I love Time Team, it calms me, it always leaves me absolutely content when they pack up their tools on the eve of day three. It is strange, I watch TT to forget all the gruesome things that occupy my mind everyday like senseless wars, pandemics… but the people of the past often died of exactly these reasons I try to forget for awhile.

To other Americans confused when they were talking about “grinding corn”: In the UK apparently the word corn can refer to any cereal crop. This includes wheat, barley, millet, etc. Americans usually only use corn to mean maize, which is a new world crop and would not have been available in iron age Europe.

Thank you. I was just talking to the screen saying "what do you mean corn...they did not have corn...corn is a grain of the americas...they did not have corn...well, if they had corn, they had ships that took them to and from the americas, to get corn." : )

Thank you, Jana, I am Native American and fully cognizant of "Corn" meaning other crops. My own Miwok people in California used to grind Acorns for soup and bread. Up at Chaw-se, also known as Grinding Rock has HUGE rock slabs with dozens of grinding holes used over thousands of years. Nice clarification for others.

I explained this to my slightly puzzled wife. Corn in Ye Olde Aenglish meant 'grain crop.' It was only when maize became a huge staple in America that we started to use it for that one crop and it lost its meaning in American English as a reference to other grains. It's still used as a general term for 'grain crop' in the UK though that might be falling out of favor due to American influence.

Question: What were these people so afraid of that they decided to live on a fortified hill? It was a difficult place to live if for no other reason than they had to carry all their water, except for what they could gather from the rain up a steep hill. That included water for their live stock. It takes a lot of fear to decide to live like that. Modern conveniences like automobiles and water systems tend to make us forget the price that past generations had to pay for a hilltop view.

NO No NO Tony. Corn is a new world seed. They were likely grinding barley, oats, or wheat.
@baldrickt.adder-slayer287
@baldrickt.adder-slayer287 2 жыл бұрын
Corn is a more modern term for "kern" (where we get our word kernel from). All grains were considered "korn" in the Old World. What is grown in the Americas is "maize", not corn. Corn in the Americas is a generalized "hick" marketing term for maize- so as not to confuse the simple people. Not MY definition, but marketing terms designed by large land owners, corporations and marketing firms that has come to define a single, hybridized, profit-maximized commodity "yellow field corn".
@Jerbod2
@Jerbod2 2 жыл бұрын
If you knew anything you'd realize Corn is probably meant for something different than maize (as the whole world calls it but you) as this is the old world, and maize is indeed from the new one. In Dutch it's called koren, corn in English. Education is key, dont be a smartass when you don't even know the basics.
@skildude
@skildude 2 жыл бұрын
@@baldrickt.adder-slayer287 Thanks for the pedantic slap in the Face at America. Corn is Corn and Maize is corn. It is and always will be. What you define as corn are Grains. Wheat, Oats, Barley etc are grains not corn. Check the Oxford English dictionary. Funny how they seem to think you are incorrect. Clearly It is your definition of some fool with Dunning-kruger working for them. All other grains are not considered corn. They are cereal grains. Just because some backwater british Cliff Clavin claims that grains are corn doesn't make it so. the B was intentionally left lower case for irritations sake. Here's another slap at your ego. Kern means CORE in Dutch and in English denotes typesetting in printing. Would you care to go another round on your wheel of foolishness.

@@skildude Clearly someone who thinks that 20th Century United States is the center of ALL planetary intelligencia. First mistake most american high school students make. The rest world DID exist before you were born. And continue to develop according to THEIR experiences and histories, and not YOUR ethnocentric contexts. The rest of the world does not define itself according to your limited and delicate sensibilities. Dictionaries have adapted and changed as cultural and linguistic norms have changed; and they have done so ever since Dr. Johnson wrote the first one. You might want to try taking a history, anthropology or archaeology class that's not written by political ladder-climbers.
@bartonbella3131
@bartonbella3131 2 жыл бұрын
@@baldrickt.adder-slayer287 yes, yes, because no one from the old world ever came to the new world....yes corn did refer to other things but it's dumb to think the people who emigrated from the old world and grew kernel corn or maize, didn't also grow the other types of corn over in the old world. They didn't need "Hick" Terms for the simple people when it's just the natural linguistic changes that happen over time. No need to make yourself sound so pompous. It's just the natural progression of common words transferred through a mixture of wide swathes of different people and language. Remember, Alabama and England are the same size and the UK could fit in Texas about 5 times. There were huge populations from all over the World intermingling to create a new group of languages and colloquial terms. Kind of like, cigarettes and fags or torches and flashlights, chips and fries etc.
