In the classroom we have long used diagram labels and keywords to analyse imagery. In recent years I’ve modified my technique to encourage pupils to do this with a less structured system.
Essentially we select an image to analyse, it could be a source photo or an artists work. We are likely to have wider research which adds to our thoughts and may be noted on the sheet. I apply a tracing paper over the image and in fine liner make sketched observations and notes directly over the area of the work where it is relevant.
It is helpful to then list your findings- as you would in a science experiment. Pupils understand this and generally are familiar with this format.
Then you take your findings and consider how you will apply them to your practical work.
