Oh wow, this is such an underrated work. I have this recording and the sheet music gathering dust on a shelf. My piano teacher told be about it nearly 40 years ago, and I've had an ambition to perform it ever since. Having to pay to play has always been obstacle (public domain from 2026?) plus it's a bit off-beat for the average audience. But hey, I had the same issues with Ravel Left Hand, and that came right. So I think I need to grasp the nettle before my technique gives out. That piano re-entry in the first movement is so like a 1930's version of Brahms 2.

That opening came as a surprise after listening to a calm piece...

I have adored this concerto ever since I heard Phillip Fowke playing it live with the RSNO under Tod Handley back in the 1980s. It's a glorious work, arguably the finest piano concerto by British composer, and deserves to be far better known. Thanks for uploading this excellent performance.

Ebenezer Prout's organ concerto is actually good and isn't just random noise like this is, so you're very wrong.

@@Whatismusic123 Idiot troll who doesn't seem to know that Prout wrote two organ concertos

@@Whatismusic123 You are obviously a troll. Prout wrote two organ concertos which are third rate (at best) and only ever performed by amateur forces. Bliss's piano concerto has been recorded by world-renowned pianists starting with Solomon and including such names as Gina Bachauer, Peter Donohoe, Phillip Fowke, and Piers Lane. None of them would waste time and effort on a piece which was "just random noise". It is your right not to enjoy it if it isn't to your taste but describing it as "just random noise" only serves to show your own ignorance.

@@davebarclay4429 I'm pretty sure I wrote my reply to a completely different comment on an organ concerto video. KZbin sometimes breaks like that. Though I am still right. It doesn't matter if some world renowned orchestra or pianist plays the work, if the work is garbage. That's called a waste of talent.

Solomon made a great recording of this. Many pianists avoid this work because of that opening...understandably!😊 Hats off to those who have the courage to perform this in concert--the rewards are surely worth the risk!😊😊
