When I bought a drawing table, I bought one with a glass top. You can shine a light underneath and have a big tracing table. I prefer the water brushes in which I keep only enough water to keep the base of the brush wet. For some reason, they are the exact combination of soft and stiff that is perfect for gouache.

Amy, thank you for yet another delightful episode on your wonderful channel! I honestly concur with most of your choices and thoughts, it's so much fun seeing such a dedicated artist share, share, and then share some more! You might like to try some of the Russian and Japanese HIGH-quality watercolor paints. I like your choice in brushes. The Princeton brushes are true "workhorses" but some German brushes and the Australian "Neef" brushes are very very good! But as I always do at the beginning of the year. Taking a dollar shop art set I'll BLOW their minds with a painting and then "reveal" that it's the ARTIST, not the tools that do the work. God bless Amy!

These types of videos are definitely helpful when trying to figure out what supplies to get. I've been lucky enough to own a good variety and have found some fun supplies I really like. One I'm well versed in is just regular graphite pencils with different grades. I tend to use Generals graphite pencils. For colored pencil, I like the Prismacolor Premiers. I'd like some nicer sets eventually, but my Prismacolors have been working well for me since I got them when I was a teenager. I'm also liking the Col-Erase as well. For watercolor I've been liking Daniel Smith, but I started with Van Gogh watercolors and those are pretty decent on a budget. I tend to do my graphite drawings on smooth Bristol and like you, I've been really enjoying the Art Creations sketchbooks. I have a lot more supplies that I haven't had as much experience with, but I'm so excited for the possibilities. And to anyone new to art reading this, don't be intimidated by buying the most expensive supplies out there. You can literally make beautiful work with even something as simple as a ball point pen. So there's no shame in starting small and buying nicer supplies as you go. I've created award-winning artwork just from basic pencils and such.

This was a very informative video. Thank you! I had to return something to Jerry’s Artorama and the process was a nightmare. $170 I had accidentally ordered oil paint instead of acrylic. I had to return the product to them then wait over 60 days for the refund. All done on paper & snail mail with NO receipt online. After months of looking for credit on my credit card statement I gave up. I only order from Blick now. They have great customer service.

Agreed - I spent a lot of time and money trying a lot of different brands - MGraham Mission Holbein Windsor Newton etc. I love to paint abstract and scry whatever comes through and DS paints play with water and each other so beautifully. @winterwoodsstudio also thank you for explaining the clear acrylic paint part. Super good info. Walmart had a base clear acrylic pouring paint that I've been using to try to make paint with a ton of mica powder that I've collected. I can make all the different types of paint perfectly, but acrylic. This acrylic pouring paint seems to have an adhesion problem. I didn't even know the paint was a thing. Then you talked about adhesion issues, and I'm like, wow, I've seen that! I wish I could afford the website you suggest to learn from. I went to school for the wrong art. I went got music, classically trained. Sadly, it got me nowhere, and I am stuck in a creative mind without the knowledge and tools.

I'm in a state of mind, right now, where I am trying to refine my skills. There is nothing to be sold yet. So I'm not worried about color fast. I just need as much paint as I can get. To create and take a pic of it and store it. Maybe make a killer art journal with it all at the end.

White Nights are the best value for money and they’ve been around for several centuries as opposed to several decades. They have stood the test of time….. Give them a try😊
@winterwoodsstudioАй бұрын
So White Nights, where I live, are only available on Amazon and only as a set. No open stock. So, If I run out of a color, I'd have to buy a whole new set, which makes me inclined not to buy them. I've heard them mentioned on and off before, but unless I can get open stock somewhere, I probably won't buy them. And no, Jacksons doesn't ship to me. I know they are sold there open stock. I placed one order with them once and I couldn't order from the website, I had to talk to a customer service rep physically on the phone, give her each individual item I wanted verbally while she put it in a cart. It kind of sucked. I probably won't ever do it again. But you never know! Maybe I'll find open stock somewhere someday and try them!

Dessert (I prefer dessert island to desert island hahaha) island supplies would definitely be my watercolors. Another must have is a Sigma Micron or two, and a Blackwing pencil and sharpener. I would have to have a big old sketchbook as well. The last sketchbook I made I used Arches cold press and it was my absolute favorite sketchbook ever! I completed it in a mere 6 weeks. I used an entire pad of Arches to make it, and I interspersed some toned paper here and there. I want to make another one, but I need to get through some of my other sketchbooks as well. Like many of us, I have several going on. Yep, I am a sketchbook floozie, just like Lindsey the Frugal Crafter claims to be...lol Oh, I would love to hear about what you suggested in the video. Unfortuantely right now I am tired beyond believe after spending 3 days getting ready for my family's T-Day, which was today and hosted by yours truly every year, and every holiday. That is a long way of saying I've aleady forgotten your suggestion. Not because it wasn't worth pursuing, but that right this moment, both and brain have shut down leaving me with a mega case of CRS. 🤣I'll watch again after I have some sleep. Have a great night, Amy!

