Yes I agree the 6400 is worth paying an additional $150. As noted by caliv0608 and others the current price difference (for me) is $599 versus $999. In this case I don’t think the 6400 is worth the additional $400-700. It seems in his closing statements he might agree.

You know the A6100 is good when all he can come up are nothing but BS reasons. - No premium feel? Who cares about that when you're busy framing. - No weather sealing? Pretty sure majority of people looking to buy a cheap mirrorless like the A6X00 line are non professional photographers who wouldn't be a photographer for NatGeo. - Viewfinder? It's a freaking mirrorless camera. - A tiny bit smaller buffer? Again, majority of folks looking in to the Sony A6X00 line are non professional photographers. No one of those would be using them to do professional sports photography. Overall this is a bad review of the A6100. I've seen better objective reviews for this camera.

The a6400 is "so much better" is very subjective and not true for every use case. It might be true for a professional video blogger such as yourself....but for the average weekend photography enthusiast or someone who just wants to take great pictures and occasional video, saving $200 and buying the 6100 is the way to go.

I own an a6300 and my wife surprised me with an a6400. I'm pleasantly surprised by the difference. The autofocus on the a6400 is incredible.

I had researched both and opted for the A6100. Between the two, I know B&H has a special body-only $150 difference. K&M is $300. Depending on where you order from from, date and specials, the difference is closer to $250-400 less for a 6100 for a turn-key package. On both models the lens and camera coupling are susceptable to weather. Yea on the S-Log. Some have commented that there's a lot you can do in post with Davinci Resolve. Yea on Magnesium feeling more solid than plastics. I had done some 200g vibration/drop tests on aircraft electronics and I agree with this comment: "Plastics generally do better when they strike a hard surface because the shell can flex slowing down the impact jarring the interior components less than a metal rigid body would. A metal body falling against concrete would be a hard shock to everything inside." Regarding features, going from a 6000 to a 6100/6400 is more significant wouldn't you say ? Having the Flip Up Screen, 4K video & Mic Input are significant. I'd like to see the price of the IBIS feature on the elite models come down as they are over-priced since the video still looks bumpy on the 6500/6600 Perhaps when the 6700 is introduced ?. As you see in many comments on lenses, price should be a factor in comparing the degree in which model 2 is better than model 1.

I've seen this 150$ thing mentioned a lot but for 900$ I got the 10 - 50mm OSS and the 50-215mm OSS paired with the camera and the a6400 is 1299 with just one mid range lense.

The current retail price for the a6100 is $598. And $698 for the one with lens kit. For 598, the body is great to get 4k, flip up screen and AF tracking. You can use Portrait mode with contrast/saturation dialed down and grade that.

If you frequently shoot in aperture priority, then the a6400 (also a6300,a6500,a6600) allows you to set the minimum shutter speed before bumping up the ISO. This is really handy when shooting sports shots. Sony calls it "ISO Auto Min SS". I use this all the time and really value this feature. The a6100 (and a6000) does not have this feature.

Great video, but.... You are a little confused as to what White Balance means. I have seen you make the same erroneous statement in a previous video. White Balance refers to the color temperature of the image, not the brightness. So it controls how warm or cool the image is, not how bright or dark it is. Anyway- I really find high value in your content, so please do keep up the good work!

How can you determine the speed of the shutter from the sound? If they both are 11 fps, that is their speed. Your perception of speed judging by the sound is ridiculous. Otherwise a really good video 👍

The price difference in Europe is even a bigger problem! 899 euros for the A6100 body only and 922 for the A6400 body only, 23 euros of difference! Just for the weather sealing and better EVF those extra 23 euros start to sound like a bargain when picking the A6400. I think the A6100 is a really nice camera however I don't think Sony really thought out well their pricing strategy with it (Much less in the European Union!)

