The interviewer doesn't seem to realize that Soul Asylum were among the godfathers of the grunge-era. During (and before) the "hairband era" where bands were wearing spandex - these guys were wearing ratty t-shirts, torn jeans and dirty sneakers. Check out anything from the "Hang Time" album or earlier, it has elements of punk, rock and what would come to be known as grunge.
@Hallucination7 жыл бұрын
They were not god fathers of the grunge era. That's simply a fan boy's perspective to elevate the importance of the band. Soul Asylum were never "grunge" they were never part of that Seattle sound that became known as "grunge". Soul Asylum was more along the lines of folk punk rock from day one. The Hang Time album has nothing to do with so called grunge. It's a straight up punk rock album. Soul Asylum don't need to be elevated on the back of "grunge". They weren't part of it let alone god fathers of it.

Opinions are fun, aren't they? Who do you think influenced the "grunge" bands? I would say Punk, and Rock. The "grunge"-movment was more than just about the style of music, it was the unpolished, garageband-to-the-stage attitude. Just because a band wasn't from Seattle doesn't mean they didn't play a part in influencing the Seattle bands.

Brian Premo Well said... Don't you just love jackass purists who cannot see outside their little box of history! They honestly think grunge happened out of a bubble and over night. Lmao. For every great band who actually makes it, there's a ton of others struggling to make it who have their own unique style and sound. I know of tons of great bands that never saw the light of day way back before grunge blew up and deserve just as much credit. Thank god Dave is still around. If it weren't for bands like Soul Asylum, Husker Du and The Replacements there may not here even been a "Grunge" scene in the first place. At least not the way we experienced it. Kurt himself not only grew up listening to these bands, but shared the stage with many like the Meat Puppets and Sonic Youth. If you weren't there, don't talk shit. Peace

@Viva La Vivas I would have to agree. There already was an alternative scene in the 80s: "college charts" as they called them, and Rolling Stone used to list the rankings in the back, right beside billboard. So bands out of the conventional mainstream at the time were already there in the early 80s: REM, U2, the Cure. I use these as an example because they were the few that actually graduated to the "big leagues" before Nirvana broke. But they needed radio and MTV help to get there; it didnt hapen overnight. They also had to meet halfway: the above listed bands had to utilize better production to get there. Not every band had that option, especially on an independent label.

He does not give a shit about the bullshite that goes with his profession. Its a shame Dan retired however, Dave has grown as a musician. Adding Funk, Soul and Gospel influences...to the mix of Punk, Country and Heartland Rock. I know he is good friends with Greg Dulli, another musician who just does his thang

It's mostly the mic. It is called a lavalier and clips on your shirt by your throat. The closer the mic is to the source the more bass it has, it is called proximity effect. It is picking up his voice from his chest and throat where the sound is originating, which is acting like a bass bin. - Audio technician
