I think the simple point that you need to tailor your entire army to make artillery usable shows how bad it has gotten. I love the manticore to the depths of my heart but honestly, the only good artillery piece is the deathstrike and that is purely because of the fun factor

That and why can Leman Russ tanks be taken in 3's whereas basilisks can only come solo per detachment slot? It's silly, they don't even have damage 3 for a round that's arguably more devastating than a battle cannon

@@jamesloder8652 Yeah but its funny and honestly, unlike any other artillery piece it can forcefully clear out a point for a turn minimum or force the enemy to sacrifice so its better then a basilisk or manticore who will be stopped by a single terminator in cover or with a shield

@jakubm1459 totally disagree. I've been playing with artillery since 9th dropped, and it's not easy to just plug into any list, but it's definitely viable if you figure out what your game plan is.

If I don't tailor my regimental traits and advisors to it, it is blatantly inferior to the russ and honestly to even a valkyrie deepstriking behind enemy lines. It lacks the tougness to go into the line of sight and it lacks the accuracy and firepower to pose any significant threat to any backline units equal to its investment

Couple of points you didn't cover; the Expert Bombardiers trait doesn't require that the spotter unit have Expert Bombardiers - just that it has the Vox. So, your Scion detachment can spot for your artillery. Makes that 12" much easier to handle. Secondly, since your MoO gives out reroll 1s to all Guard Artillery, your Commissar can hand out Pound Them To Dust on top of the reroll 1s. The result of this is that adding a MoO to your Scion deathball and having them spot for your parking lot is something to seriously consider.

When the codex was new I explained to a friend who felt mortars was weak because they didn't do all that much damage that the point with mortars isn't to do good damage, it's to do meaningful damage. For example, killing those four servitors standing on the back objective.

exactly, they are the perfect unit for holding your back objective too. Since they are infantry they can raise banners first turn. And shoot away after that.

Expert Bombardiers should've just been a special rule on the relevant sheets like with Land Speeders/Whirlwinds instead of a regimental doctrine.

I'm going to be honest: indirect fire sounds even less viable now than when I started the video. That much investment just to harass my opponent seems like a good way to ensure I lose the center of the board and then get my fragile artillery killed on turns 4-5.

If you tailor to arty and bring loads you also have to really think about your target priority. You will be playing more cagey but won’t have melee power to meet melee armies head-on in the middle. So you have to stop them with the slowdown strats or take out the key larger units early. You can screen off a single unit or character with some chaff infantry a few turns in a row, but you cannot hold off a whole force or something with clever mobility tricks. If you just run the commisar with a set of field ordnance instead of basilisks you can play your russes midfield and the arty becomes the annoyance. Unless you are playing Tau it will take some time to shoot all your stuff and get to the arty. The guard can still field a surprising amount of stuff in a list. Guard has always been about target priority. Some things are poison for our lists and cannot be allowed to live more than a turn or two. Having arty lets you start chipping at those things turn 1, they cannot hide even if they can reduce damage intake.

I agree... Wasting resources to make indirect fire "meh" at best is a surefire way to start down several hundred points.

Guard arty was way more fun when we had blast templates and scatter. Fire in the general direction of something and you can still get lucky and hit something else. I guess they want us all to buy batteries, russes and dornes and then they bring the cost down and let us squadron basilisks again. My 3 basilisks are on the shelf a bit and some FOBs or a mortar pit get playtime. It might also be fun to try the mech’d guard with arty. Also really agree with the role of arty. They are really there to deal with something you cannot push your way to deal with. Guard is not very good at punching through to that msu sitting on an objective. Even with lousy hitting and weak shots they have to keep a backup there. Maybe it requires you getting lucky, but the threat alone is worth it.

The whole game was more enjoyable in the template days. It also was an innate counter to the whole "block everyone up in the shadows of the buildings" thing the game has become. The game is so boring now that every weapon is just a machinegun.

Ok so Field Ordnance Batteries have Artillery and Platoon, so would benefit from both the take aim order and the bonus from Expert Bombardiers. It would at least cancel out the minus from Dense terrain and turn it into a plus. Master of Ordnance could drop in with a Scion Command Squad with Vox Caster (also good for boots on the ground)? 2D6 shots hitting on 4's re-rolling 1's to hit potentially S8 with Creed's Order still -2 and D2. Maybe not amazing but not too bad either?

Now count how much points you need to make a "not amazing" shooting. And having Ursula sit in the backfield with her three orders and auras is not a good idea.

Note that the Expert Bombardiers ability doesn't specify the vox-caster unit has to have the doctrine; just the artillery piece. So you can drop Scions with vox-casters in basically wherever to set it up.

