Artifact of the Week 20240126 - Service Stars and Veteran Patches and Pins

There are many awards and recognition that can be presented to volunteer Scouters to show appreciation for the value they have brought to Scouting and the BSA. A couple that may get overlooked are Service Stars and Veteran Pins.
In 1913 the BSA introduced service stripes to show how long a person had been a Scout or Scouter. Then in 1923, the stripes were replaced with service stars.
In 1917 the BSA took another step toward recognizing tenure in the organization by developing Veteran patches and pins. Veteran Patches, like Service Stars were worn on the official uniform, while the pins were to be worn on civilian clothing.
Today, any registered Scouter with five or more years of service to the BSA is eligible to apply for Veteran status. You can learn more at this link www.scouting.o...
Currently Service Stars and Veteran Pins top out at 90 years but who knows, one day we may find a Scouter with 100 years of connection to the BSA.
