I heard Holly and Emma's perform this song at Pete's Clearwater Festival, not long after my beloved peace activist husband and best friend died of pancreatic cancer, and while I was battling breast cancer recurrence... and though I'd known of Holly Near for decades, I'd never seen her live. Though there was no stopping her powerful voice starting my hair-trigger tears streaming, I listened intently and heard her sing "for to be hopeless would seem so strange" -- which it had, cutting me off from the whole world. Then "it dishonors those who go before us" -- which made me stop and calm enough to think of my sweetheart listening, then "so lift me up..." just swept me up, against my angry will, to renewed determination. Thank you, Holly, for helping to bring me back into the broken but still healing human family

I grew up on this...this and cris williamson and Meg Christian... It just brings back so many memories and tears and to think how much work is still to be done and the world we live in.. But these songs bring me so much comfort..
