I had a diet soda addiction for years. When I went plant based I switched to Zevia believing it’s a healthier alternative. I loved the stuff but kept hearing about no calories sweeteners not being good for health/weight. I finally kicked the habit and the biggest change I’ve noticed is that I no longer crave something sweet. It’s a huge win! Drinking only water now. 💦

My partner was hospitalized a couple years ago and the hospital's idea of a vegan meal was iceberg lettuce and ranch dressing (regular, so not vegan). When he begged for something other than lettuce, they gave him a cup of veg broth. If I hadn't brought him food from home he would have barely eaten. It was terrible.

13:23 Maltodextrin has a higher glycemic index (GI) value than regular table sugar, which defeats the purpose of a sugar substitute! So when I shop for stevia, allulose, or monkfruit products, I make sure to read the ingredients to make sure they don’t contain maltodextrin before purchasing.
@jklfds85

I grew up with severe seasonal allergies until I went strictly plant based...Now whenever I eat or consume anything with maltodextrin, it produces the SAME exact seasonal allergy symptoms in me(during the spring season and summer). I pinpointed it to the products I consumed that had high amounts of maltodextrin. After a bit of research, I discovered that it was a HUGE inflammatory ingredient to the mucous lining and just overall the whole body, as well as the gut. I try to avoid it, but not always able to. What I do to flush it out of the system(works also on other toxic sweeteners) is drinking several tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar with water. It works amazingly well and is healing to the gut and whole body.

I try my best to steer clear of sweeteners including maltodextrin, erythritol, aspartame, but there are some I cannot escape like saccharin and dextrose. Saccharin is in my mouthwash and dextrose tends to be in some of my fave food products. I would honestly love to see artificial sweeteners ditched and no longer used in certain products suitable for vegan/plant based eaters.

In my opinion, sugar alcohols like erythritol and xylitol are great for mouthwash, toothpaste, and tiny breath mints but should NOT be consumed in large quantities. I don't trust these sugar substitutes, because human biology didn't evolve to properly metabolize them. Some healthier sugar substitutes: 1. Unsweetened apple sauce: This provides sweetness. As an added bonus, this replaces the butter and eggs for baking. 2. More sensitive taste buds: If you go long enough without sweets (sugary or with artificial sweeteners), your taste buds will become more sensitive. Better yet, you may find that some of the sweet things you liked in the past will be too sweet for you, and this will discourage you from eating them again.

Not everyone is going, or is able, to follow a vegan WOE. Some people can't consume Soy proteins... Seitan is wheat gluten and those with gluten allergies/sensitivities can't consume wheat products. Beans/legumes have protein, however, one would have to eat quite a bit of them in order to get enough protein... if losing weight is a priority to improve health markers like prediabetes/T2 diabetes & improving insulin resistance veganism unfortunately, does not work for everyone.

It looked to me like the new studies on erythritol were reverse causation. I wish this would have focused a little bit more on whether a little bit is OK. There was a lot of going into not eating excessive sugar etc. However, if you're not trying to lose weight, and you're already whole food plant based, I was wondering if I could still have my little bit of erythritol all once in a while. Charlene, coconut sugar retains many nutrients found in the coconut palm - mostly iron, zinc, calcium, and potassium. These nutrients can support the body in numerous ways, but coconut sugar does not contain enough of them per serving to offer a measurable benefit. Palm sugar is a comparatively healthier option than refined sugar as it consists of less glucose and a low glycemic index. Palm sugar has a low glycemic index. It does not add as much strain to the heart as sugar or other sweeteners and stabilizes blood sugar levels.

I decided year ago when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I would not eat sugar sweetened foods or drink sugared sodas. As I replacement, I have an artificially sweetened soda whenever I want one. which is often. I am now 80 years old and healthy and not overweight. I was drinking "Tab" when it first came out and read where the artificial sweeteners would give me cancer. I decided to take the risk and drank it anyway. Later I read the test that showed the risk of cancer when used in mice was the human equivalent of 600 cans of soda daily. Every artificial sweetener is said to be really bad for some reason.....but I continue to take the risk and so far, so good. A few more years and maybe can say I am seeing the longevity effect of metformin which has recently been in the news.....that is a side effect I can live with... In the meantime if I want something sweetened with an artificial sweetener I have it, and do not worry....

Correlation isn’t causation. Layne Norton covered this. People who have had heart attacks have higher levels of erythritol in their blood. The body CREATES erythritol. These people were even consuming anything that had erythritol levels high enough to account for the levels in their blood. It’s present in people who have had heart attacks because the body produces it. Another fine example of people doing a fine job of misinterpreting data.