I'd love to see a video on finding your artistic style and/or voice. It's one of my favourite topics to explore as both an artist and an artist educator. My favourite supplies are similar with a lot of yours; daniel smith watercolour, I use talens as a sketchbook, I tend to jump between brands for watercolour paper, but enjoy the hot press. This year I've leaned into some water based makers and really enjoy my tombow's. My fav liner has been the Tombow Fudenosuke pen. I'm more of a textile artist, so wools and fabrics are where I get picky. Dupioni silk and linen for fabrics, merino and corriedale for wools. Love your videos, thank you!

Watercolor or gouache? Love both so I guess my fav is whichever one I am using .
@AnonymoiАй бұрын
I am so glad you mentioned that gouache is not just opaque watercolor! It drives me crazy when people say that, especially when they hold themselves out as authorities and double-down on the statement when questioned. As you say it can be used that way, and there are some people especially in the age of social media art who use it solely that way, and it’s an easy way to describe it to someone who has never used it, but that isn’t really what it is. Re: Holbein gouache - I love the colors and pigment load but it is interesting that you pointed out that it doesn’t reactivate as easily as some gouache when subsequent layers are added. This is a good thing, but I have noticed that doesn't work as a “dry gouache” as well as the other brands I have dried, so if anyone has plans to use it that way that is something to consider. Most colors crack more easily when dried into pans than is the case with the other brands I’ve tried. Some colors have issues with rewetting - the worst offender I have tried is Geranium, a beautiful vivid magenta color which which was fine for a couple weeks after being dried, but by 6 months had basically turned into a rock. All I could get from it was some pale pink water. I added water and let it sit overnight and there was virtually no change. Very odd.

@winterwoodsstudioАй бұрын
I agree with you on all of those! It’s a shame about the sketch caps on the chisel end! I was building my collection and then stopped because Copic claimed it was fixed, sent me replacements for the ones I had just bought that were split, and two of the replacements that they sent me direct from their company came spilt, without me ever even having used them. I've been using Ohuhu for now, although they don't do muted colors as well... Sigh. It's really disappointing! I have a video up here somewhere about it. I think it says "Copic Disaster" on either the title or the thumbnail Anyway, thanks for watching!

It really is the best, isn't it? So glad you agree! I've bought five other brands this year alone, experimenting to try to find something comparable, and I just can't! There's nothing else like it, and I have tried all the other expensive brands too. I feel like sometimes viewers are disappointed in me because I can't say I found something comparable, but I have to be honest too! Plus, I'm kind of tired wasting money on brands I don't like as much! Lol! Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!

Hi, Amy, so sorry, but I am disagreeing with you on so many things (just details, of course). Blick is far from being a "small, family-owned" company. It is basically a country-wide chain store 60 stores), and has replaced the old, funky art stores we used to have in New York, such as Pearl Paint and New York Central. They also bought out Utrecht. There is a 15-store group called Artist and Craftsman that is employee-owned. Wow! They have a couple of stores in Brooklyn, and most of the rest are also on the East Coast, a few on the West Coast, and one on the Third Coast (Chicago). And an aside on brushes: my favorite is also a Princeton line, the 4050's, now called Heritage. I didn't like the Aqua Elite at all - it dumped water, and I took it back (to Blick) to get my money back. Also took back a Silver Black Velvet that looked like rats had chewed on it. (Not accusing you, Ms. Ferrita.) Will do a separate comment on the care and feeding of a Himi gouache palette. Mine will go three months if unopened. S.

I haven't. I've heard there can be drying issues with them if you live in a very humid place and I do. But that's just stuff I heard, I have no facts to back it up. Too many ads? Is that what you said? I don't put the ads in, youtube does. I only say either yes, monetize it( which means ads are allowed) or no, don't, and then youtube places the ads on their end. They decide when, where, and how many. And then, to make it even more complicated, not everyone sees the same number of ads, or the same ads, or even at the same time in the video. The youtube algorithm does that all. And on top of thatt, before my channel was even monetized (which means I wasn't allowed to earn any money from it) youtube was putting ads in my videos and keeping ALL the money and i had no control over it whatsoever. . So... it is what it is I guess? But the ads are also how I make a little money so I'm not going to complain I guess! Thanks for watching!
