Hi Jordan - this looks like a brilliant upgrade for existing boiler installations. I had a Worcester Bosch Combi-Boiler installed end of 2019 as part of a full central heating install, and so I opted for their 'EasyControl' touchscreen smart controller rather than the conventional thermostatic controller that you will have had pre--Nest. The Easycontrol unit is located in my downstairs lobby and hard wired to the boiler's EMS Bus via a 2 core cabled connection. (Can be wirelessly connected with certain boiler models too, via a plug-in WiFi module). I also chose to add smart TRV's to all my radiators at the same time, which effectively enables each room to be a fully controllable heating zone in conjuction with the Bosch app on my iPhone. In addition, the system has internet enabled weather compensation, which means that the boiler will fire at a lower temperature to maintain the inside pre-set temperature if it's not so cold outside. And like Nest, there's no monthly fees applied to get full functionality of the Bosch app, unlike some other sytems like Tado. So if you do further upgrade your system with smart TRV's, you definately won't regret it. Love your channel btw. You and Cory manage to be professional and entertaining at the same time - not always easy, haha.

I got into the Drayton Wiser system about 2 years ago, installed the full system on my own home on an Intergas Rapid 32 boiler using the Open therm protocol last year the system is amazing and the app is very user friendly I’ve installed 11 TRV’s on my system and planning to use the smart plugs, I didn’t like the fact that other smart thermostats use spyware and potential be hacked the Drayton doesn’t

Hi After the boiler has been connected to the hub (mains and control) - connection to the system devices (TRV’s Wall stats, remote switches etc) is via the hub’s own wireless network.

I replaced a very old analogue timer with this I got the system 1 trv & the thermostat for £70 from amazon warehouse total bargain, took about 10 mins to fit, 30 mins for Drayton to reset their end as it had been previously registered but the CS was amazingly fast. It's been in over a year now running our oil boiler love it, could do with more integration but I really love it. Oh the trv's are the cheapest on the market too

Can recommend the Wiser, had it installed last year and much easier to control the temperature in the house, being able to zone the rooms to run downstairs at a warmer temperature whilst bedrooms in use upstairs can be run cooler and unoccupied rooms kept very cool saving energy and money. IFTTT features for when we're not in the house so it drops the baseline set point. Top tip is you may need Wiser repeater plugs to boost the signal to the smart TRV's on larger properties (or in our case just thicker walls). Our installer also mentioned the wall/table mounted stat isn't necessarily needed if you're running TRVs as they'll call for heat independently of the wall/table mounted stat.

Good system, I had a Nest for 3 years then installed the Wiser system when Covid Struck as I wanted individual room control. I'm running with 7 of their smart TRV's and it works very well, not 100% on the savings but if only heating 1-2 rooms esp during the day must be better than heating the whole house. The Home/Away was better with Nest, though Drayton are working on a better solution, this isn't needed as much now as mostly at home.

How does it perform as a thermostat? A follow up video would be welcomed, ideally giving some comparison data with rival products. Currently running a Hive stat, which is mostly OK but seems a bit dumb compared to my previous Nest Mk2 (e.g. predicting the right time to turn on before a scheduled target temperature is always an hour whereas the Nest used a local weather forecast to tweak this). On other hand, the Nest wasn't great at the simple task of being a thermostat, with a wide hysteresis band that couldn't be adjusted - so the house always moved from feeling too cold to feeling too hot. Does the Drayton suffer from these sort of issues? PS - Assume that it would be a direct swap for the Nest in terms of the programmer socket compatibility.

I currently have the old style Drayton controls, rotary thermostat and a two channel controller and I am seriously thinking about installing these as they are a straight swap as far as I can see. I assume that I need to unwire the rotary or set it to 30 as an override but apart from that, it's all quiet simple.

Ive got tado. had it for 3 and just works brilliantly. House is warm all year long for less cost of when we had the heating come on twice a day. fit set and forget. Also has wider compatibility since it works with HomeKit. This looks just as good on the face of it unless you're into the apple ecosystem :)

I'm looking at swapping out a Google Nest learning thermostat for a Drayton Wiser. The Google Hub has wires on the 230 V AC (Live and Neutral), Heating (Call for heat and Common), Hot Water (Call for heat, Common, and Satisfied) terminals. I am wondering how these would translate to the terminals on the backplate of the Drayton Wiser, as there seem to be took many cables.

