Cloaks are a great starting project for designing cloth in Blender, they get you to think about folds and how they will flow.
This video looks at some of the basic of setting up a cloak and compares some different choices in the modelling process.

Now i can see how usefull latice modifier can be. I had really hard time modeling subdevided or remeshed surface due to so many small faces. So with latice modifier we can do all the things we normally do with mesh? Like extrude, intrude, bevel? BTW could we do 3d print check in video at those capes once they are done?
@ArtisansofVaul

I've done them and they are both 3D printable/manifold. I'll try to remember to do that in the future on video to show the results 👍🏻

Nice tutorial, thanks. Have you thought about using a procedural node (noise, Musgrave etc) for deformation in combination with a gradient vertex weight group. Then, sculpt to tweak and finalise.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea. My geometry node knowledge is definitely a work in progress to be fair. Have you seen any example? I'm not sure I've seen anything that would make an accurate/realistic ripple effect.
@TheoPantazi
@TheoPantazi Жыл бұрын
@@ArtisansofVaul Mine too! Haha I don't think you need GNodes, just the usual texture nodes and maybe a modifier or two, and an empty for the texture coordinates for the displacement. Use the Mapping shader node to stretch out the noise shader, say, and viola a cloak cloth effect.

@@ArtisansofVaul I'll see if I can recreate it with that principle in mind. I have a YT channel called Beyond Blender (hardly any subs but hey ho). I'll see if I can put a recording of the result and add the link there and share it.

What would be your way of creating chainmail on a character for 3d printing? Some sort of texture with displacement or some special brush?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
That's tough. I'd probably go with displacement bur you'd have to find a good alpha texture. You can make chainmail using an array and then deform it with a lattice but it isn't really suitable for 3D printing as it will be hell to cleanup and produces objects that are generally too thin to print well.

I have miss so many videos. BUT NO MORE. RING THAT BELL! Btw Artisan, do you think it would be interesting to do some fire/smoke ? I bet they can get procedural and could be an interesting video. It could be interesting for flamers, or for destroyed markers, or maybe for some tyranid /nurgle things like spore clouds (or even gloomspite)
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
👍🏻😁 So I did a video on sculpting fire but it didn't get that many views so I left off sculpting smoke. It isn't procedural though so I'd be curious to know if there was a good way to do that which would produce a solid object. One question, when you start manipulating the lettice, you press s to scale, but then a circle also appears that you can use to modify the "range" or how many nodes away is affected that you resize. How do you get that circle to appear and resize it? The keypresses does not show this.

19:05 20:22 draw brush for adding folds in sculpting type of way 20:44 but messes w thickness, maybe can try making the mesh just flat no thickness 3:22 not sure why he adds thickness in the first palce, maybe for a purpose of cloth in 3d space its better, but for my needs maybe can get away without it 22:22 ctrl = negative 23:30 F = make brush size 22:38 draw brush now doesnt change thicknesss....why (before it was thinning it, so maybe it can do drawing out perfectly fine, but the opposite motion eeffects thickness) 25:00 sharp tool 25:22 when gets pixelated Shift R to remesh 26:33 can see how much vertices/faces

How would you do cloaks with writing and icons on it?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 ай бұрын
So there are several options depending how curving the cloak is. The first is you can wrap it to it, I have that towards the end of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYKagJVjoL9lf8Usi=5HFO0w6R64HduSFJ The method I would use for the best/most reliable result would be to use Flowify, it's a paid addon but totally worth it for things like this. This video covers using it on a flag: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpy3o2pnaLR6a68

Could you do something like this but for a banner? But specifically a banner that has details for easy painting? Like some newer flag models that have the flag design pre sculpted so when you paint you just follow the lines if that makes sense?

ok considering how old this video is i doubt ill get help but for some reason as soon as i add the latice modifier to the plain i physicly cant edit the latice anymore none of the dots exist i just cant do anything and it does this every time can anyone help update: i had to go into object mode click on the latice and than go into edit to see the dots however it still doesnt seem to work because certan dots wont move the plane and other ones move the entire plane so i have zero control over how it looks let alone the ability to make a cloth texture so either my blender is stupid or theres a step missing im guessing the former because it always seems to do random noncence on its own

@ArtisansofVaul ok so blender is just making up random issues on the spot because after i made a brand new one i messed with the scaling like you said and now whenever i add the lattice object to the lattice modifier that is connected to the plain and the plain grows?! it still hasnt fixed the dots either some work at extremes and others dont do anything at all so im just confused do you have a way for me to send you a video or screenshare because im not sure if describing it really helps

As explained at 4:05 this is using an addon called HardOps. Its an amazing add on for modelling but it is a bit on the pricey side if you are getting started and you don't know if you want to invest in it. If you do theres a link to it here: blendermarket.com/products/hard-ops--boxcutter-ultimate-bundle/?ref=834 Alternatively you can see how to set up a lattice without HardOps here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmHTlWmprqqhgKM Hope that helps.

Please work on making your instructions more clear. For example I have no idea how you did that step in 1:27. When I click Ctrl + R and point it on the surface, only one line appears instead of two.

This is not really a beginner tutorial and that is a VERY basic operation. For example I don't explain how to navigate/pan in tutorials, if I did all the tutorials would be prohibitively long. So you know when adding an edge loop (that's what ctrl + R does) you can scroll up on the mouse wheel to increase the amount of edge loops.