I don't like bringing them because for 10 more points I can bring a basilisk, and for 25 more points than a basilisk I can bring a Leman Russ. It's unfortunate because I love the model (I used to work with a towed artillery piece similar to the model) Leman Russes are so good that it's really difficult not to bring as many as you can fit.

When I started my guard army I really liked the idea of infantry, cavalry (Krieg Deathriders), and the stationary artillery from Forgeworld. So it would be something like early WWI era with no tanks or other armored vehicles like chimeras. My hopes were that my artillery would be able to provide any damage I was missing from not bring tanks. However it doesn't sound like that's the case, unfortunately.

Hear me out, Earthshaker Carriage Battery with a platoon command squad sitting next to it. Take aim order for +1 to AP since they’re platoon key word, plus master of ordnance for reroll 1s to hit since they are also Artillery key word. You got your Artillery support back it’s just not going to be particularly mobile

This is pretty much the combo i had come up with as well. I never moved my basilisks anyways and always kept them in cover so immobile isnt such a bad thing. I found it better to run them with a castellan or a death korps marshall with the master tactician WLT (the one that allows 2 different kind of orders I forget the name) it allows them to get the take aim order and the remain vigilant perfectus order to prevent deep strikes. I run really infantry heavy so i keep my command squad out in the field with the men. But i still have a master of ordinance with them.

I have trouble bringing artillery because 140 points for a basilisk is almost another Leman Russ and the Russes are just so good. I don't have enough Russ models so I end up bringing two basilisks in larger games. They are usually kind of middle of the road performers. They don't do a huge amount of damage but they do it all game long because they can stay so far away. I've found that I generally only fire indirect if I have to or if there is a special target hiding out of line of sight. Otherwise I direct fire them from all the way across the board. That said, I brought them in an Apocalypse game and shooting targets 10 feet away was a lot of fun.

Quad launchers are good as the shear volume of shots with the blast keyword is very good. 11+ models in a unit and then it’s 24 shots for 90 points a model

Honestly, I like the Wyvern as a cheaper-than-Bombast Cannons artillery piece, because it's 120 points, has Heavy 4D6 shots, and while it's Damage 1 AP 1, it's got double the wounds of the Bombast Cannons, has the Regimental keyword so that a Command Squad can order it from across the board, and most importantly, looks absolutely kick ass. (Plus, the extra little mini that comes with of the guy with the map can come in and serve as a Master of Ordinance alongside the Command Squad.) While the Wyvern may not hold a heavy support slot in my Strike Force, in favour of other heavy support units, it does have a spot in my Artillery Company Combat Patrol.

Interesting little tech piece that might help close the distance to enable Expert Bombadiers. Take Recon Operators, Take Armored Sentinels if the Scouts feel too flimsy, and park a Command Squad and Sentinels near the front of your deployment. Move 6 with Armored Sentinel and Command Squad plus whatever else you need from Recon, and then you can order Move, Move, Move to Sentinels to get them to waltz up the board another 10" with a normal move, or 16" with an advance if you want to forgo shooting. In Shooting Phase, If you move the 10" you can use Maverick Maneuvers to then move ANOTHER 6" towards the enemy. That comes out to a total of 22" with Recon, Normal Move, and Maverick. Alternatively you can go 24" if you forgo shooting to just Recon and then Advance. Is this genuinely good? Not sure, but I will start to give it a try in my upcoming games

Thanks for trying MG ! But I still think that you have to put too many resources into making artillery useful, you could spend those points and buffs on other things that you are going to need desperately (like more bodies on the field, or more leman russes)

For a thematic artillery unit I plan on having a tank commander in a vanquisher modelled with sound ranging an Comms apparatus with 3 Basilisks. This commander would have the veteran tank ace upgrade and therefore the elite sharpshooters doctrine. The detachment would have expert bombardier's and they'd benefit. The commander ordering the Basilisks and counting on forward infantry units to spot would be a lot of fun and an engaging way to have my units work together. I'd probably get tabled though.

Once the IAC units get their keywords changed the artillery carriages are gonna get scary as they are just 120 points and can be taken in units of 3s. It's also a decent chance they might gain platoon too. Since they are all in one unit, orders issued to them is gonna apply to all three guns, and they might be able to get Take Aim, which undoes the arty nerfs. So if you use Expert Bombardiers, Take Aim and a Master of Ordinance you are gonna have, for 360 points, 3 earthshaker cannons hitting on 3s rerolling 1s with their normal AP. That is brutal

I think you can't have the +1 of Expert Bombardiers and the +1 of the Take Aim Order at the same time, because the nerf reduce the BS of the unit. With indirect fire the best you can have is a 4+ roll to hit.

