The show has never been worse. Jackie and Artie were the glue in their respective eras.

I agree, but i still watch oldschool stern. Oldschool now, being like 2012 erra and prior. Really liked the 1994 era most. However i got into stern late, being in Australia had no fucking idea it existed. Sal and Richard, let alone Fred, really kept the show going. Show really tanked in 2013 from what i've seen anyway. Watched a fair few years worth with the Tv version over the course of near 2 years straight, goes by "Artie TV" on youtube, howard in demand / E era. Anyway olschool shows and memories live on, i'll be their age still thinking of stupid bits that was on the show. Nothing today can compete comedy wise with the empire stern build. Lot of it has even aged exceptionally over time. Big shame with Norm and Gilbert also. Comedy is great.

Jackie is a really funny guy both in performance and behind the scenes. I spoke to him briefly after one of his shows years ago in Staten Island and then another time when he was selling his cd on Wall Street. I think it was Hot Dogs and Donuts. The police came by and had to break the news to him that he couldn't sell his cd on the street without a permit or else they would have to seize them. When Jackie had to break the news to Nancy who was there as well, it looked a live-action Stern show bit. She was cursing and screaming at him but he took it in stride and just gave out the cds to people for free. I was the last person there to actually pay for it before the police shut him down so the joke was on me. ;)

@josephkelley86415 жыл бұрын
Artie's an entity unto Artie's self. That chair needed/needs to be retired. .You can put another body in it - but that body is not going to give you what an Artie Lange can/will. Artie was just a revelation - still can't get over HOW seamlessly Artie did that job. i.e. Like he'd been there all of Artie's life. Completely understood what the position required - . Artie's genius mode - even as an all-star third basemen they said the same thing. (plus Artie had a stick, could hit - could hit anyone) .

The Stern show was at it's best overall in the 90s but I prefer Artie to Jackie as a personality on the show. I agree with Jackie in that Artie was a stronger personality. At the same time Artie couldn't write for Howard and Jackie was amazing at it. Both were great and the show misses both of em BIG TIME.

From the show, specifically Howard said it. It was brought up on the show a little while back that Howard brought up to Sirius that he would like to rehire Artie, but the people who run Sirius told him that he no longer has the budget for that.

interesting. jackie was mainly responsible for the stern show peak (early 90s writing for Billy West and making the unfunny stern actually funny). artie basically carried the entire show on his back during the sirius era (the show was worse, though). both were underpayed compared to the great fraud, howard.
@TehLivingDeath11 жыл бұрын
He'll do AGT for this year, and that will be the end of it. He signed a 2-year-contract, despite what he said about "deciding" to come back for a second year. Ratings are down, despite his posturing about it being the "Thunderdome, Robin...hoo hoo!" And that article about taking over for Fallon was nothing more than a Buchwald-planted story.

I think Jackie was making over 500K, which is way more than most TV writers get, and Artie was making 800K on satellite, which was kinda bullshit, since Artie got more integral to the show than even Robin in '07-'09. About what Andy Richter makes, though. A $1 million wack-pack compensation fund would be nice, considering the financials, but every millionaire in the world has horribly-paid servants. Is J.D. "talent"? It's murky territory. A clip-puller makes 40K elsewhere.
@josephkelley86415 жыл бұрын
Artie took the show over - I don't know any OTHER way to describe. Artie's rise in popularity - i.e. Artie became syn to the show. Howard CONSIDERED Artie a peer - that's how much respect Howard had/has - for the A-List comedians. Howard LIKES it when others become popular OUTSIDE of the show. Makes Howard feel like someone else is pulling appropriate weight. -Artie was unbelievable in that chair - just unbelievable. . .

If Gary makes $500K a year for working 3 days a week, booking guests and watching Will do all the day to day crap, JD should make a lot more. I just feel sorry for some of the guys that work so hard for peanuts to make the show what it is. Howard's cleaner has nothing to do with the show. Since the show generates millions and millions, Howard should look out for those that make it what it is..If Howard "loves JD like a son", why not pay him enough to move out of the ghetto.
@porpus9911 жыл бұрын
Well, Howard actually wanted to rehire Artie, but without his knowing Sirius took away the budget to rehire him even after promising Artie that he would always have a job there. Any way, i agree with you about Jackie and Artie. Howard is a great host, but the true comedy backbone came from Jackie and Artie. I personally was more of a fan of Artie.

it was 500 mil for 5 years to produce the show, including salaries, payouts for bits, paid appearances, paid guests, when you factor all that in there isnt a lot left for howard, maybe 20mil per year, and he deserves more than 20mil to be honest thats barely 1.5mil per year, barely 3000 dollars per show, after taxes almost nothing

I don't know how Howard's staff works for the peanuts that they earn. How can he make $100 million per year while his right hand guy who supplies him with clips makes maybe $40K, lives in a dangerous neighborhood, has to ride the subway in the middle of the night, has gotten mugged already.. It boggles my mind that he doesn't make sure that his dedicated staff is financially taken care of..Sorry but that says a lot about a man. Sure he'll never firre anyone, they work for peanuts!!

Yeah, pretty much. Apart from the occasional interview, i don't even bother with the rest of the show. There's hardly any substance to it, anymore. Nowadays, it's mainly just Howard berating the "schmuck of the day" and Robin constantly agreeing and cackling in the background. Even though she's not present in the studio these days, she has somehow managed become even more obnoxious with her inane quips. They've both become completely out of touch with their fans.

Artie's a better storyteller than everyone but the top five in comedy - Artie ranks right up there with Jay, Jerry, Bill Burr, Louie - cuz Artie instinctively/organically knows what's required leading up to the punchline;. -can edit as Artie goes. It's economical - no different than Howard's own gift for including ONLY THE RELEVANT. . .
