I'm an artist and trained designer and though I agree with you for the most part. Most of the famous artist we know of were commision by the wealthy of their time. Renaissance masters the church, John Singer Sargeant, Norman Rockwell, Bob Peaks, snd Frazetta as examples of visual Artist. We have more access to art because of capitalism, be it in the form of music, architecture, books, films, toys, cars, furniture, cards and decorations etc. So though most of the art that I will produce through out my lifetime will be for myself as someone who sells art/design products and services I can't discount the importance of capitalism to art.

I don't necessarily love calling the modern state of economic dystopia "capitalism" but the point nonetheless stands and is a great point

Coming from someone who was an artist trying to live off commissions and genuinely hated how diminishing and miserable it was

This is the natural evolution of capitalism.

Art needs money to be produces because artists need to eat. In a capitalist system anyone with money decides what and how a piece of art gets made, in a less liberal system where grants are given on individual basis then it would be the gov, unless there's something like UBI where survival doesn't depend on your job.

On an adjacent if not entirely related topic, I’d love to hear your thoughts on postmodern art. In the sense that there are those who still think postmodern is new and cool and edgy, whereas really it’s been around for a long time and has more than run its course and run out of things to say. It’s a cul-de-sac. I don’t know. It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately, so I have a bias toward the subject, but I imagine you’d have insightful things to say about it.

I dont think the issue is so much making art for the sake of making money that is the issue as much as letting people whos job it is to focus on money, make artistic decisions is the issue. should some people go nude for the sake of nudity, sure; should some people be strippers, sure - but how do we keep both?
