Another great video on arguably the best - and most loyal - Sony APS-C KZbin channel. Sony take note please and start sending those press event invites! Not far off from that 100k subs' mark now I see as well... which will be rightly deserved when it finally happens.

Sony has LOST THEIR MINDS not inviting you to camera launches, in particular the A6400 and APS-C in general. I really look forward to a future review of the mythical A7000 and I *really* hope you'll have that review (or preview) on the day of announcement because they got smart and invite you.

 ARUN RAJ and David Corsi - My team helps Sony's digital imaging division with media outreach, so I thought I'd comment specifically on this. Sony loves honest opinions, and Arthur and Jenessa have great, honest opinions. In Sony's view of the camera and video market, Sony makes the best gear, and welcomes people looking at it with their own opinions and their own perspectives. We never tell the press what to write or how to do their reviews. When it comes to lens reviews, remember that Sony made the e-mount specifications published, so other companies could create lenses. Having a wide variety of products that work with Sony's cameras, without having to reverse engineer a closed mount system is, as far as I'm concerned, a real plus. Believe it or not, but there are a huge number of great channels with good followings that KZbin doesn't bring up in discovery, and I'm always really happy when I find someone like TechnologyMafia. We've only recently found this channel, which is why Sony hasn't reached out to them. Sony have reached out, and I'm going to do so as well. Rest assured that we're as happy to see great, independent creatives in this space evaluating the possibilities as you are. :) There are no lost minds here, no conspiracies to hide honest opinions. Just new connections to be made, new relationships to forge, and new content to support.

@@davidschloss2656 Can you kindly give this site some detail of the manner in which Sony and you have now ""reached out" to the site producers? It is no exaggeration to say that this site would have been responsible for the sale of a large number of a 6000s, which as I understand it, is the best selling APSC body.

Except for one picture, I consistently preferred the images from the Zeiss lens, particularly the color balance (though not by much). However it’s more than twice as expensive as the Sigma, which seals the deal on which is better in my book.

@DanPandrea

I tested the 56mm for about a week and a half and I agree it’s surprisingly sharp and the bokeh is very creamy. However I noticed significant barrel distortion. You can see it in this video as well, when comparing the two buildings. Look at the lower left corner on both photos and you’ll see the Zeiss doing a better job handling distortion. I think the lens profile isn’t properly implemented in Adobe Lightroom, as I constantly had to resort to manually straightening the lines in my photos. There is also some chromatic aberration on high contrast, in focus areas. It’s no surprise here, as the 30mm f/1.4 DC DN has the same behaviour. Nothing that can’t be fixed through Lightroom. All in all, the lens is really great value for what it delivers and it’s become the benchmark for future portrait lenses for Sony APS-C.

I do like the versatility of the Zeiss, having an APS-C and a Sony full frame. The Zeiss is very sharp on the full frame and I’m OK to loose a little bit of sharpness to use it on my APS-C to gain another focal distance. It’s expensive but for me (enthusiast)it’s like having 2 good lenses.

Am I too late to comment?😁 First off, thanks for what you do. You certainly are the best source of information for us Sony APS-C shooters. For the most part, I would agree with your assessment. (not always though). I do doubt that anybody, except maybe you, would be able to see any difference between these 2 lenses at normal viewing size and distance.. There is however, a big advantage to the Zeiss for those of us shooting Sony FF and APS-C Currently, (3 yrs later) the Sony 55mm is selling for under $600 new, and under $500 used. It's nice that there are now so many really high quality, small full frame primes, that overlap so perfectly between the 2 formats. Of course, I own the Sigma 56mm, but I'm trying to cut down the number of lenses that I own without cutting quality or significantly increasing size and this Sony looks to be a good choice, for me. I'd love to see you do some reviews of some of the newer, smallish, FF primes and how they perform on Sony APS-C bodies. (Sony 85mm F1.8, Samyang 75mm F1.8, Sony 35mm F1.8, Samyang 24mm F1.8, etc) Again, thanks for the comparison. Well done.

Bruce Coffman The way to do that would be to shoot both lenses on a full frame camera in crop mode. The results would very likely be identical. I'm wondering if the Zeiss slightly less performance is due to the fact that it's designed for FF instead of APS-C? Also the Sigma is more recent so one would assume that more recent designs should be better. If I only had my A6300 I would definately go for the Sigma. However I may wish to upgrade my Sony FF 50mm 1.8 and then the Zeiss 55mm F1.8 would be the logical choice. It seems that Zeiss in general (for E-mount) could do with some new glass. Sony as well at least in the 'budget' range as they are getting outclassed by Sigma and Tamron.

I got one small question; have you thought about and looked into batteries? I have seen you recommended Wasabi chargers but there are several third party manufacturers of batteries and while my Sony original batteries NP-FW50 batteries have 1020 mAh, there are batteries claiming to have up to 1950 mAh, maybe there are even higher rated, but it is still almost twice the mAh if that is true and that should have an impact. But wouldn’t you expect a slower shutter speed to offer a softer image??? And the 56mm doesn’t have any specific “cut out” for APS-C, in fact only the full frame lens here has a rectangular cutout. I also have the Sony 50 mm F1.8 OSS that works very well with the a6000 that is without IBIS. - both the Sigma 60 & 56 have no image stabilisation. FF lenses on Crop Sensor cameras is not their most efficient usage.

