smooth, paper a cheap .9 mm mechanical pencil. It's at much a cathartic experience feeling the smoothness of the pencil on paper as it is it's performance. While I can get a good range of shading and sketching with it I would call the sketches professionally finsihed as it were. It' smy fun grab and go tools to sketch away the blues and start my day! Thanks for your video you two~ Brent

This was really interesting, and thank you for listing the chapters bc there was some stuff I really didn't need to hear about. I especially like the section about water brushes. I've been wondering about those for a while. I'm headed to JetPens today to pick at least one up. I listen to these chats every week. You both are doing great keeping the conversation going with humor and insights along the way -- thank you!

Hearing your discussion on fountain pens pretty much summed up why I don't use them. I usually end up with more ink on me than the paper, or it clogs, etc. Which is also why I prefer good old quill/dip pens. I actually prefer to cut my own from discarded duck feathers, but I also have a well balanced brass one, 2 turned wood ones, and now a glass one. I really really like this glass one!

I am no artist, not even a newbie but i love art supplies. I envy those who can nonchalantly break open a new supply to use it right away. I still admire items i bought 6 years ago sealed in box, afraid to sully the niceness. For 2024 i wrote down “to use art supplies” to get motivated. i stick to limited palette after I bought a 120 gel pen set in the very start of my art supply obsession. I was overwhelmed by choices. And my coloring pages look chaotic from too many colors. Since then i stick to 6 to 12 colors (watercolor and color pencils/pens). It forces me to think about color composition and to do color blending.

I bought some fountain pens that came with ink converters and bought waterproof India Drawing Ink (liquidraw). I find my pens very unreliable, but not sure if it's the pens themselves, the fact they are ink converters and unsure if i need to plung the ink down every so often, or as you mentioned if it's the actual ink. Judging by your discussions my ink is the problem, is there a way around this now that my pens are saturated? What waterproof ink would you recommend? Thank you

I have a lot of art supplies as I tend to buy a medium in every possible colour, etc. However I keep going back to these basics: Palomino Blackwing pencils, Faber Castell watercolour pencils, Winsor & Newton watercolour pans & tubes and gouache tubes, Pentel brushes with a barrel you can fill with water and can take with you wherever you go. Less is more. Having too many supplies can promote artist's block, procrastination, etc. I have drawn my best drawings on cheap copier/printer paper.

This wasnʻt just about tools, it had advice and philosophy. At first I was wondering where to get the great stuff. Then I realized two things 1) I have tons of great stuff - so much stuff that I have been tossing things that no longer function; and 2) that I very likely donʻt need more stuff - I need to use the stuff I have more. Thatʻs the way to get better, isnʻt it. I will be thinking about the advice and hints so I use my tools in different and more effective ways. Thank you.

This was a really great podcast (as have been the others)...really interesting. I'd like to hear a little about how and when JML started drawing. Did I understand correctly that Danny and Jack have never actually met?😲 I love the sound of Jack's sketchbook😍😍😍 Oh I remember those black books (did they have a red binding?) in the UK. Yeah, those weird arty types used to have them...together with rotring pens.😉

When I started learning how to paint I went a bit crazy and got all kinds of art supplies I could find, I wanted to try everything. Because of this, I very rarely buy art supplies nowadays and I like to rediscover some supplies by mixing them together with no rules, like Danny said.

I’m coming to the end of this episode on my art journey. I love geeking out about watercolour pigments, but I had to force myself to limit my palette down to 13 colours so that I can actually learn to use them properly 😅. Now, every time I feel like scratching that buying itch I go and see what else can I make with whatever I already have :)

Listening to this as the Amazon delivery guy rings ... I was figure drawing on Sunday and my favorite mechanical pencil (an inexpensive Pentel) had a shattered barrel. A 2-pack of replacements are now in my possession. I can't tell you why this pencil is my favorite (I don't even love mechanical pencils per se) but it just works.
@alejandromorales95163 жыл бұрын
My other core supplies: a small tin watercolor palette stuffed with half pans of dried tube paint, a Pentel waterbrush, a couple travel brushes, rags, a kneaded eraser (prefer Faber Castell because those come in a plastic case) and a collapsible cup ... and of course a sketchbook (I keep several going at a time ... some are for drawing and some are for watercolor ... I like rotating through them at random).

I love to write and draw with vintage fountain pens with flexible nibs. My favorite modern pen for drawing is the Namiki/Pilot Falcon. The nib is semi-flex but very responsive and can produce considerable line variation. There are many good Japanese pens! I also favor Pitt drawing pens which are waterproof India ink.

Am I the only one? I have tried the usual sketchbooks but I prefer just loose A4 sheets which I protect in clear punched pockets and file. I like this system because it doesn't clutter my sketchbook file with rubbish work, which I discard, and the good work is protected from smudging, etc. I can also take out a page of drawings, etc. move to different files, etc. as it's not stuck in a book.

Aw, snap! I have four pages of notes in my college-ruled notebook and then, at the end... What do you say? Only kidding. I'm taking away the items you each mentioned that I have not tried yet as well as tips on how to use certain things like the Sumi ink blocks. So maybe, more on how to use specific products beyond the basic way one would use them? And, the names of the old drawing books? I probably have one or two but just curious. Thanks. This was fun. --KateColors
