I've been going to cons (all types) in the NYC/DMV areas and California for more than a decade and I've been a helper very often since 2017, I have never seen an attendee try to do an artist trade (where it was someone else's art for a vendor's stuff). That's genuinely bizarre in a ludicrous but funny way? Like I've seen a vendor OFFER to trade for an attendee's own print that they brought to show them or for like merch the vendor wants but what you described is so weirdly forward.

I unfortunately have heard of it happening a couple of times towards my artist friends at cons in the past. It's not so common in the majority of cons we all go to, but there's always a chance of it happening to any of us and the best we can do is to just decline the trade offer. It's definitely bizarre indeed 😅

It was honestly quite relieving to hear another vendor talking about their experience with LARPers. I certainly appreciate others trying to make the con experience more immersive, but it starts to cross they like when their quests start interfering with the people who lie extra to make money. Plus it’s not the most pleasant experience when they chose to shout at the top of their lungs when giving a quest 🫠. Granted tho, I love the LARPers who give quests like “take a photo with an artist selling [x]”, def appreciate the publicity

I agree! I don't normally see them that often at cons, especially at comic cons where I think they would fit best! There are some ups and downs with them for sure, but overall I feel that there just needs to be a dedicated space for them and not have most, if not all, of them around the vendors room/artist alley, unless the quests are specific for that area.

I wish conventions would get rid of early access for VIPs. Where I live, there is a con that has early entry at 8:30 am. All exhibitors and vendors have to be ready and almost no visitors come in, because it's way too early. Every vendor hast to be there for 12+ hours...

I love the concept of trades, but over the years I've seen people who looked uncomfortable trading with me and I've been pressured and uncomfortable with trading with others. I rather trade around the same $20 around the Artist Alley. If I love something I rather give them $ as it still costs money to make things. Attendees wanting to trade has been a recent problem for me too. I start with "Oh where's your table?" If they say they don't have one "Oh I'm sorry, I only trade with other artists selling here."

My first instinct would be to buy from the artist instead of trading! But I wouldn't mind trading with other artists if I have enough inventory for it. That's a great quote I might use in the future btw! I love that 😁💖

Ohhh the trading thing from attendees has been happening more often now I noticed… I am not too comfortable with it mostly… but the only good thing that happened for me was I got a grade 6 1999 shadowless Abra Pokémon card from it 🤣 I think after that was a pretty fair trade 😂

Thank you!!💖 I feel incredibly bad for her and she didn’t deserve this. This situation doesn’t happen at every con, though. I guess this was a special case where they thought they could squeeze one more vendor in to fill space, but of course there are other ways to add people last minute like that!

I've had attendees try to pull the art trade switcharoo on me before. I was very confused but my natural instinct was to say "No." if I don't understand. Then they got all nasty and rude. I love trading with other artists on Sunday though, I always look forward to that!

Thanks for always sharing your experiences, they're super insightful and inspiring. I was generally feeling down for not performing so hot at my last few conventions, but I honestly feel that it's a combination of many things that are just out of our control. >_

There are soooo many things that happen beyond our control and that's the thing, we can't do anything about it no matter what 😭 this is primarily why I want to try and focus on expanding myself on social media, and I definitely encourage others to do the same!

Does anyone have a list of Comic Cons that cater to everyone in Fl.? I do fantasy, some fan art, some cartoon type of stuff, some comic fan art but I am not an OFFICIALLY comic artist. Do you know which cons in Florida is good for artist like me. The one in Deland and Daytona said they are no longer accepting just regular old artist. Guess the economy is driving folks to have ALL comic book cons or something, Suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Exactly!! I understand to some extent if the attendees were also artists (but they weren’t tabling) and they wanted to trade something they made, but I saw that they were trading one of my mini prints with another artist so I knew that wasn’t the case 😭

I’m sure they were and I’m not fully doubting it! I understand it’s normal for artists to trade at cons, even when either artist isn’t tabling. I just found this one skeptical because sometime after they traded the keychain with my mini prints, they traded one of my mini prints with a different artist, so I can tell they weren’t even trading items of their own, at least in that interaction 😖
