Artemis: The Feminine Archetype [Video Essay]
This is my first in a series of video essays about the Feminine Archetypes, named for the Greek Goddesses, based on the book Goddess in Everywoman, by Jean Shinoda Bolen.
As a child the Artimis is the Tomboy who does not play along with the norms of traditional gender roles. She would be more interested it sports or the outdoors than cooking or playing with dolls. the Artemis is likely to have a strong affinity for horses that goes along with her free spirited will and love of nature. The adult Artimis because she defies strereotypes is also strong willed, and determined not to be put in a box, to subjugated by anyones expectations. She does not allow others to tell her what she is supposed to like or enjoy. She does not respect boundaries. Because of this the Artimis will but heads with dominate characters, particularly a dominate mother, father or authority figure that will hold the Artemis back from her true calling. Good video, BUT: Artemis is an archetype that represents a great balance of feminine and masculine traits. The archetype talks about her strength of will, self reliance, assertiveness, independence in all aspects ( physically, emotionally, etc) and overall purity. She is not “more close to the guys and likes to do guys things”. She is a moon goddess and therefore she is a loner- again pointing to her independence, self reliance and even mysterious nature. Her being by herself is part of her essence. She doesn’t search for external validation. She is indifferent to the male gaze or gratification and punishes those who will see her unveiled. She has will power of her own therefore she doesn’t need to marry because she is that to herself in herself. Artemis is complete in and of herself and that’s why she is “pure” and “virgin”. She doesn’t go in competition with guys and tries to show she is just as good as them because what she is doesn’t stem from the ego. She isn’t loud. It’s not about her being almost a dude ( GI Jane or other army chicks are definitely not a pointer to Artemis at all) , but about HOW she goes after her target, whatever that may be. The arrow- her will in other words- is piercing unmistakably whatever her target is, and that is her masculine trait perfectly integrated. Perfect will, laser focus, all on her own. That is her masculine aspect, not the fact that she hangs around guys over girls or that she is more a dude than a girl/woman. She is always surrounded by animals which obey her, meaning she dominates the bestial nature, who is under her authority and will. The unconscious elements are integrated in other words. She is perfectly aware and self sufficient. She lives in the woods( the unconscious) and dominates it without force, but with clarity and naturalness. It has nothing to do with wanting to be literally in the woods lol. Maybe it can point the fact that she lives outside of society’s expectations and demands- again pointing at her independence and self sufficiency. The characters in books and movies can definitely point to the archetype but they are not THE archetype. They are on a journey to integrate the archetype, to find the assertiveness and will power that Artemis has. Artemis represent the SELF in the psyche, balanced perfectly between the opposites. P.S. The analogy of the boardroom and the archetypes was brilliant! Keep up the good work! 👏🏻

Thank you so much for your detailed comment! I really appreciate the discussion and I do agree with a lot of what you said. This essay started out at 45 minutes and a lot got cut. I might re visit the topic some day. One thing I could’ve cleared up is when I said “the Goddess Artemis” I was referring to her representation in mythology. And when referred to “ the Artemis Archetype” I was referring more to the current depiction in current popular culture. There’s a chicken-or-egg question that comes out of discussing archetypes. Do we like depictions of archetypes because they remind us of ourselves or do we act like archetypes because we like the way they are depicted. Again thank you so much. Your comments mean a lot to me.

@@MinimumEffortMedia I agree with you- It can be definitely tricky to figure out the archetypes. And it takes time to do that on a deep level, it’s not a “I’ve read a book once” type of thing. There are many gods and goddesses (or archetypes) and it’s not like I know them all at all, so I wouldn’t interfere to give my opinion on that many of them ,because I didn’t studied them all (again, it takes time and effort to figure them out) . But Artemis is one I can say I know pretty well, so I tried to share my understanding of her. I am very happy my comment was well received by you! We are all here to learn from each other and it’s a beautiful thing when people are open to discuss and exchange ideas and perspectives. I love your channel and you do a fantastic job! 👏🏻💪🏻

Yes!!! Thank you for this explanation. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that the huntress archetype is about "being one of the guys," which it's really about having integrated masculine energy. I'm so glad you clarified this.

This is really beautiful. When I read Goddess in Everywoman, twenty years ago, I identified Artemis in my archetypes - a side of myself that I had not previously acknowledged. Thanks to Jean Shinoda Bolen, I was able to embrace the freedom of Artemis and her passion for nature and live her life to the full, shadow side and all.

@@MinimumEffortMedia well you covered that archetype as the shadow but didn’t discuss the other qualities that make the trickster a culture hero, and someone who’s mischievous tendencies aren’t necessarily all bad. Like Hermès himself is creative and goes out of his way to often help hero’s. Sometimes deceiving the gods in favor of humans and someone who displays a vast amount of intelligence, as well as immaturity.

Kind of like the other side to this archetype. Someone who isn’t just a chaotic force. But someone who created the lyre etc.

For all of his immaturity he displays a wisdom not seen in the other archetypes. Like a jack sparrow type character.

Anytime Jordan Peterson & Co. keep going on and on about Christianity, even though they’re just talking about myths as a whole, I wonder why they leave out Greek mythology. There’s a reason these myths are still being told these days. The only archetype Christian mythology has to offer seems to be the supposedly great mother Mary - you know, the one who chose to have a son even though she knew he would suffer and be killed. I can certainly imagine more noble things than that. Hence, I like the idea that there isn’t just one single mother archetype - because it really just seems like that’s all the conservatives have to go back to.

These goddesses are all post-Patriarchy and subordinate to some Father God, which is upside down and backwards. These are tropes, fashions, but not archetypes.
@MinimumEffortMedia
@MinimumEffortMedia Жыл бұрын
An archetype is a very typical example of a certain person or thing. A reoccurring symbol or motif in literature, art, or mythology. They are completely open to interpretation, if you have other examples I am open to exploring them. But it’s hard to deny that these “tropes” or “fashions” do not reoccur in art and mythology.

I honestly believe that the Artemis archetype is mostly a shadow of the Maiden. Almost all characters deny the Maiden, their femininity. I think Artemis is most likely to be animus possessed. The integrated nature of the Crone is fundamentally different from the immature Artemis who again denies her femininity and lives in masculinity.
@WeCaredALot
@WeCaredALot 2 жыл бұрын
Not true. A mature Artemis does not deny her femininity at all. In fact, there was a time where Artemis was actually portrayed as a mother goddess (see the statue of Artemis Ephesus). She is also a protector of women, girls, and childbirth -- what could be more feminine than that. Too many people MISCONSTRUE Artemis as "unfeminine" because they have a shallow view of femininity to begin with.