I caught @2:44 that you said "...f1.8 should be sharper...". Is it because it is a Zeiss or because it is f1.8? Because larger aperture doesn't automatically means better IQ. The concept of stopping down and getting sharper image is the following: the characteristics of a lens is better in the middle than at the edges. So when you stop down your lens, you are more and more excluding the incoming light rays from the edge of the lens and using the light coming across the middle. Therefore, if you have a f1.4 and a f2.8 lens, the f1.4 stopped down to f2.8 will be producing better IQ than the f2.8 wide open. But if you already knew these things (which I assume), then I am sorry for being a smartass. But maybe it is useful for others. Thanks for the great video! Looking forward to get this lens in the future.
@marcdevries9027
@marcdevries9027 5 жыл бұрын
The idea that a f1.4 lens stopped down to f/2.8 will have better IQ than a f/2.8 which is wide open is false. The reason stopping down a f/1.4 lens helps is that it is very difficult to make such a fast lens and have the corner sharp. But getting the corners sharp at f/2.8 is just as difficult on a f/1.4 lens as on a f/2.8 lens. What typically happens is that people compare a top-of-the-line expensive f1.4 lens with a buget f/2.8 lens. And if there is a difference at f/2.8 it is mostly because you paid for better quality across the range. But don't take my word for it. Look at some real world examples: Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS USM vs Canon 24mm f/1.4 L II USM www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=788&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=480&CameraComp=979&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=3 The L is a lot more expensive and, but the real world difference between them at f/2.8 is extremely small. You pay that extra money to use it at f/1.4 not because of the difference at f/2.8 Another example: Canon EF 28/2.8 vs 28/1.8 The f/1.8 stopped down actually performs a bit worse: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=254&Camera=453&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=253&Sample=0&CameraComp=453&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

@@marcdevries9027 Thank you for taking the time for the answer, I really appreciate it! Yes, in this sense, I get your point. In my explanation I tried to approach it from the physics point of view. Of course an L lens will perform better, because it is probably using better quality glass and coating. But, if you take two hypothetical lens, one is f1.4 and the other is f2.8 at wide open, then the f1.4 should be giving a better IQ stopped down to f2.8 than the f2.8 wide open. But here we suppose that everything is the same except, the diameter of the lens. I base this on the basic principles of optics. So, if you start to decrease the diameter of the aperture, then you exclude more and more "scattered" light rays, and let only the parallel ones reach the sensor. This will improve IQ.
@marcdevries9027
@marcdevries9027 5 жыл бұрын
@ as you can see from the links I gave you, the L actually does not perform better. Even though it is using better glass and coating. So if real life shows something different than the theory, there is probably something wrong with the theory :) I understand where you come from with your theory with the two hypothetical lenses. Let's take that lens with a f1/.4 diameter. And lets put black tape around the other edges, so that it covers everything outside the diameter of f/2.8. We have now done the same as stopping down the f/1.4 lens to f/2.8. But what if we instead of putting tape around the edges, we would actually grind it down to the f/2.8 diameter. We now have a lens that is f/2.8 wide open. In both cases at f/2.8 the paths of the light rays through the glass is the same and there should not be any difference in the image quality. But as the f/2.8 uses less glass it is a bit cheaper to make than the f/1.4. When we open up the f/1.4 lens to wide open it has again become worse than the f/2.8 as those light rays that go through the 1.4 areas of the lens are not focused as precise and will deteriorate the image. So yes, stopping down improves the image quality. But if the f/1.4 lens has worse image quality wide open than the f.2.8 lens, then stopping down might only get you on-par with the f/2.8 wide open.

Michael Paz - You’re assuming Sigma is using science that wasn’t known when Zeiss released their lens. There’s lenses that are decades old from Japan, Germany and the USSR that stand up to lenses made today. It’s more likely that, because Zeiss is a bigger company, they cut corners and decided to ride on the coattails of their own brand.
@16-bit-trip5
@16-bit-trip5 5 жыл бұрын
@@Station9.75 All things being equal newer lens usually employ newer costings, designs, and manufacturing techniques that typically result in better performance when compared to older models. Obviously there are other factors that come into play but in general I would expect a high quality prime made in 2019 to outperform a similar one made in 2013. While it may be a bit overpriced I don't think Zeiss/Sony cut corners with this lens. The 55mm 1.8 is an excellent full frame lens that happens to work well on APS-C sensors. I'm pretty sure if we compared it to those decade old lenses you refer to it beats them optically. That's not to say those lenses are bad or that the Zeiss has better character than them but in terms of sharpness, contrast, and resolution the 55mm 1.8 will pretty much best any similar lens from the 1960's-2000's.
