My main issue with Artemis was that all of the emotional stakes were completely tied up in the world building. Where in the Martian everyone can relate to a rescue mission, the story here was just a little too complicated. Apparently they're going to be making a movie and I'm curious to see how it works. There's no getting away from the different gravity this time...

At this point in time, after the pandemic and the Hollywood crisis of the past few years, I'm not sure if this movie will really come out or when it will come out. But if it does, the movie can solve your issue by visually, culturally, and environmentally fleshing out the moon base. Because I think that is where movies excel compared to the static media that is books. Andy Weir already set a quite lot of exotic and dynamic cultural features to the moon world(different currency, entertainment vacation place for the eccentric people, a city built by immigrants that form semi-closed guilds and so on) that are distinguishable from any other place Earth, with the proper effort put in, I think movie can totally flesh out the stake of saving this unique city and its population who call it a home.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on Project Hail Mary. I enjoyed it much more than Artemis. The first half felt much like The Martian, but the second half added an entirely different dynamic.

This is interesting, I wasn't really planning on reading Artemis but it is good to have listened to this review. Great video!

I couldn't disagree with you more on the character development stuff. I think jazz actually lacked any sort of arc at all, she started as a lazy super genius and ended as a lazy super genius. Actually I'm kind of surprised you liked her character at all considering a lot of the things you've said you don't like about Kvothe are front and centre with jazz. (she can just invent deus ex machina that let her use her phone remotely overnight, all the boys love her, powerful authority figures give her a free ride for no reason at all.) That said I enjoyed your review as always.

I listened to this as an audio book over and over when it first came out (probably not the best since I was 10 at the time), and absolutely loved it. I didn't like it quite as much as The Martian, but I liked it more than Project Hail Mary.

You didn’t feel like Jazz was....well, less a 26 year-old woman and more a 13 year-old boy in terms of maturity/humor/overall development? I found Jazz to be less a strong protagonist and more disappointing.

Jazz is literally Mark Watney if Mark Watney lived in poverty & had a checkered past. There is some genuine character depth, even more than in the Martian. I love the literary tool of using her messages with Kelvin in place of flashbacks to develop her backstory. Just because she has character flaws & vulgarity doesn’t mean she’s a middle school boy

I read "Artemis" when it came out and read "Project Hail Mary" last year. I will say that I felt at the time that "Artemis" was less good than "The Martian", but still quite enjoyable (and I agree, Rosario Dawson really elevated the book), and it showed some range for Andy to challenge himself to write from a perspective not so much like his own. So of course I was disappointed when the protagonist of "Project Hail Mary" felt a LOT like Mark Watney. I do think that Ryland Grace is a different enough character that it doesn't seem like the same dude, but now it kind of feels like Andy just wrote "Artemis" to prove a point. As if to say "See, I don't have to make my main character exactly like me."

In the movie Casablanca, Rick Blaine is a strong man who regularly skirts the law. Imagine replacing Humphrey Bogart with Jenna Ortega. The movie would fall flat. Replacing Rick with a beautiful and sassy woman like Jazz will fail. It is exhausting how often books and movies force-fit women into unbelievable roles. When will our culture get past the delusion that men and women are interchangeable in every circumstance? God help us. Jazz is intelligent, beautiful, shapely, short, and young. I think of Jenna Ortega. Women like that have much easier options for wealth than lowly and sometimes dangerous criminal smuggling. To counter the misogynist attacks that are sure to follow, I really liked the character of Administrator Ngugi. She is a conniving power player who makes things happen. She built a city on the moon! Her character is believable. I enjoyed everything about the book except the unbelievable casting of a woman for Jazz. If I substituted a young Harrison Ford character for Jazz, then the book would be believable.
