I think you'd love the AK True Metal range of "wax" metallics. They work just like oils, are thinned with mineral spirits and work incredibly well with other oils and enamels. They're soooo good for drybrushing metallics and you can get amazing blends. Would love to see your take on them.

Your drybrush techniques helped me greatly with my Dreadknight. I never thought to drybrush over a wash, but the results are perfect. I was trying desperately to get the Grey Knights blue shading with just Drakenhof Nightshade overtop of Iron Hands Silver, and it was WAY too loud. Had I drybrushed over my old models, it might have fixed my problem. I keep trying to replicate Tabletop Ready's Grey Knights - I love his aesthetic. Your technique helped get me there.

@@darrenj3720have you tried using a pen rather than a brush? Obviously it's easier as it's more natural to us. Many people use these specific pens that have tiny nibs and archive ink (apparently archive ink doesn't fade over time). If you are interested I could look up the name on mine. Other benefits of the pens is that you can get black and sepia ones, and it doesn't reactivate and run if varnished, unlike regular ink. Great for control doing eyes too.

I think what you are reading as vertigris on the armour is actually the blue glow of magic as well. Vertigris wouldn't form like that on the mount's armour - especially without a whole lot more rust on the steel/silver looking bits. That's why they have the same blue for the glowing bits. :) That said, another great video of this type!

Honestly after looking at the two side by side at 50:53 I honestly prefer yours to theirs even if the gold horse armor isn't as orange as the boxart, I like everything else more. I screwed up my first Eternus by gluing him all together. After watching a couple videos of him, including yours, I can see he's definitely meant to be subassemblied. Guess I'll just use him for practice where I can in trying this method.

Back with another questions since my last one. Do you think paints to could benefit either from adding drying retarder and/or flow improver, either directly into the paint or a bit in to the bristles of the brush? I wonder if this could help the paint go off smoother.

I will start drybrushing very soon. But what i had to ask. After a session u have to clean your pallet right? Some creators build a pallet out of old plastic pieces or so. I thought that would be very hard to clean up. but if you dont do that then the pigments are still there right and you will eventually reactivate them in the next session. Also if you use very light colors that could be a problem or isnt it if the old paint is totaly dry?

Even pro painters who have won competitions will say that GW boxart style is almost unnecessarily detailed and clean - award winning pieces aren't painted to the same standard. It's all for GW's high res, up close photography. Results such as in this video aren't just hobby hacks or "good enough" - this IS professional level results which is far more achievable than folks have been led to believe. (Thanks to how publicized the 'Eavy Metal" paint style is.)

@ArtisOpus

It being full of paint doesn't matter (there's no negatives). I like the 'fresh start' of black though, it lets me test colours on the same prime I use on my minis, and gives eyes an easy focus on the mini :). I definitely recommend priming at the beginning, what you do from there is personal preference though, asides from wiping off any dust, nothing is 100% necessary

Can anyone help me with a tine stamp for when he puts the white into weapons runes before adding the pink?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 10 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, it was just white diluted with water and carefully 'dropped' in with a small brush (Series S 00), nothing to worry about, it can be repeated if needed.

I have a question regarding paints: can I use Citadel? and why don't you use Citadel in your painting videos?
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus Ай бұрын
You can absolutely use citadel, I use them all the time! They're probably my most used range, and are generally great for dry brushing due to not being ultra matte

@@ArtisOpus thanks for replying. Though your techniques are light years ahead of my level right now (I just started painting mini this month), I still find your videos immensely helpful. Maybe in the future I can apply what I learn from you to my minis .

Are there any special considerations if using inks instead of paints for dry brushing? Specifically want to try this for white
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 10 ай бұрын
It'd only really work for stippling probably, but IMO you're better using a carefully diluted potent white acryllic, some inks have odd properties.

@@ArtisOpusThanks for the reply! I've been using inks to mix highlights/shades from base colors to minimize the impulse to buy every color under the sun so i was wondering if the inks could be usable for dry brushing. Appreciate your videos, they're super helpful and encourage me to a lot.

Should there be any concern about metallics contaminating the dampening pad for when you're not using metallics on the same miniature or should I keep a pad separate for metallics? I'm probably overthinking it as usual,haha. Cheers
@ArtisOpus
@ArtisOpus 12 күн бұрын
This is one of the few situations where it may actually matter worrying about contamination (if you're doing a lot of heavy metallics including basecoating, etc) - there's a fairly easy fix though, which is to take your dampening pad out after the metallics finish (to dry a little), and then just flip it over when you go to the non-metallics. In that time it should have mostly air dried, and you should be safe. No harm having another one, though, just ensure you don't leave alternates out in the air, because they might get dusty, which is generally a much bigger problem than contamination! Good question :)

Curious if there is any concerns with the metalic paints degrading the dry brushes iv heard to avoid using metalics with nice brushes as they can be quite rough on brushes so iv been avoiding using metalics with my series D but after watching this I have a feeling that isn't a concern

Do you only do Warhammer/Warhammer 40K miniatures? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see your expert skills applied to something like BattleTech mechs or Dragons from Reaper. Your work is stunning, and seeing it applied to non-GW figures will help showcase it better.

We've done some SWL in the past, I love their vehicles, and may well return to some again. We're always trying to reach the most people with our techniques, so it's about what mini is going to showcase that technique, the best, and to the widest audience. We do have some upcoming plans, and terrain too, which I feel is completely underused, and underrated in general, GW or no :)

This particular video isn't really aimed at new painters. Lots of more advanced things used and discussed. I would highly recommend you check out his earliest videos. Drybrushing is such a strong, effective technique so it's perfect for beginners, and will last and grow as your skills grow. Also I would strongly advise anyone to learn this way of drybrushing as it differs from the way others such as GW teach it. The results you will get are a world above if you use his methods.
