Oil dries slow and true to color and value, so you can blend forever without having to add more layers. Is looks the same dry as wet. Acryllic brush strokes can have ‘hard edges’, wich can make the painting feel more ‘cartoony’, or just less realistic. When you add layers in acryllic, you have to take extra care to hide the edge of the layer, if you go for a blended/ realistic painting! You can work a large painting and come back to an area you left earlier. So: oil is probably really nice if you do large, classical paintings, realistic landscapes and portraits

Prismacolor are as far as I know, are wax based so good for layering techniques and polychromos are oil based, much better for getting a sharp point for detail 😊

Prismacolor are wax based, very soft and therefore easy to blend. Disadvantage: wax bloom, unless sealed with a proper varnish. Polychromos are oil based and hard by comparison, will hold a sharp point longer, layer better. No bloom / no varnishing necessary. Polychromos are really too hard to rub off enough pigment over the plasticky slickness of acrylics. A fix is to underpaint acrylics and then add Liquitex Clear Gesso for tooth, then the Polychromos. Polychromos is also difficult to add over oil pastels, they scrape more than anything. Prismacolor works better on both.

@@SyndiaArt You're welcome. Bonus tip: A black eyebrow pencil is super soft, yet can be sharpened to a point to add dark detail over oil pastel. Cheaper than Polychromos and Prismacolor both. 😜

When I look at art magazines showing paintings that have won awards (ex the Artist’s Magazine), I see lots of really great work, different styles, subjects, all extremely well done. But about 75-80 percent are oil on canvas. I once read that in viewers’ eyes, oil is associated with “best” even though an oil painting might not actually be as well done or interesting as an acrylic or watercolor painting. I once saw a colored pencil portrait at an exhibit that was so beautifully done, it looked like an oil painting but A mediocre oil landscape hanging next to it had won a ribbon, not the portrait. Great art haul blog!

The green you have is nice. The dark brown really drew my eye up to the horizon area of the painting and made that a strong focus. The lake was a calming color but kept my eye there at the lake with only glances up to the horizon. I suppose it's what you want the focus to be. It's been very helpful to watch your progress and hear your thinking as you go. Thanks for sharing!

Re:oil paint IMO. With the quality of acrylic paints now it truly becomes a personal choice. So much of the feeling about oil paint is historical, belief and behavior. Artists who feel strongly about conventional art history and training as a foundation for their work (think MFA/ academic background) have very high opinions of oil. But there is a larger community of artists /creatives finding their foundation in their own creativity. (My heart is pulled more by Pollock, or Rivera/Orozco but I am also in awe of Hudson River /Church /Bierstadt.) The bottom line is: how do you feel when working with the medium? Architect Louis Kahn looked at a material and asked "what do you want, brick?" What does the oil, or acrylic or any other form "tell" you it wants to be...and is that what you are looking to create. Hope that made sense. I've been working with these questions lately.

I truly loved reading your thoughts on this. Very insightful and I completely agree. "what do you want, brick?" That is so in line with me. Why do I even try to compare oil paints to acrylic, it's just silly. Thanks for the great "food for thought" moment. Have a lovely weekend ahead ♥

Yes! Oil painting rags CAN spontaneously combust. The residue of oil paint, thinners, etc can catch on fire! When rags begin to dry, they produce heat, which when combined with oxygen turn into combustible cloths! I've never painted with oils, but back in the day, a had a friend who did have that horrible experience!

Hi Syndia! Fellow artist, longtime subscriber, first time commenter. First, you should know that yes, oil rags can and do spontaneously combust. All you need to do is reuse a glass jar w/a metal lid. Keep your used rags in there with some water. :0) Second, you are my fave artist and KZbin vlogger. Seriously. Thank you for sharing your process. Here's mine...I like oils because when acrylics dry, I can really see the polymer binder. It's shiny and looks plastic-like to me - especially with impasto work. If you really don't want to work with OMS, there are other options. Oil is one of them. Either way grab yourself a metal container meant for oil paint brush cleaning. They have secure lids. I use OMS and only take the lid off my metal jar when I need to. That being said, I think that oils and acrylics are different, just like watercolor and gouache are different. Each has properties that are great in their own right. Try not to think it's one or the other. Try exploring oils like the different medium that they are and embrace what they can do! Look at the beauty you created when experimenting with ink! Btw, HUGE fan of the watercolor visual journals. Been using them for years. Have fun with your new goodies, Syndia, and thank you SO much for sharing your process!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comment, thank you! ♥ It means a lot. I had never thought of thinking of oil for its own merit/beauty without trying to compare it. Yours is the best advice I ever received about oil paints and I will take it to heart. Why even compare it. You are so right! Wishing you the best weekend ahead. Sending you loads of inspiration :o) (P.S. I loved your first line, it made me smile... It reminded me of The Bob & Tom Show)

oils is much better than acrylics though especially when you want to do portraiture. Trust me, I tried with acrylics and I failed lol. imo for complex subject matters oils triumph over acrylics. I think you'll notice the difference if you get artists oils paints, don't get me wrong winton isn't bad but its student grade. I also want to mention you don't need to clean your brushes with linseed oil you can clean it with soap and water ( or murphy oil wood cleaner it works) . I personally don't use solvents ( sometimes a little bit of spike oil from natural pigments) I'd recommend to check out natural pigments website they sell products that are not as toxic maybe you can use a solvent free gel ( it's not liquid) or oleogel instead of the regular linseed oil if you are afraid it can create combustion.

