Dry Cleaning - Route du Rock 2023 - ARTE Concert

Après un debut album couronné de succès, ‪@drycleaningband‬ remet le couvert avec un deuxième album baptisé Stumpwork. Présentations à la Route du Rock.
Voix désabusée sur instruments orageux, voici la marque de fabrique de Dry Cleaning. Le groupe, qui a vu le jour à Londres en 2018, juxtapose en effet avec une grande élégance spoken words et sons typiquement post-punk. Le tout est British à souhait, et peut faire penser à une version plus apaisée des Sleaford Mods. La bande n’en oublie pas pour autant le caractère contestataire propre au post-punk anglais, et épingle dans ses textes tout ce qui ne va pas dans la société britannique et dans le monde.
Lorsqu’ils se présentent devant les festivaliers de la Route du Rock 2023, les membres de Dry Cleaning ont deux albums à leur actif : New Long Leg et Stumpwork. L’ensemble donne corps à une discographie particulièrement ambitieuse où l’exigence artistique côtoie bien souvent l’humour, à l’image de la pochette de Stumpwork ou au clip de « Scratchcard Lanyard ». Florence Shaw et ses acolytes tirent ainsi largement leur épingle du jeu au sein de l’impressionnante vague post-punk qui submerge actuellement le Royaume-Uni.

Goth-flavored jazz fusiony neo-postpunk fronted by Anne Hathaway in "Alice in Wonderland" cosplaying as Morticia Addams and performing excerpts from "Einstein on the Beach." The video production quality is superb, and the band can really play. Very enjoyable.

Some people underrate what Florence does in this band but she holds everything together. Watching her here she's such a cool front person and then she puts the shades on and from then onwards this was Florence Shaw and The Dry Cleaning Band this was her show 🕶🤣

I'm always impressed with the mix their sound-person gets for them. Getting her vocal constantly audible must be tricky. No screens around the drums either and several live amps onstage. Good work whomever mixed this. I would love to see the signal chain for her vocal. Anyone got any details for me?

Good observation. In the past, I would have assumed they just re-recorded the vox in post-production (which is/was more common than LOTS of folks want to admit), but that's not needed as much nowadays with vocal isolation software that let's you enhance and bump up vocal levels without getting bleed from other instruments. I'm curious how this video audio compares to the actual sound the audience heard.

the noise gates on mixing board can get pretty wicked. theres some really powerful proximity gates and with key tuning and the right eq, you can rlly get stuff bumping vocal wise

I've never heard Dry Cleaning before. They're OK. But what really makes them is Florence Shaw, she seems to be a true don't give a fuckist. Along the lines of M.E Smith and the like in her delivery.... Rock on Florence (She's excellent when she features vwith the Sleaford Mods, 'Force Ten From Navarone'...), great voice. Great presencce. Kind of like Nico in the Velvet Underground.

One Hour Martinizing, if you can find it (the vinyl version was aluminum and the CD version vinyl, which tended to melt in yer player like chocolate fudge, the music getting sludgier and sludgier even as she sounded more and like Lili Von Shtupp---then I figured out I was shoving 45s in there, and not even of this band! Wow, I still taste that toad today!)---uh, yeah, if ya can find it, Florence reads/sings Joyce's Finnegans Wake in its entirety entirely in Gaelic, sounding much like she did in her original band, Na Kunts Keltic (The Celtic Sunts, as they were known Stateside). Florence is that rarefied girlfriend every man dreams of, the kind you don't take home to mother ('cause dad'll run away with her), and who you'll eventually stab to death after that millionth "What? What didja say?" Still, for those decades ya can stand her she'll never fail to arouse that erotic ennui that sends you into a spiral of delirium. I dream of sliding into a coffin with her and Su Tissue for a delirious ménage à troisdephonic!