I only have 500points of guard but I do have a unit of Mortars and a Unit of Bombast field guns. The mortar ARE infantry, so they can raise banners on the back objective, they also get alot of chances to get Born Soilders with the auto wounds on 6s, and they are smaller base so they are easier to hide. So right now with a smaller army and Take aim order I perfer them. Especially against the horde of 1W units. However the bombasts do a much better job of taking down bigger units and when I get more officers, and the coveted Master of ordancance the Bombasts are going to be easily better.

Also, the earthsharker cannon battery has the Regeimental keyword and it puts out more damage on average than the new field ordnance batteries.

Im planing to try out wyverns. 1-2 of them. Moving farward with my russes (behind them obviously) being able to clear hordes that gets in their way and take a few pot-shoots at crappy units holding objectives in back of the enemy. And any deapatrike behinde me nees to move through these before they get to my russes. I dont think its realy worth it but Im gona try it a few games

Unfortunately, Commissars can't take attaches. Attaches can only be added to Command Squads, while bodyguards can go with any officers.

So, I'm very new to Guard. Was just wondering if the 9 mortar thing is THE way to bring mortars? I was thinking of going like 8 squads of troops (plus 2 or so Kasrkin) and just adding 1-2 free mortars there to keep my backline safe. Is that valid or would I be better of just going full on Cadian Shock Troopers and adding the 9 mortars? I was kinda feeling the Basilisk or Wyvern, sucks they're worse than I thought heh. Any good artillery list out there for inspiration?

Yea, I don't know man. Master of ordinance giving reroll ones still means 50% of your shots miss flat out, and then 2/3 of your re-rolls still miss, and he costs extra points. Orders don't work on the really impactful artillery like basilisks and manticores that got me interested in the guard in the first place. The FOBs split the difference in the power sense, but I they just don't have the actual firepower that I want to use. And finally, giving up one of my regimental traits just so I can buff 2-4 units in my army back to basic strength sucks. That's assuming I have one of the requisite units close enough to my preferred target too. I get that you CAN make it work, but none of the options seem worth while and the strongest buffs don't apply to the artillery I actually have and want to use.

The advantage of Elite Sharpshooters is it also benefits the army holistically. Basically everyone except Bullgryn and Rough Riders benefit greatly from To Hit rerolls. So that's a buff to your artillery, your tanks, and your infantry, all with one Regimental Doctrine.

Simply add a forward observer for HQ units and Platoon commanders. as long the FO can see the target the arty is shooting the BS is not modified.

I can't help but think some exterminators or Brrrrts racing up the board, pumping rounds down range will not only effectively pin fast moving armies but kill them also.

Excellent points in this video. With some effort you can definitely put your artillery models to good use! However, there's a point to be made that you will be sacrificing a LOT to do so. Following the tips in this video will indeed negate the negatives for artillery, but in exchange for the positives you could give the rest of your army. (Such as Born Soldiers or any number of other regimental trait combos). You'll need to decide how much of your army has to be artillery in order to justify the trade-off

Too bad there’s not a dedicated artillery commander. Guard should really have a specialized commander giving bonuses across the army to represent their chain of command. Maybe bring in a spotter too for a few extra points and bring a new line of sight to the arty

Technically, that's what the Master of Ordinance was. But they decided to make him unfit for purpose in 8th, and now have rolled him into regimental attaches to give him something to do. Maybe if instead they made him an Officer with his own form of Artillery Orders, that would be great.

I'm still not sure. Maybe I might bring my wyvern to harass things but I just don't think it's worth investing compared to tanks right now. I just feel that indirect fire is not worth the orc level of shooting.

Really seems like GW added the nerfs on basilisks so folks would by the new ordinance and heavy weapons crews. We'll see how it plays out.

Hol up friend, Creed can only give 1 unit +1 strength, unless you're giving the other ones something useless (like, not using Take Aim for some reason) Also, taking a command squad with a relic banner next to the mortars is the best way to ignore almost all of the negatives. Also are we not going to talk about Veteran Guerrillas

Arty should carpet half of the board in damage and hits. Arty should be a scary thing to deal with that can annihilate the better part of a Space Marine squad.

Deathstrike doesn't roll to hit and it doesn't allow for armor saves because it does mortal wounds. So it is unaffected by the nerf

@@lemanruss7218 That's how artillery works in real life & used to work in the game in the older editions. This is why fast attack options are important to get rid of their artillery which is already squishy in the game, hell Land Speader Typhoons were great for taking them out, or space wolf scouts. It's not worth 140 pts not even by a long shot, when you can get a Leman Russ tank, which does so much better, for about the same points, & much much less resource investment to make them even remotely viable xD

Rerolling 1s to hit is all good and fun but math wise the average for 1 basilisk is a single unbuffed tactical spacemarine in light cover per turn while maxed out on buffs ... This backline objective is very much safe. That's a 140p model + master of ordinance/mechacommissar, I ask you : who would take that deal over another Russ ?