Main issue of Drayon Wiser is that the Home Assistant integration isn't offical and has to be installed via HACS. Which means HA updates don't test it and runs the risk of bricking your automations. Which isn't good. The advantage is that it can be run fully local without internet. I toyed with Wiser vs Tapo EU for some time- in the end went for Tapo as that will work via HA's built in Homekit integration. If Drayton got an official HA integration they'd be #1 choice.

I installed my drayton wiser conventional kit 2 for hot water and heating, with smart thermostats in all rooms (5 in total, including the bathroom) on the 3/12/2023. I have several problems 1. I have set different room temperatures as required and at different start and end times. 2. All heating kicks in and starts warming up all rooms as soon as the earliest time set kicks in even though they have different start and finish times. I work shifts, so I don't need my room heated as and when is not in use. 3. When I chose to boost 1 room as needed, all other rooms heating kicks in even though they have different start times and temperature times. 4. Even if I reduce the temperatures to between 10 and 12 degrees to stop rooms from warming up as they're not required, they heat and warm up anyway. These problems do not help with the idea of the drayton smart heating efficiency of the heating system ideas. Eg. I needed to boost only my bedroom at night after work, but the whole heating system kicked in while other people were sleeping, which is not required. These problems have rather caused my bills to increase instead of decreasing for efficiency and cost. I can't boost a single room without all the other heating kicking in. Please help!!! Please, I would appreciate it if you could help rectify all these inefficiency problems.

As an Artisan you should be familiar with the seven 'P's 😉 involves planning such as mounting locations, materials required for the job. What I do find odd is that the current crop of junction boxes such as Wago and Ideal have cord/cable grips yet some programmers, thermostats etc, and they do carry mains voltages , seem to overlook a method of cable entry clamps, some even use spurs without using the flex outlet clamps 😉 and just poke the cable through a knockout, those knockouts on plastic boxes can be pretty sharp. If you were doing an EICR on an installation, you would maybe give that a C3 ? Just a thought. The manufacturers of such equipment have often disregarded cable entry protection over the years. But, who is reposinble for the spur back box entry ?

I would rather have practical cable entry and visible on the face than tucked away on the sides,top and bottom... its all for the sake of asthetics nowadays, most are tucked out of site anyway, lets face it switches and sockets have front screws, ok, some have caps for asthetic purposes.

I have two plumbed in zones with two wired Thermostats - one upstairs and one downstairs. I understand I need the Wiser 3 channel Hub and wire accordingly from the hub to trigger heating in the separate zones. How do you assign the upstairs and downstairs thermostats to the corresponding zones - so the upstairs wireless thermostat operates the upstairs heating and the downstairs thermostat operates the downstairs heating. Seriously, what do these have to do with using a central heating system?! Does it need Wifi to operate? What if your wifi goes down, are you stuck with the temperature it was last on?

The system learns how quickly your home heats up so you can set it to reach the set temperature at 8am for example and it will turn on at 7.30am on a warmer day or earlier on a cold day to be at the correct temperature at the time you want it to be. The address information is useful as it then also knows how cold or warm it is outside and can use that as part of its prior planning, I believe.

Wouldn't your connection of the call for heat to the permanent live and terminal 4 send 240v to the boiler's sensitive PCB? I am attempting the exact same installation and concerned that call for heat on the Nest was just closing a switch, rather than sending voltage.

It depends on your boiler and what sort of switch it uses to call for heat, some are switched live, some are low voltage, check your boilers installation manual to see what yours is. Don't connect up if you aren't sure as yes, you can fry the control PCB.

I have never understood the idea of smart thermostats, I seem to remember some research from some years ago that the most efficient way to space heat was to maintain a constant temperature, rather than allowing the space to cool down and then have to heat it up again. Maybe with more efficient building insulation, this is not the case anymore.

You’re right. My home is well insulated (enough) but if I only heat downstairs then there is a constant draught from hot air going upstairs. The house is far more comfortable if I heat upstairs and downstairs at the same time. My only issue is the two thermostats fighting with each other.