I regret buying the A6400 about 1 year ago. Today i would buy the A6600 only because of the missing IBIS in the A6400. I use mostly the sigma prime lenses and the sony FE 50mm1.8 (fullframe lens) and none of them has OSS at all, that is a real bummer. I know the IBIS from the A6600 isnt the best in the world, but better than nothing. With the A6400 and lenses without OSS, videos are horribly shaky. And no, i dont want to carry a gimbal around all the time.

I think of all of the cameras in the a6xxx series the a6100 is the best value for photographers. For video it's the a6400. There are folks for whom the $150 difference can be a make or break decision.

You probably have the electronic front curtain shutter turned on which makes it sound slower as it only flaps once. If it's turned off, it flaps twice making it sound faster. I agree, the a6100 should be $699 at the most.

Superb, don't know why KZbin stopped recommending your videos, but doesn't matter cause I will never forget this channel. Really helped in finaliseing the decision to buy 3xA6400(2 for photo with 1st one with Sigma 16 & 2nd one with 56mm & 3rd one for video) instead of 2xA6100(photo work) & 1xA6400(video work). Please suggest an good macro extension tube for Sigma 56 f/1.4, also currently I am confused between Sony's 18-105 f/4 vs 16-70 f4 for shooting wedding videos with A6400. Also a good gimbal for that, previously did finalise A6100, 16-70, Boya BY-MM1 & Feiyutech G6 plus for travelling & wedding video work. But since, using S-log will be beneficial for proper color grading now finalised A6400. G6+ has limit of 800gms, now increased weight demands another gimball. Does power zoom helps a lot in video work?

I'm still shooting with the a6000. Been thinking of upgrading to a6600 or 2nd hand a6500 (much lower price) mainly to get the IBIS, better AF, bigger buffer, better EVF and bit better body. I may just wait until they upgrade the sensor. In the meantime I have just bought on good sale price the new Sony E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS which in my mind seems a better investment as I've decided I'm not going to go to a full frame system in the future.

I just got the a6100 because I got it for 589. I already have an A7iii so I’m using this for vlogging only pretty much. The difference was 300 dollars so for me it was worth it. I won’t be using the viewfinder much but really needed that flip screen and mic input. Totally agree if the difference was 150 dollars but found this on sale and jumped on it. Great videos man! Also have my original silver a6000 and another white a6000 modified for IR. 😆. Love Sony cameras!!

I've got the A6000 and was thinking of upgrading when they brought out the A6400, once I'd become immune to the cost of it here in Oz. Now there's another one in the lineup to consider. I wish Sony would name their increasingly better models in ascending order so I could keep track of what level to go for. :)

Sony are trying to do that. It looks like they are going to produce the a5100 and a6000 forever, but stop the a6300. The only confusing is between a6400 and a6500. I prefere my a6500 because of the IBIS and a better grip. I take pictures of landscape and architecture and not of people, cats and dogs.

Really great breakdown of the differences between these two camera, I hadn't heard some of these things mentioned anywhere else. It wouldn't have influenced any sort of buying decision for me, because I bought an a6400 before they even announced the a6100, but I occasionally wondered if I had just waited a few months whether I could have gotten everything I cared about and saved a little money. Seeing this has definitely put those thoughts to rest.

@Don Mega Having upgraded from an a6000 to an a6400, I have to say I would still take the 6400 even at a considerable price difference. So many small improvements, but the biggest one being that I was never really happy with the low-light performance of the a6000. High ISO images just didn't look good. I was much happier with the images I get from the 6400 even at higher ISO, and being happier with the output is worth the extra cost to me.

I always appreciate all these electronic reviews, but as with most electronics it’s always a numbers game. If you save $200 you can buy the next level camera. But if you save $500 you can get the next next size up. If you throw even more money, you can potentionally shoot the next Avengers’ film. Lol Getting good gear is important, but sometimes we forget to create. You have to remember that a lot of the tools released now eventually become obsolete a few years later. I appreciate this video in particular because I learned a few more things that I didn’t know before between these two alphas. But it just convinced me more about getting the 6100 as a starting camera, specifically because I’m going to be working indoors with a more controlled setting. Still, this was a great video. Thank you!

