I really love Watts’ mood stages during this entire thing! - When she first grabs him he’s nervous and in shock but he calms down and talks casually since she’s only holding him above the ground - When she pushes him over the edge his voice is shaking but his ego takes over “you can’t treat me like everyone else” - He tries dealing with her ”Salem told you to get me back”, but when Cinder says “Salem isn’t here right now” he starts being scared. His eyes dart around looking for a way to escape - He is freaking out since she might actually kill him, but then he starts laughing. “You know what? If I’m gonna get thrown off a building by this tantruming child I’m gonna go out telling the brat what she needs to hear!“ He even lets go of Cinder’s arm, the only thing holding him to life. This was a suicide run, she might let go at any second so he gave her a verbal smackdown she needed. It’s like the 4 stages of getting threatened: shock, bluff, bargaining, panic, acceptance

To be fair, those kids were training to be huntsmen at the time. They were taught how to fight, either from combat school or other methods, and most likely learned how to unlock their auras and semblances. Watts never did. He never trained as a huntsman he was a scientist and doctor. True, he unlocked his Aura, but that can only do so much protection. Not to mention he never unlocked his semblance either. That's why he was trying to takedown Iron from a distance and with technology. Because he was outclassed in every other category. Considering that, I think it's safe to say If Cinder dropped him, he still would have died.

Even after cinder left him to die, He still won. Cinder killing him only solidify that she's only prioritizes momentary gain than plan out and go for a bigger picture. Her actions in season 8 caused emerald and hazel to defect, one of them killing themselves. She squandered a possible ally that would have been as loyal to her like emerald was and killed another cause she was called out and her feelings got hurt. Sure she gotten the staff of creation, but the cost of getting it was way too big for the bad guys. 2 Useful baddies dead, 1 is in the void with RWBY, One other has defected. Mercury will probably defect as well since Emerald will be going to Vacuo too, abd Salem already knows what happened when cinder went to get the relic from the grimm arm. So yes, Wattson indeed saw her for what she was, trash.
@0axis771
@0axis771 Жыл бұрын
And based on what happened in V9, Team RWBY and Jaune are going to come back, more resolved and very likely even more powerful than ever before, at least Ruby and Jaun. Not to mention that Cinder has effectively prevented Salem from ever getting the answer out of Jinn by using the last question, meaning that now the Relic of Knowledge is useless. Salem was probably planning to use that in order to learn the location of the Vale Relic. And now that's gone. Cinder may have won the battle, but she might very well have cost Salem the war.

The voice acting is so good, you can tell Watts has been holding this in for the longest time watching Cinder constantly fail in her plans. His laughing just shows that no matter how intimidating and imposing she presents herself, all Watts sees is a pathetic, broken child who takes away from others what she can’t have. He knew he was on death’s door, but he didn’t give in to begging for his life because he knows that’s what Cinder wants: power and control. If he was going to die by a random girl with a bad childhood and personal vendetta, he was going to go down making it crystal clear how much of an entitled brat she is, and how she constantly believes she “deserves” everything like she’s the only one who’s ever suffered and getting mad when she can’t have everything. I feel bad for Cinder’s childhood but holy shit, she really needed this lecture and if she was going to cry so be it.

@bangscutter
@bangscutter 3 жыл бұрын
Cinder was pretty competent in Volume 1 - 3. The moment she became the fall maiden, she became overconfident in her newfound powers, thinking raw strength alone was enough. Barging in and going toe to toe with another maiden with similar power level is 50/50 chance of victory/defeat, not a very wise strategy and odds. Then on top of that, her obsession with revenge made her make irrational decisions. Raven was able to manipulate Cinder this way, knowing her desire for vengeance can be used against her, and it worked.
@linforthewin4385
@linforthewin4385 3 жыл бұрын
well i wouldn’t say he “destroyed her character” he just pointed out all of her mistakes while saying how narcissistic she is. and i’m pretty sure that’s the point. she’s so power hungry she doesn’t care what she has to do to get what she wants, and that’s her downfall, as we’ve seen multiple times. and he calls her out on the fact that she thinks this way because she’s suffered her entire life, which is also bad, but understandable and realistic

Even in volume 7 she came pretty close the accomplishing her goal while in volume 5 she didn’t accomplish a thing.