Hive seems to slot in just like this system - the only wiring change needed will be to remove the existing thermostat link, but this looks a bit nicer to me. How are you getting on with it? My client has the old wheel type thermostat on the wall in hallway. It's 2 wires. Line and neutral. Can a smart thermostat be connected to this 2 wire situation? The gadget he wants uses switch lines.. Can it be hacked by using g looplinks?

I had a similar problem where the heating would switch on on a hot day or even when the schedule was off. I have a Hive system which was installed for me by British Gas. However its the mini valves which operate hot water upstairs and downstairs, if one of those sticks partly open when hot water is called for the downstairs heating started. In my experience the motorised valves quite often stick.All the engineers do is to remove the motor part of the valve which sits on top and manually move the valve open and close several times that unsticks the valve which then will work normally again. This problem usually occurs after the summer when the valves have not been called to operate for quite a while.

Quick comment on the erratic behaviour of these wifi installations. This equipment comes with a set of dip switches (usually 5) both on the sender unit and the receiver unit. They have to be the same setting in order to communicate. These switches determine the RF frequency used between the two for communication purposes. They are set to a default at the factory. Typically all off or all on. They have quite a range. Up to 25 meters. If you have two adjacent homes that use the same kit, or even the same RF frequency, that have been installed with the default setting then they can interfere with each other. So what happens is your neighbour's preferences can override yours and vice versa. So you should always change the dip switch settings to something other than the default when installing this equipment. There is a possibility, of course, that by coincidence you might randomly choose the same dip switch settings as your neighbours so if in doubt you should speak to your neighbour and see if you can compare the two with the view to making them different. If you do have this erratic behaviour, and for this reason, the chances are your neighbour is having the same problem. So making sure they are different will help them out too.

Good video on the install (and love your channel 🙂🙂), but I can't help feeling you've missed a trick here in that you're not really leveraging anything "Smart" here. You've just really got yourself an "easier to programme" normal thermostat. The main efficiency gains with a "Smart" setup, is in the intelligence and zoning capabilities. If you install the wiser TRV's on all of your radiators, then you can zone your heating. You can then heat the rooms you occupy, at the times you occupy them, intelligently when you're actually at home. This is what will make it "Smart" and more efficient as you won't be heating bedrooms during the day, and downstairs / occasional rooms when you're in bed: or any of the house, other than to a background level if you're "Out". Simply installing a "Smart thermostat" with a single temperature sensor to shove in 1 room, is merely a digital equivalent of a "Dumb" thermostat setup.

ok heres question for you.....with regard to the changing of the main control unit and hallway thermostat thats easy i simply swap the new drayton control unit onto the universal faceplate and then locate the battery powered thermostat at the old thermostat location....simples. Question: the main unit controls rest of house however i have a livingroom thermostat with controller in there to so that's a 2nd zone, that also going to its own zone valve...what i think i need to do is get a 2nd thermostat so maybe the 3 channel kit, this zone valve is controlled via this unit and doesnt go to the main unit...i guess i need to wire it to the main unit somehow so that the main unit can call for heat for either zone valve? or... i just wire the 2nd zone valve to the 1st and do away with 2 zones its kinda pointless anyway the house is far too busy for the livingroom to be its own zone the door is never closed really....

Wiser seems to be the best one on the market in a few ways. I have Tado at home (luckily the older version so I don't have to pay a subscription for the useful geofencing features) but if my home internet, or Tado's servers, goes down then it becomes purely dumb - no scheduling on the thermostat, all I can do is manual temperature changes on it or manually boost the hot water. I put Wiser in at my parents' and it happily works on its schedule even though their internet is currently down due to an Openreach fault... And if you want to reprogram it you can put it back into setup mode and it will become a wireless AP and let you connect the app to it to change settings. If all is well with the internet, it doesn't do geofencing as well as other solutions (but can work with IfTTT to do that) but having smart TRVs that can call for heat from the boiler is fantastic and a game changer. The only downside with Wiser is that the TRVs don't have many adaptors that come with them for different manufacturers' valves and the adaptors you can buy cost as much as replacing the entire valve on the radiator with a compatible one.