Been using Canon 70D and I do mostly photos at low light and gloomy weather conditions. Planning to switch to sony along with the sigma 16mm 1.4 lens. Should I be worried about the battery life in A6000 for photos only? or Should I consider the A6100 given the budget is close to $1000.

This is a small rant from someone who tried to get into photography in 2020. I was trying to get a camera lately (i want to do studio photography) i couldn't get my hand on anything and thanks god the internet can give unlimited amount of raw samples. In my opnion aps-c cameras that try to sell for over 500$ are laughable (all of them wothout an exception). I wouldn't spend a dime on an aps-c camera even the newer ones. For full frame there are good options and honestly mostly the new ones . But they are way too f*cking expensive to the point where i would rather stick to my smartphoone and do heavy editing. What i noticed is the medium format sensor starting from newer mirrorless cameras all the way to incient 2006 digital backs are unbeatable in image quality. A 2006 digital back will beat any crap that canon and nikon and even sony throw at as at these days when it comes to studio photography. I think these companies should ditch the micro 4/3 and aps-c and go full frame or medium format and the the price. It's 2020 ffs. Smartphones are doing okay for the average cosumer now i don't think amyone in their mind set will spend ~$1000 for a camera that if you put the picture in anything bigger than a 6" display it looks like total garbage.

Great video. I am going to upgrade my a6000 mostly for the auto focus. I don't do any video but may in the future. I was going to go with the 6100 but pretty much came down to all the things you pointed out. Also I believe the 6600 and the 6400 have upgraded shutters that are supposed to last much longer. Another thing is if you are really tight with money the 6400 is available used for a decent price right now.

Coming from full frame Nikon D750, bought an a6000. Took me months to like it. Noise is terrible. Recently bought an a6400. Noise is better but I needed a new program to convert RAW files which I didn’t have to do with the a6000. Its many more steps now. Not the worst but worth noting. I adapt my a6400 with a Commlite Enf-e1 I believe it is to my Nikon glass and I’m finally happy I can do so successfully. My wish is that Sony sneaks a full frame sensor in one of these crop bodies for a super small package. THAT would be awesome.

@@crismejeli2082 I bought an a6100 recently and a sigma 30mm f1.4. It was the perfect upgrade from a normal phone in my opinion. I found new at a good price and I would say if you are just starting photography mostly as a hobby, yes It is worth it.

I got the 6100 and I love it ! 6400 and 6100 is a minor difference. Almost the same thing other than the picture profile which I don’t use.. and the few other small differences you mentioned the 6100 is a amazing camera and I think it will do awesome I have two of the sigma primes but got the 6100 with kit lens last week for 750$ Can’t beat that price . I’m sure it’s a holiday sale , not sure if it will go back up but I felt that was great price 750$ vs a 1050$ right now for the same sale on the 6400. I feel it’s well worth that price I had the 6000 for a few years and I enjoyed it as well but the 6100 does offer a lot more and thankful for the headphone jack for sure ! I agree - now A6100 is 648 USD, A6400 898 both body only. Issue I have with the A6100 is the slow shutter speeds it picks in P and A modes with auto ISO, but apart from that, I am very happy

Sony marketing did screw up the price of the A6100. It's just too close to the A6400 as you say. I just recently purchased the A6400 based on the advantages over the A6100.

Please bare in mind that you are talking to a global audience. In Australia the a6100 body only can be had for $1200-$1300, whereas the a6400 is $1800. Its a very big difference and is a lot more than the other APS-C competition. For most people getting into APS-C from a DSLR, its too expensive when you can buy a Panasonic G5HS for $900 or G9 for less than that. The a6100 is no way an entry level camera in most overseas markets. The $500 price point locally is the spot and for that you have to go used or buy something like a G7 which is as good for stills and 1080p, but not 4K.

If it were me, I would try to get an A6400. Unless you are selling both lenses and are going to have one (16-55), its hard to spend $1400 on a lens.

well a6100 is about $400 cheaper than a6400. Those added features are for pros who I don't expect to buy neither when there is the full frame from Nikon D850(my dream camera) and Sony a7iiir /iv.. So save your money and settle for the a6100. You might never use any of those added features.