Arthur Watts, of all of Salem’s Pawns, he’s the ONLY ONE who never got side-tracked with petty revenge. Cinder becoming overconfident, arrogant of her own abilities ever since she killed Pyrrha in Vol 3, has been losing again and again when she tries to do thing her way instead of the proper way. Tyrian, the most devoted to Salem, allowed his bloodlust and madness to ‘play with his food’ so to speak during Vol 4 when he was simply told to retrieve Ruby. And yet he failed because of this. Hazel, during Vol 5, lost his shit when he IDed Oscar to be the next Ozpin, trying to focus him down explicitly the whole fight through until it was clear it wasn’t going in their favor. This brilliant scientist of a man kept to his job from the start, no BSing around, even when he had his chance at revenge against Penny’s father. And here he is, at his absolute finest, tearing down the veil of delusion and exposing Cinder for what she has become. A bloody migraine. Props to this madman for sticking it to her, even with nothing left to lose for saying it.

Watts has no combat semblance as far as we've seen. He wields possibly one of the weakest weapons we've seen in the series. Literally the ONLY REASON he's a threat is because he comes at you sideways, he dances around combat and avoids head to head fights. Full frontal attacks only work if your opponent is weaker AND stupider than you: intelligence trumphs brawn every time, and that's Watt's weapon. Notice he doesn't once bring up beacon because, despite her eventual failure, Cinder did EVERYTHING RIGHT. She successfully 'killed' Ozpin, took the maiden powers, destroyed the whole of beacon and killed the strongest of the next generation of Huntresses, and she did it because in that season she exemplified every trait Watts claims you need in his speech. She literally lost because of chance, nothing more and nothing less. If Ruby didn't have silver eyes, if she hadn't arrived the exact moment when she did... well, it would have quite literally been end of story. Cinder hasn't grown stronger... she's gotten weaker. Her loss to Ruby has shaken her to the core, pushed her into believing that strength is the only thing that matters. Leave it to Watts and Neo, two 'warriors' who predominantly fight with their heads to show her the flaws in that egotistical mindset. Watts KNOWS he's on the losing side in a straight fight... that's why he rarely loses.

Yes, but Watts's death also highlights one of Cinder's biggest character flaws. Watts was Salem's smartest lieutenant and of great strategic value to Cinder as well, but Cinder killed him simply because he called her out on her bull@#$%. She now only cares for power, sees herself above reproach (aside from Salem), and will kill anyone who suggests she is wrong, even if they are trying to help. Cinder is slowly collapsing under her own ego. I will point out that I haven't seen the newest season yet, so I don't know what happens there.

@@alexdillahunt6908 Agreed. Though I would argue that she'd backstab Salem in a big way if she could get away with it, considering her blatant disobedience. Pretty sure the only reason Salem didn't just yeet her into the sun after Altas was because she came back with the relics. Cinder is petty and vindictive and her discarding of Watts right off the bat was just reinforcing this. SHE thinks she's clever but is done in more often than not by her own viciousness. She hasn't made an appearance in volume 9 given that RWBYJ are in the Ever After for this one. But something tells me she hasn't learned her lesson.

It's almost like the show's crew suddenly became self-aware Being honest, this scene almost reignited my interest in the series When you think about it, Watts' speech can also apply to RL people There are many persons who suffer one way or another, either due to internal or external factors. Many truly privileged individuals try to sell the idea that suffering makes people entitled to everything; but, the truth is it doesn't If you want something, you have to earn it, become worthy of it. Instead of blaming others for your shortcomings, follow a path of self-improvement without forgetting your choices not only affect you, but also affect the people around you
@crichton397
@crichton397 3 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree, except that telling everyone they shouldn't blame others, while somewhat logical, puts an emphasis on any problem you face is yours to deal with. That's great on an individual level but easily leads to apathy and people feeling "I had problems and I dealt with it so I have no capacity to help you with yours." We see that quite often whenever someone boasts about how their life is great because they worked for it, and anybody in their vicinity who didn't get the same just didn't work hard enough when obviously that isn't always true. And I have to ask, why didn't this ignite your interest in the series. Volume 8 is the best the series has ever been I think, from a narrative standpoint. It's the Season 2 Walking Dead, Season 3 Lost, or Season 4 Breaking Bad - a lot of setup is done, character relationships have changed or been irreversibly altered, allegiances are shifting and our heroes' original goals are challenged stronger than ever.
@OverlordGab