Why are we craving sweets!? Your answer is the food industry which has been pushing sugar in almost every foods you buy for the last 50 or more years. What was created out of all this is an addiction to sugar that causes all these diseases you see today. I'm a T2D person that has not touched sugar for 11 years that controls their disease by low carb zero sugar diet exercise. I certainly stopped any cravings for sweet things years back but enjoy a cup or two daily but with Erythritol/Monk fruit sweetener now this controversy with Erythritol has since frightened the daylights out of me. I now have to rethink the very low use of it until the real facts of damage surfaces. I do not use any other artificial sweeteners in any other food I consume.

A little bit more time consuming but healthier.

Thank you for this video! Just yesterday I was trying to figure out the erythritol topic - I’ll pass on the potential thrombosis. P.s. I did the 21 Day Vegan Kickstart about a year ago. I was apprehensive and anxious for about a week, but I’ve since maintained this healthy WFPB diet. I feel better, look better, have more energy, im happier, and I’ve lost another 30lbs transitioning from my previous ketogenic-ish omnivorous diet. I now identify as a healthy vegan.

So, on a healthy diet, it's ok to sue artificial sweetener? Dr B keeps giving examples of eating double bacon burgers!

it's probably safe in small amounts. dose makes the poison, i think. but i still would rather just use real sugar.

Nitrates in plants help your bacteria convert it into Nitric Oxide, it's the good stuff that keeps your blood vessels open.

So did he just say basically "the fat we eat is the fat we wear"? It's eating too much, in a caloric surplus, that makes a person obese. Sure, with a higher fat, processed food diet, it's easy to eat in a calorie surplus. But this idea that eating whole food, plant-based vegan is the only way to get there is just wrong. Lots of very lean cuts of meat that you could eat and still keep your caloric intake from fats under 10% or what ever Dr. Barnard recommends. In fact, if I substitute my tofu with boneless chicken breast, I'd be eating 50%-70% less fat. As for causes of type 2 diabetes: From the NIH: ============ What is the main cause of diabetes type 2? Overweight, obesity, and physical inactivity You are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are not physically active and are overweight or have obesity. Extra weight sometimes causes insulin resistance and is common in people with type 2 diabetes. ============ From Diabetes UK: ============== Does sugar cause diabetes? There are two main types of diabetes - type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We know that sugar does not cause type 1 diabetes, nor is it caused by anything else in your lifestyle. In type 1 diabetes, the insulin producing cells in your pancreas are destroyed by your immune system. With type 2 diabetes, the answer is a little more complex. Though we know sugar doesn’t directly cause type 2 diabetes, you are more likely to get it if you are overweight. You gain weight when you take in more calories than your body needs, and sugary foods and drinks contain a lot of calories. ============== So the same answer holds true for fat. It contributes to diabetes (type 2) if it puts you in a calorie surplus and makes you overweight or obese. A bacon double cheeseburger from 5 Guys has 1060 calories. A large fries from 5 Guys has 1314 calories. There are 302 calories in each burger patty, 80 calories in 2 pieces of bacon. Their buns have 236 calories. So the bun itself is about equal to a burger patty. So if you just have 2 burger patties and bacon, that's 684 calories in total. Maybe folks are gaining weight because of the other 1690 calories they're eating, not to mention all the other food during the day. It's the standard American eating diet that causes type 2 diabetes, not any specific macro nutrient. Hyper palatable food the encourages overconsumption. Not "fats", not "sugar", not "meat". Lots of eating patterns have been shown to reduce the levels of diabetes. You use science and medical sounding words, but you're not thinking like a real scientist. There's no problem with your personal bias, but to omit other dietary patterns still not being intellectually honest and makes your take on a lot of things (like artificial sweeteners) suspect.

Coconut sugar over coconut fat? Are you leading your followers to Alzheimers and cancer faster than ever? Will you share how your dietician Susan died because many end stage cancer patients given few months to live were able to thrive by removing carbs and sugar? Check out the rice diet from Walter Kempner, Barnard isn't that far off, it's much better to eat sugar than to eat fat. Diabetes type 2 is caused by fat blocking the insulin receptors. Check out Mastering Diabetes or dr. John McDougall on this, both will explain very well. My husband is also t2d he's already down with his medication 80%, we don't limit fruit and he has some date sugar in his thee. We do limit dietary fat and his insulin reception has vastly improved.