Went from a6000 to a6400 and I’m super happy. I believe the a6100 has a limited record time in video as the a6400 does not. Another reason to avoid the a6100.

I tested the A6100, and it does not have the 30 minute record limit, so that is a plus.

I've had my a6000 for 2 years (almost 40k shutter count), this past week I've been considering upgrading to the a6600. I do a huge amount of scene/portrait shooting at night time/dark places with three fast primes (no OSS), IBIS will be a massive help. When there's no time to set up the tripod, I attempt handheld in burst mode and end up taking 100 shots of the same thing hoping 1 will be perfect. The native ISO is better but I don't know how much more it'll help in practicality. A lot of people I know shoot with a7 series but that's so much more money than I can justify for nonprofit fun, plus I'm thinking to stick with APSC for the well established cheaper/larger range of lens, and to stay a bit different from the crowd I guess. The new Sony 16-55 AF would be great, never used an AF/zoom lens yet.

What are the enhancements and, saddly in sony's case, downgrades they made to the 66000 in comparison to the 6400? I got a 6000, but after making a couple of bucks with it i'm planning to go for the 6400.

Now it is 650 vs 900 USD (A6100 vs A6400). it is almost 50% more. I was going to get A6400 but I got 2 A6100s. The main drawbacks are that there is no Auto ISO minimum shutter speed, and the A6100 chooses very slow shutter speeds (1/30. 1/60) in P and A mode rather than increasing the ISO to 800 or so. I compared to my old A6000 that instead tends to increase the ISO. Anyway I am amazed by the AF, it is so great. I shoot mostly portraits and lifestyle and that makes it framing and shooting so much better (love the eye AF improvement). Regarding picture profiles for video I can still lower contrast, saturation and use neutral color for video. EVF is not as good but I can live with it. A6400 is the best deal, but A6100 at 650 USD is pretty good. Many mirrorless at that price do not have an EVF. Main gripe is I can't really use P and A for street photography as the camera picks slow shutter speeds in Auto ISO (i have not seen a reviewer mention the issue, it would be great to push Sony to deal with the issue in a future FW update). Thank you for the breakdown. What do you think of the 250 dollar difference between the 2 cameras?

The only important thing about the Sony a6100 is that it uses the older smaller and cheaper NP-FW50 battery.

I bought the a6400 even though the Sony APS-C body is definitely not cheap and lacking in ergonomics, a6400 still is the the most reasonable choice among the 61/64/6600. Had the a6100 been priced $300 cheaper than the a6400 I would've bought the A6100 instead before knowing all the corners Sony had cut, now knowing the differences, I'd say the a6400 should be the minimum for an experienced shooter. P.S. I've been noticing this for a while that even though you're a casual shooter, the quality of your reviews is really good and is getting even better, with personal experiences not listed anywhere on specs.

It's a bad idea to use full frame lenses on aps-c bodies anyway. 1. The focal range 36-105 is not as comfortable as 24-75. 2. These lenses are built for another sensor, they won't be as sharp on aps-c sensor (it has much smaller pixel size) as they would be on full frame bodies. 3. They're bigger than they need to be for a kind of work they're doing. Why bother buying Tamron or (new coming) Sigma zoom lenses if you can buy Sony 16-55 2.8 G Master lenses, that are apparently pretty good. Or Sigma prime trio of course.

Arthur does nice lens reviews - but this video title is obsolete. The price of the a6100 at B&H has been dropping to below $600 with kit lens vs. $900 for the a6400 with the same lens. Seeing mixed reviews on the usefulness of pictures profiles on the a6400 vs an Average user setting White Balance and Creative Styles on the a6000. If you don't mind spending $1200 there are some deals now on the a6400 with the 18-135 lens. Or you can wait for the a5 full frame for $1k. Don't forget the monthly fees on Premiere Pro - over 5 years that's another $1200 😤.
