Grew up in the 80s listening to alt/new wave/goth..realized the Damned single Alone Again Or 1986 was a cover in about 2000. Had to listen to the original, so bought Forever Changes CD...big fan ever since.

LOVE was way more appreciated in the UK than in the US. They did tour the US in 1968, including my town, Detroit. They did two days of shows at the Grande Ballroom.

Arthur did come to the UK several times in the 70's, i saw him in the spring of '74 at Croydon Greyhound. Nobody gave a **** about him then , now everyone says they loved him .

@@elainekerslake6865 I think you have misunderstood my post. People DID know who he was and didn't want to listen. The British music press reviewed his albums and gigs at the time , he wasn't ignored by them , he became 'cool' because over the ensuing years supposedly 'cool' people spoke about him. He was out there to discover all the time and people didn't bother. Does everyone now own albums like 'false start' 'out here' 'reel to real ' ? No they know him off the back of 'forever changes' and that seems even now , to be the sum total of their interest.

@@MrPhilfridge it appears that I didn't misunderstand anything. Foursail was poor in many people's opinions. Peak was reached in 66/67 and that was it. Why go on about poor work when the GEM is there for all.

I saw Arthur Lee in a club in South London around 69/70. He was with other musicians. I don't remember much except that it was a great gig and that he lived up to expectations.

When "Forever Changes" came out, even the Beach Boys weren't the run of the mill Beach Boys themselves and shelved an album that was ahead of it's time as well.

"You Set the Scene" is the culmination of Forever Changes, just as was "a Day in the Life" for Sgt.Pepper. Both musical milestones in mid 60s psychedelia.

Ahead of its time for sure. I think this album came out before Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper I believe. Arthur Lee sure told it like it was. I think a movie about Love back in the 60's would be awesome!!!!

Exactly! One of those times when it's not good thinking "oh, damn, we should have filmed that" (even some filming outside the Wisky A Go Go between Clark and Hilldale or Bido Lido's would have been amazing.

A dreadful interview by Jools Holland who has obviously not done any research and Arthur Lee is well aware but remains polite. RIP Arthur, you will be remembered long after Holland is forgotten.

Agreed! There is no authenticity and LOVE in Jools Holland. While Arthur is humble, Holland is trying to be a star/exciting/captivating, it's his job, I get it. And then ... there are people who don't need aplaus and are legends anyway. I can't handle the beauty and sadness of "Alone again or" - the version on Jools Holland's show is my favourite. It's been such a blessing having found Love :)

@Sam Smith Good to see your great talent with words. And how you manage to grasp what is actually being discussed. To help you to try and understand this. Arthur Lee was a great artist years ahead of his time. Jools Holland is a fairly mediocre musician. For Holland to interview Lee was just a joke. Lee was well aware of the stupid questions that Holland was asking but always remained polite and dignified. Perhaps before making stupid comments do some research.

When the band broke up, every guy went professional except me, I joined a yogi community. If I had stayed professional, it's likely I wouldn't be here writing this. Arthur wrote about politics and black issues and personal things. He was hurt by a woman and he wrote Message to Pretty.. People check to tell me What they think is right I don't listen to them Don't know day from night I'll go through life searchin' Tryin' to find the one I'd go slip, slip, you'd go slip, slip away... Come on, Art could play great guitar, drums, and keyboards. Bryan MacLean wrote a couple of the songs including Alone Again Or but Arthur had the better voice for the song.

If you listen to what other Love band member’s recollections, you get a very different story. The contributions of Bryan McLean and Johnny Echols were ignored and they were not given any credit. Arthur Lee was very talented but Forever Changes would not exist without the rest of the band.
