Between the hypnotic oboe statements opening and closing this work lies an impressive variety of moods and permutations to capture and hold interest. It's one of Bliss' works I hadn't heard before; I'm glad I had the opportunity to do so.

I've never heard a piece by Bliss that I didn't like. His music seems ever beguiling and fascinating --- less obvious than Walton, and less posy-precious than Britten. I object strongly to the description of him as the "finest second-rank British composer". So there!

I agree! "The 2nd-to-finest first-ranked British composer" sounds so much better!

Indeed. Walton, Britten and Bridge constantly are thought as the top Brits in the 20th Century. Bliss' music stands equal to theirs in every respect.

He’s underrated but trying to pretend he’s the equal of Walton or Britten at their best is nonsense
