Articulated Goldie and Rusty Trombone Fishing Fly

The Articulated Goldie is a go-to streamer in Northern Colorado and Wyoming. The olive with copper flash version, known as the Rusty Trombone, is also a popular and productive variation. Our guide customers have been asking for this fly for some time. We are happy to finally have it. While we have a couple of techniques that we like to use when tying this fly, the overall design and materials list is straight forward. Beyond the White/Gold and Olive/Copper versions, black with red flash or grey with silver flash would both fool their share of fish.
Tying Notes:
• The Body. When tying the body, there are three ways to wrap the materials forward. From least durable to most durable, the three options are:
1. Wrap the two materials forward sequentially.
2. Twist the two materials together prior to wrapping the twisted rope forward. Brush out the rope while twisting them together and after tying in the twisted rope.
3. Put the two materials into a dubbing loop, spin them together, and then wrap the resulting rope forward. Brush out the rope while twisting the loop and again after tying in.
• Securing the Wire. The most durable way to secure the wire between the two flies is to push the wire ends through the cone, down through the eye, and then back through the head of the cone. Use thread to secure it all. To make it bomb-proof, add superglue prior to wrapping over all the spyder wire braid butt ends.