For me, the main drawback of this system is that if you want more than one person controlling the heating using the app, you have to tell them your password. You're only allowed one user per account. This limitation really should be covered in the video.

As part of the planning of the install it pays to setup a new account (we use Google. And it's free) that is specifically for the Wiser app login. That way you don't expose any other services associated with a personal account e.g email. A side benefit is you can use the Wiser specific account for any email about support from Drayton.

hi just a quick question about this product. can it be used with a oil ( kerosene) central heating my boiler outside and the control units inside witch controls the heating and water and the only way we can control the heat is the rad Thomasite if you no wot i mean so will this product work on my heating and witch one wood i need.? ps love the vids and keep up the good work

Yes it works with an oil boiler, controlling 2 zones and hot water is exactly the system we have, Wiser valves on all rads except 2.

I have installed the Wiser thermostat, works great. So I purchased 5 radiator thermostats, sent them back. The temperature readings were not accurate, and they were too noisy when turning on/off.

... and it uses opentherm I was about to buy a tado starter kit, only to realise the UK version doesnt fully use opentherm, it only uses relays, which was specifically designed for the UK market! The EU version fully supports opentherm. My new boiler will be opentherm, but the tado starter kit v3+ wouldnt be able to support it, so... onto the Schneider Drayton Wiser system - looks like a wiser choise Or am I wrong about tado in the UK not supporting opentherm?

Interesting, but it is the options which I would like to know about, there is an OpenTherm module, but can't find advert so no price, and it says the module only works with single channel version, EPH do a master slave option, but no TRV heads, and the big problem seems to be new homes with zones can't use OpenTherm, Zones, and TRV heads, there is no thermostat to fit all.

Honeywell evohome all the way, especially for medium to larger installations (2-3 bedrooms or more) , it will work just with everything even electrical UFH, zone valves etc. It's by far the best on the market in compatibility and versatility. Only downside is it could be smarter and the the software a bit better/modern. For Studio or 1-2 bedroom flats I could recommend something else...

Downside it's very expensive compared to other systems. Another annoying factor is that the RF signal is crap through thick walls . Plus there's a supply issue with the TRV's ( which are nearing £100 each ?! , if you can find them) at the moment so I'm changing to Drayton from the Evohome.

@@jooie444 in certain configurations it can be even cheaper...anyway, for me and some of my clients there was no other option and there've been no supply issues in the past either. Who knows, there might the case drayton or whatever manufacturer will have supply issues next month, you never know at the moment and prices&supply is crazy in general since covid/brexit/Ukraine. Maybe best to wait until things calmed down, if ever

I think a benefit of Drayton is that the backplate can be plug and play compatible with existing installs. I looked at evohome (I want it) and it looked like I’d need to modify the backplate and possibly add a new one for a separate upstairs controller. But I do want the evo home.

I've built my own....got a phone app...it even check's if at home ....if not it doesn't switch the heating on...to save gas!...but I can turn it on if I want e.g... coming home from work...oh and I can ask Alexa on my phone to turn it on..(from my car/phone) Edit:..and not filling out personal data/info...as it works on my raspberry pi at home...not hosted on servers in USA/China..

Problem with turning heating systems off in the home when your out for all day for instance when you turn the heating system back on it uses more gas to heat from a lower temperature so the idea that the home is monitored by the programmer/ thermostat and will turn the heating system on during your time away from the home to a temperature you set which is lower that your desired temperature. Also the Wiser system uses the weather in your area to adjust the heat requirements and times to come on to reach your desired set temperature when you want them to be. The TRV’s can be set to individual temperatures for each room they are in so one room can be 16 another 17 and others at 23 degrees C as you require them to be not all controlled by one room thermostat

@@leebutterworth7465 yes totally agree...but also got to do with heat loss and retention of heat also, within the house so it could fine its equilibrium around the whole house I don't think the house would ever get that cool to use excessive energy if the house is insulated correctly...just my opinion..

How many CH system have I wired over the years , far to many. When you switch a fused spur off for isolation , for safety sake remove the fuse. Does it matter about pattress screw now accessories are coming with plastic screw covers