I bring two basilisks mostly because I need more Leman Russ models. The indirect fire is sometimes nice but I've found they work better shooting direct fire from all the way across the board. They are good for plinking a few wounds off something that survived the Russes or for harrasing things hiding behind cover.

I've been thinking that that could. They might not do all that much indirect but later turns you might be able to direct fire them with PTTD. That gels well with born soldiers, so you wouldn't have to specialise massively. Saying that I'll probably just take a mortar squad.

Seems like they actually want you to specialize in a certain doctrine, not just make big guns an auto-include. I'm excited always excited to give artillery a buff. And yeah, it's a support weapon, very useful for area denial and harassing. You use it to weaken and shake an enemy unit before you advance your elite units, which is pretty much how Artillery works IRL. Watch Band of Brothers Bastone episode. Foxholes did good at protection from anything other than a direct hit, but it fucked them up still in other ways.

We need a video on how to maximize orders. All these videos (which I greatly appreciate, so don’t take this wrong) rely heavily on orders or buffs from voice of command officers. My long beard issue is there seems to be less voice of command options around, or more accurately our options for adding orders on the board cost so much more. How do I get around only one “commandant” key word characters on the board. I’d love a two Castilian (x2 orders each) in my army.

Arty just isn’t worth the squeeze in the new meta. With low bs + no turret weapon, having to give up valuable regimental traits, generally lackluster damage per points, and no squadrons lends arty to seem pretty dead in the water to me especially compared to other builds. The only indirect I could possibly slot in is some mortar squads to clean out backline light infantry (i’d rather have my castellans on the front) and/or a deathstrike to play some devious mindgames 😈

I'm extremely confused about how they are stating that -1 to bs affects the datasheet and isn't a -1 to hit rolls. How is this different from a +1 to strength ability with a x2 strength weapon? Why is one affecting my datasheet and the other isn't? I'm not at all saying they are wrong here I'm just really confused as to why this same type of interaction works differently.

Watched the video. Seems that there's a lot of hoops to jump through to make artillery viable. I don't think Master of artillery is viable and I believe he has made a mistake with his description of Creed. Her +1 strength ability only works on the 1st unit an order is issued to. Therefore you'd have to use this ability 3 separate times and place her within 6 inches of the guns. A bit of a waste of her ability. Maybe used once on the Bombast gun, you'd be wanting to use move move move with her too to get your Death Korps into the middle of the table as ASAP to soak up all that enemy firepower. Personally I'd go with Straken to move forward with Infantry as he's an absolute weapon.

Been playing guard for 25 years now, this new book has me putting them on the shelf. Its a shame, because I was looking forward to building a new army with all the new goodies. That is not gonna happen now, rules changes have prevented me from buying a whole new army, or playing my old one.

In my opinion the new manticore is still just as oppresive as it ever was. Its basically full payload and cheaper than it was. That carried us before the new codex and it just got cheaper and more available. Being able to shoot flat 3 damage across the board regardless of where they are hiding is a tool that cannot be underestimated.

As an Eldar player, IG artillery is actually quite dangerous. Mortar teams are 55 points and can benefit from orders. They really do some decent damage for their cost against light infantry and can be taken in numbers enough to threaten heavy infantry as well with orders and of course the born soldiers trait.

Waste of effort many better units to be buffing or tailoring your list around. I get your bored and want to squeeze some miles out of our artillery. Deathstrike for area denial, Basilisk and Manticore now work like up gunned and under armoured tanks. When used as direct fire they can still have an impact as the second row of vehicles behind your advancing 3xHeavy Flamer Leman Russes. Otherwise our artillery is best used when going to a PUG or fighting a nooby trying to learn.

@@karlnygren While this is true, it's also true that only the last order given applies to each ordered unit if they receive multiple orders. So, if you have Creed next to a 3-squad mortar pit, you can issue the first squad, say, Fix Bayonets, the second one Take Cover, and the third one Take Aim. Then declare that the effect of Take Aim is going to affect the other 2 mortar squads as well through Regimental Tactics. This way, all 3 mortar units have received a direct order from Creed, and therefore get +1 Str to their shooting, and still all benefit from the Take Aim order.

Double check the existing balence dataslate. It specificly states the astra militarum is EXEMPT from this nerf! Page one, lower left corner.
