One thing I have learned through my travels and through language learning is that nowhere is remote. Wherever we are, whatever language we speak, that is the centre. We can learn languages and offer our language to others. Artem is a good example.

Забавный момент. Артем говорит "контент", тогда как Стив говорит "содержание", имея в виду одно и тоже. То есть каждый использует слово из родного языка собеседника.

Geetings from Novosibirsk! :) For those who don't know - it'a big city, the third most populous in Russia, often called "the capital of Siberia".We have almost no tourist attractions here partly because the city is only 127 years old. But it's an educational and scientific centre of Siberia. And the countryside is wonderful. I found Artem's videos on KZbin some years ago. He's doing a great job. Artem, you can do even more and better! I think you've got great potential ;) . And it' always nice to hear how Steve speaks Russian. I don't notice mistakes really..I believe It's already great to be able to understand a difficult language and keep the conversation going. All the best!

Steve, thank you for your videos and for what you are doing concerning multilingual learning. It's really grateful! I'm from Russia, 54 years old and I learn 4 languages (English, German, Spanish and Japanese). And I have a dream to learn Thai cuz I travel to Thailand sometimes and I have friends there. As I understand you haven't learned Thai. Why? I find Thailand very attractive and fascinating with friendly people and interesting culture. Moreover, this country is one of the most favorite places for tourists and it's developing fast. I tried to learn Thai by myself but it was so difficult with tones. Maybe you can give advice on how to learn tonal languages. Thank you a lot!

Steve, glad to see you're doing more Russian content. I have a quick question, at which stage would you consider it appropriate to start learning via Netflix/other media once you have enough words with an inflected language like Russian? I know about 13,000 Russian words on LingQ but still can't understand more than half of anything in videos or shows, and thus the process seems unhelpful to me currently. Thanks.

@@Thelinguist I should also notice that you can't just say "Артём полиглот", there has to be a verb. In this case, when in spoken language we don't actually put a verb there, in place of "это" you should put a dash. So, "Артём - полиглот." would be correct.

You said learning many words is a must for "meaningful conversations". Depends on the situation and what counts as one. Difficult to have such a conversations if natives get bored, which is sure to happen if you have few interests only a few others share. Eventually we must speak but if you can't get acquainted with even a few natives, you're wasting your time

@Language and Programming Channel I assume your are also from a slavic contry. That's why it is comes so easily. Most of the words/expressions are very similar and so is grammar. After figuring out some minor differences and getting a bit of input everything just clicks. I am polish and it took me about 3-4 months to be able to understand russian. I am also in the same boat in korean as you are with french. 3 months in and i struggle hard. Hardly any similar words completly different grammar, alphabet and culture. 3 months of learning and i feel like i am getting to the same spot as in the first day of learning russian.

Niin ne kirjoitetaan noin Jarppi. Venäjän kirjoitus ja lausunta on erilainen. Itsekin välillä luen ne niinkuin ne kirjoitetaan, koska esim. serbian kielessä lausutaan niinkuin kirjoitetaan eli vähän niinkuin suomeksikin niin mullakin tulee unohdettua että hei toi "o" lausutaankin "a" kirjaimena venäjäksi.

Freedom of speech. Of course maintaining languages is harder the more you learn. You claim to know 20 but can you say that in good conscience when it's likely some are so rusty, there's not much you can say when unexpectedly meeting a Greek or Romanian native for instance? Easily explains why we haven't heard some of these languages lately
