Such costumes are typical for the Bulgarian "kukeri". Perhaps there is a direct reference? :)

I know the costumes you speak of and of course he would know them too...also there is such an incredible array of dance costumes in Africa that evoke a similar feeling. Yet his work is truly unique. When you see it up close it has a life force that is very special (as I'm sure all the other costumes do too!)