Hi! If you decide to try oil paints again, please look into the water soluble oil paints (less toxic). And yes, a bunch of oily rags can start a fire. I love that you got the Lenox paper because.... Lennox! I also really like seeing you re-work a piece that you weren't satisfied with. That was very helpful as a technique. Helps to not be so frustrated when a piece doesn't hit expectations (turns it into a beginning). And...I absolutely loved your collage pieces. Good video - love these cozy art vlogs.

Remember me? I'm the one you keeps commenting while watching the video cause if I wait till the end I forget what I wanted to say... That said, this is my second comment 😅 I recently bought some charcoal cause I wanna learn the medium and I do lots of portraits. Portraits and still life's are my favorite things to draw/paint. Soooooo, if you can share footage (maybe tutorials) on those portraits you plan to do on charcoal... OMG THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Several people already said this, but I thought I'd chime in since I work primarily with colored pencils and pastels. Prismacolors have more wax in the binder and Polys have more oil. Prismas are creamy and blend nicely and Polys are good for detail and hold a sharp point. But...the secret is the combination of paper and pencil brand you choose to use and how you choose to blend them. It will make a difference in the results. Also, I'd love to see collage!!

Syndia, I paint a lot in oils..my teacher taught us this way so he only paints in oils so he gave us a lot feedback(I am a beginner). First do not threat oils like acrylics...since the drying time is there for you to think and explore. Don't be shy to use a lot of oil paint on your canvas..actually I use a lot more and I notice it gets super shinny when is completely dry. Also do not think your oil paints too much like you would do in acrylics. Try and blend your oil paints first to each other without thinning them out. You can also do an acrylic background then add your oils on top to finish your painting. I use the Galdyk solvent(to dry fast) it is made by Gamblin and they make oil paints that are very good. I hope this helps!

I stopped working with oils for the same reasons. The fumes from the solvent were unbearable. I work at a apartment, and even with open windows and a fan in the room, I was still breathing the fumes. And the paint gets EVERYWHERE by accident... Oil paints are great, but these problems are too much for me, so I stick with acrylics haha

prismas are wax based, polys are oil. the poly leads are harder than the prismas, less likily to break. prsimas come in a lot of colours, polys have less colours but all the colours you would need. the main thing to remember with coloured pencils is that they look better when they are layered with other colours

The benefits of oil paints are their slower drying time that allows you to work slowly, mix and layer to your hearts content, and easily fix mistakes, BUT the toxicity of it, made possible the creation of acrylics, that allows the artists to thin it with water to create watercolor effects or using several agents to slow their drying process and their consistency, so you can achieve an oil painting look. At the end is personal preference and safety issues. I wouldn't feel safe using oils. I stick to acrylics 100%! So, I can't sell you on oils! 😅

Your acrylic seascape looks bolder than your oil seascape. To me it's like I could see how much more confident the artist was painting in acrylic than oil. The oil one seems timid in comparison. In terms of spontaneous combustion, I heard it could happen if the rags are exposed to high heat for example if you put them in the dryer. I am afraid of oils too but I would love to see you trying them several more times before you decide against them again.

The Prismacolors are wax and the Polychromos are oil. Oil pencils are harder, best for layering, while the wax are best at blending. I have them both, but I don't really care that much for oil pencils... I mean those are good, but the Prismas are more vibrant, easier to work with, and WAY CHEAPER! Oh, all colored pencils are a mix or both wax and oil, but depending on which percentage they lean towards to, they are classified as either wax or oil. 😉 Pd. The Prismacolors, since they are so soft, need sharpening more frequently, which means to go through them quickly, also they are prone to breakage, so don't let them fall, cause the lead will brake. The polychromos, on the other hand, hold their point very well and are quite sturdy. Perfect for details. And you can usen them together, the Prismacolors along with the Polychromos, so you can take advantage of their individual properties! 😃 That's why, even though I prefer my Prismacolors, and don't let go of the Polychromos cause they are useful!!!

never tried oils becase I do not have a studio, only a small ouse where we live so it would be very hard to do oils with all that smell, chemicals, solvents etc. I also did not see the difference between the acrylic and the oil painting but I guess you can achieve some results with oils that you cannot with any other mediums... but I really do not know:)
