These are watersoluble pigment blocks made by Viarco, the pencil company from Portugal. They are great for tonal studies!

I don't know what I was expecting with the white, but that opaque was definitely not it! I think I expected it to just be so watery you'd end up with chalky patches. It's nicer than I thought! I don't think I'd want anything but that white though 🤔

Right? I was like “these dark colors can’t even be opaque i don’t even wanna KNOW what color this white is gonna be” i assume it was going to look like painting with milk or something. But boy is that a beautiful white!

I haven't read all the comments so maybe someone already wrote this, but for maximum color pay off I dip these blocks in water and then paint with them directly onto the paper. I love the white and was also pleasantly surprised to see how opaque it was!

Thank you for showing us the entire set! I have only the black block and I mainly use it to draw lines with the sides. After that I go in with a slightly damp brush and dissolve part of the line, turning it into a shadow. I love how that works. For the whites I use gouache, but this white graphite looks really lovely. 👍

I bought the white after seeing this video and I love it! I've never tried gel pens and white gouache, and honestly don't think I'll bother anytime soon - I'm super happy with the block, and it'll last me a very long time I'm sure. I want a really good black version, something that gets as effortlessly pigmented and opaque as the white one. I'm using ink for now, but I'd love a solid block or pan that I could just keep in my palette and use with a fine brush.

Thats really interesting that the graphite block behaves different compared to the graphite in the tin. I thought they would be all the same. Because i couldn't decide which one to get, the graphite stick or the one in the tin and then i got the stick because it was cheaper ;). Maybe the one in the tin has the best quality ? How about making a video comparing all three graphite versions? The stick, the block and the tin? :)

I wonder, the tin has obviously been in use for some time, contrary to the new block in the set. Could it be that the graphite in the tin especially because of the closed lid has become moist with use and therefor more easily soluble? It is the same producer after all.

I've watched other artists review these sets. But everyone else takes the block out and colours the paper with it first, then adds water to the paper (as you did at the 3:02 mark). However, I think yours is the only review that has put water on the block to lift the colour and then put it on the paper. I don't think there's any "wrong way" but just seems you are the only one that does it this way... that I've discovered so far. :) (I think if I had this set, I'd use them the same way you did at the start)

@natford8271

The grey one, you could draw it onto paper and then use that as a palette. From Jackson’s website: “Inspired by traditional tailor's chalk, ArtGraf Tailor Shape is a rich, water-soluble block of pigment. It is extremely soft and provides artists with a wide range of shades depending on the amount of water used, from light, transparent tones to deep, rich, opaque colours. When diluted, the Tailor's Shape acts similarly to an ink, it can also be used dry as a drawing medium by itself. It can be used as an entire block to draw or paint with or colour can be picked up from the block with a brush, similarly to how you would use traditional watercolour paint.” So it sounds a bit like Derwent Inktense pencils and paints.

Wow, so interesting! When you first laid the colors down wet, they didn't seem like they would go together, but they actually complement each other quite nicely! I wonder if you scrubbed a bunch of that graphite on a separate piece of paper, could you then use that to get darker values (i.e., almost using that like a pan)? Not that I need more art supplies, but if I ever decide to treat myself, I'll consider this....

Whoa! That white is the main surprise here. It's more opque than white watercolour! Very impressive. Will you consider using the white more often? Or any if the artgraf blocks? That graphite in the set though is not very impressive. Too difficult to get a good tint strength. Which is surprising given how easily the graphite in the tin dissolves.
