Old maps show Arthur's Butt at Llantrisant. Ross Broadstock, Tim Lewis and Robert Pearce explore what this refers to and visits the sites. Includes a walk around historic Llantrisant and some great scenery on this crisp December day in South Wales.

Great info about castles positioning to either protect the locals or to surpress the locals. Its almost as if they were TRYING to ignore ancient Briton history ! Hwyl Ross.

Yes, the Wynt (Billy Wint) has the outline of a fort, a high point above Llantrisant. Caerau (Forts, plural) overlooking Rhiwsaeson, also takes in Caerlan, a smaller but vital part of the chain between Llantrisant and Rhiwsaeson.( The east Caerlan field is where Dr. William Price was cremated.) East of Caerau hill is a natural progression up to lower Garth and the Garth itself. I'm looking lately for evidence in the ground of any ancient defences on lower Garth. Not far from the Caesars pub is a stone burial chamber which if I remember correctly, was moved in the 60's. The Smaelog mountain, across the valley from the Wynt also has some tumuli on the western edge just outside the forestry. Of course, the forestry has well hidden any evidence of ancient fortification. Also worth a mention, and further inland, is Penycoedcae and Y Foel above Llantwit Fardre which I remember having the remains of ancient mining. Just NE of the Wynt there is Beddau (Graves) though where the graves were has been long built over without any records of such. I'm still trying to find out why the is Castellau just outside Beddau, as it points to castles (1200th century) and not forts. (Caerau) Anyone know?

Yeh this site is obviously as 'Arthurs Butts' is just part of the defensive system protecting the valleys behind, with rhiw season and the garth etc continuing that natural line. If its remembered as Arthur's defences i would say its right, particularly as all the historical evidence places his kingdom here.

Siege of the Saxons in the 60's. I think the was a shot of it in Errol Flynns Robin Hood, but I'm not really sure.