@@crichton397 That's why I finished with the reminder that our choices not only affect us at an individual level, but also the people around us That's the opposite of apathy. And while self-improvement is mostly an individual's own effort, developing maturity brings humility, which makes a person aware of their own limits and acknowledge that there are things they're not capable of doing on their own and there will be times they'll need the help of others to keep moving forward Hence the importance of friendship, companionship, and family And as someone who experienced a severe loss, I can tell the best way to overcome pain and anguish is seeking to help others in any way you can Volume 6 was my limit. Chapter 3 got me hyped for a series, hype that was immediately destroyed by the next chapter, and despite the improvement on action scenes everything went downhill story-wise from that point onwards, and yes I know volume 5 was a disaster in that regard but I still had hope. I decided to drop the show back then, and all I heard from my fellow friends who kept watching the show is how much potential it wastes. But rather I think that he's WILLING to die at any moment so long as he's the smartest man in the moment. He's fine if James kills him, because he's happy to see his old friend crack under the pressure and give up everything he ever was as he succumbs to fear. He's fine being killed by Cinder if it means he can finally let her know what an abject failure she's been. This whole speech is easily one of my favorite scenes in the show and when we see Cinder falling into tears at the end I truly believed that this was going to be her wake-up call and could now become an antagonist that's more than just unga bunga give me power, given how she seemed to lighten up a bit around Arthur after.. but nope, she reversed back to her usual trash character soon there after.

Same here, I was very disappointed in what became of Watts at the end of the volume in being betrayed by Cinder yet again. He was nothing more than another lacky she threw away. I guess that goes to show that we can't buy into Cinder's crap and all of it is an act to manipulate people to work for her-- which is really disappointing for a villain.

The fact that this moment was followed up by Cinder doing the exact same thing she's always done (lying to and betraying her allies for petty gripes and trying to take all the power for herself) and not only succeeding (at least in terms of the way the ending is framed), but killing Watts in the process, proving him wrong about her, proves that this show really doesn't understand why Cinder fails as a character.

The moment is followed up by her manipulating Watts and Neo and disposing of them once they're of no more use because they're liabilities (they know about her using the relic and have been repeatedly hostile). She takes Watts' words to heart, if only to re-evaluate that she needed to play smarter (like she did in Vol 1-3) instead of relying solely on power and intimidation all the time. Cinder is still petty/spiteful but she didn't let it get in the way of her plan in those last chapters (if the void didn't happen to teleport people away, she would've killed a lot of her enemies in one fell swoop). She played her hand well at the end of Vol 8 and I don't think she fails as a character because some people don't Like her.

They really did a superb job with this scene. The choice and timing of the music was perfect, the flashbacks to Cinder's past, the doomsday landscaping in the background, the voice actor of Watts nailing the rhythm to his part and hitting every beat along with great tone and timbre, and how much what he says just hits you in the chest. Watts speaks the truth: the world doesn’t owe anyone anything. Not happiness, not wealth, not power and not a good childhood. We all have to make good with what we get, and if we want it to be better then we have to work for it. It makes me wonder what would have happened if Cinder had held out just a little longer and been able to emancipate herself from her abusive owner (I refuse to consider them her foster family as they made it clear she was only ever an asset to them) Would she have become a good person? A huntress fighting on Ozpin’s side? A rogue like Raven? A criminal like Roman Torchwick? Or would she still have ended up with Salem anyways?

Also, let's not forget that Cinder, unlike the rest of Salem's inner circle, has never been able to accomplish any of her goals on her own. She had to ambush the Fall Maiden with an assassin and illusory Semblance just to suck out her power, and only finished Amber off when she was comatose and couldn't defend herself. Watts was the one who hatched the plan that escalated the Fall of Beacon, and Emerald and Mercury did their parts to get the cogs spinning. Cinder did nothing there. She nearly got bested by a mentally unstable 17 year old girl, even after that girl lost half of her weapon, then she gets blasted so badly by a 15 year old girl that she loses her arm. Her grudge with a child caused Salem's plan to get derailed, then later cost them the Relic of Knowledge, not to mention Tyrian losing his tail. Then when Cinder thinks she can steal the Winter maiden's powers and recover the lamp, she gets her ass kicked again and fails to secure the lamp. It's only because of another one of her collectable assets that she gets in back. Afterward, she holds yet another petty grudge that nearly gets her killed, going against Salem's orders in the process, and the second Salem is out of the picture for even a second, Cinder threatens to kill one of Salem's best henchmen. She's not just a migrane, she's a major liability.

One thing that I'd like to point out about Cinder is that when she wins a fight, it's only ever because she has someone to help her or it's because of her maiden powers. Yet her own fighting is very sloppy. When she's alone with someone of equal or greater skill, she often loses. When she's up against Raven and Penny, other maidens who are more clever or experienced than her, she loses. She stole the maiden powers and saw no need to improve her own skills or even think things through, assuming that they would be enough to save her.
