Part II in a series on mental health and suicide intervention in the transportation construction industry.
In this episode we talk to Zachry Construction Corporation about how and why they decided to investment in mental health support for their employees and what the impact has been.
Recognizing they wanted to help, but not knowing how, they partnered with a nonprofit to provide training and establish an internal employee assistance program. The company also made mental health part of their mandatory safety training and offered all employees and their families mental health benefits.
The results were a substantial increase in the number of people seeking help. As company leader David Zachry explained, creating a culture where you can ask someone, 'how are you doing?, or 'how are you feeling today?' has implications on retention and on safety.
Their only regret? Not doing it sooner.
