I'm going to guess you know how difficult it is for the average person to identify one of those X prefix 16 gauge A-5s. My only background was that my WWII veteran dad (Army of Occupation, Japan, which post dates VJ Day) came home with two and gifted one to his father. I always got the impression he may have obtained them from some of his counterparts. Either way, he used it for deer hunting, and he had absolutely no problem taking down a buck with the right load. In fact, the last day of his life on Veteran's Day 1983, he shot a deer and attempted to drag it to his modified army jeep, when he suffered a heart attack and died. That's why I am grateful that there are resources like this youtube video to confirm what I already suspected. It bothers me a little that this info is not available on the Browning website.

Here's my problem: My serial number is HIGHER than 126175, (I don't want to publish it here, but it is between 126175 and 126999), AND, it has NO "X". And, no, it is not a Remington, or an "American" or a Savage. Proof marks, (barrel, receiver, bolt, etc), are all Belgian. I assume it was made in 1940 or later, but this video's table, and every table I have seen elsewhere, STOP at 126175. Mine is 126XXX where XXX is greater than 175. I'd appreciate an explanation if you have one. Post Script: I found a different table that lists "lettre annale" (year letter) proof marks from 1922 through 1997. These date marks appear on the barrel. Of course, barrels can be changed, but when the serial number on the barrel matches the serial number on the receiver, the proof marks on the barrel apply to the receiver as well. In this case, the lettre annale "t" on my shotgun's barrel puts its PROOF DATE at 1941 which is consistent with "after 1940" for serial numbers between 126176 and 126999. You might consider adding the "lettre annale" table to fill the gaps in the tables you post in this video. AND make note of the fact that there are A5 shotguns "out there" with serial numbers higher than 126175 and the start of the "prefixed" serial numbers.

I have a 16 Gauge Short Action in the exact range you mention…1269xx. My grandfather bought it and a 12 Gauge while he was in Europe for WWII. Actually the Sweet 16 was introduced in 1937 and made a few years before the war stopped production. When production started again after the war Sweets were still made but now with the 2 3/4 chamber. Up until the 50s Sweet 16s did not have the scroll lettering on the side, but they always had a gold trigger. There is much history about this gun. Unfortunately too many books and references were published with bad information.

Why is is “not a browning” if it was made in America by a different company. the Remington outsold the browning when it was updated to the 1100 from the M11. Remington built it under brownings licensing, my American made Browning says browning on it and looks feels operates just like my Belgium made one.

According to Browning's web site, the production began in 1903 not 1909 The serial # were sequential from 1 - about 228,000 ending in 1939 when production was turned over to Remington. Production did continue throughout the years of WWII w/ Remington's production of the gun. Much of this video seems to have erroneous information. Although even Browning admits that, "Exact production figures are not available. Year of manufacture on Pre-World War II production is strictly a guess."
