Stop saying "I _wish_ I could do it" You *CAN* do it You *WILL* do it The more you keep on wishing that you're art style could be a certain way, the more you're going to start hating your art style, then changing it to make it look more similar/better but it just gets Worse and worse and *worse* and _worse_ You're own style may be garbage...... *TO YOU* Maybe other people don't see it that way, actually *try* to make your art style good. If you know its gonna turn out bad, keep going, because mistakes is what makes you get better. It's not talent. All it takes is tray of effort and a sprinkle of faith. TL;DR: Don't give up on your art just because you think someone else's is better than yours

Style is something beginners overthink a lot, I used to be guilty of this as well, but I've come to realize these few things. #1: No matter what style you want to eventually draw in, aiming for the highest level of realism you can get when you're starting out and while you're learning is going to serve you extremely well (in other words, real first, stylize next) I think the perfect balance is to aim for semirealism paintings because while you try to get things to look as real as you can, you don't overdo it, and because it's "semi" real just drawing in this way, aiming for it in and of itself will encourage you to develop your own style whether you realize it or not. In short, work to the highest level of realism you can achieve, then downscale, that downscale will become your style. (By downscale what I really mean is simplify), doing this will also make the drawing of simpler styles so much much more easier, because you already know how to do it better. #2: Style isn't this mystical element people seem to think it is, what style truly is (unless you're an abstract painter, that's a different scene) is not how you draw, it's how you simplify the things you draw. This is why the most stylized drawings we tend to see are cartoon drawings and comic book drawings, the reason for this is because these are industrial drawings where there are deadlines and speed is of the essence, these artists try to get the highest amount of quality they can into the little space of deadline time they have, that is how style begins. Back in the old days everyone just did realist paintings, there was no urgency for simplification, so there was no need for style. Art wasn't a creative process until in very recent years (like the past two centuries) and creative art was extremely rare until then, art was what cameras are today. As cameras came into being, art had to evolve, and oh boy it has. #3: Your very own personal style is a happy accident. You don't develop it, either in the process of trying to draw something as realistic as you can, or in the process of trying to simplify something in the best way that you can one of two things are gonna happen from time to time. You are either going to experiment, try many ways to simplify one object, pick the one that looks best to you, that resonates with you, and that is now part of your style... or you make a mistake, and that mistake happens to look very good, so you leave it in on purpose instead of fixing it, then you draw again and remember that mistake you made, and either you liked it so much that you want to replicate it, or you didn't so you just forget about it. This is how style develops, it's this fluid unreachable thing that... the less you think about it, the more naturally it's just gonna come to you. Style can't happen on purpose for a beginner, for a beginner your style will develop from you simply trying to do your best all the time. For an advanced artist, someone who already knows how to draw very well, very realistic, style will develop from him trying to simplify that realism, this is for example how we got cel shading, someone decided that it was a hassle to do all these values and all those color variations and gradients that happen in paintings and in life... So they simplified it to just one shade color, and one midtone color, many artists will actually leave it at that, but some will also have a one highlight color, this can be one color per image or one color per object, depends on the artist, and these are the sort of things that define style. Don't think about style, don't think about your style, don't think about other peoples styles, just try to do your utmost best, try to go as real as you can, and once you feel satisfied with the level of realism, then either stick with that, or simplify, when that moment comes, then you can start thinking about style because that is when you are first ready to develop it. The less you simplify the more real what you draw will look, the more you simplify the more stylized it will look, for example compare anime to the simpsons, which looks more stylized to you? Simpsons clearly, because anime still has a strong trace of realist drawings in it, the goal of those who developed that style was to make things remain as real as possible while making it as easy to draw as possilbe finding that perfect balance between real and simplified, and along the way make it look as pretty as possible (all the beautiful girls and the pretty boys right?), for the simpsons' artist (matt groening right?) he had another goal in mind when he developed his own style. Both had one thing in common and that was time limited development; they had to be able to do it and do it fast. When you're doing something like animations, at least the way they are done today, you can't draw at your peak skill level, because that takes you too long, you need to draw every frame; 24 frames per second; 1440 frames per minute; 29000~ frames per episode. You can get away with all sorts of tricks to shrink these numbers but these are the numbers for all decent 20~ minute animations. On a weekly release schedule like say anime, that's 29000 frames per week the saving grace here is that not every frame is greatly varied, you have a setting in a background, and you animate the characters within that setting, there are tons of shortcuts to speed this up, you can re-use old frames a lot, but there will always be times when you need to draw something in and draw it frame-by-frame. Of course you need to be able to do it super bloody fast, like lightning, you need to be able to puke a background on a canvas in around ~10 minutes, bam, you need to be able to draw characters from various angles in 5-15 minutes, you need to be able to re-draw parts of the character (like their moving arms or legs or even head) in just 2-5 minutes, and maybe you'll get 5 minutes worth of animation per day, depending on how many shortcuts you use maybe even more, but for every shortcut you use the quality of your work is going to be chipped down a little. The main part of the simpsons was not the art or art style, it was the characters and the per-episode stories, the comedic value, so to have more time to focus on that I imagine matt groening chopped down the levels of quality in his drawings quite substantially, the need arose to do so. But you might not be an animator, and not want to be an animator, you might just want to draw really good individual artworks, if so then I don't see why you wouldn't go for a more realistic style, you might however want to be a comic book artist and then you are faced with a very similar situation as the animator, but you have a bit more breathing room (however comic book creation is no joke either, it sounds easier than animation, but is it really? there are not as many shortcuts you can use like with animation, especially if you're doing the good old fashioned way on paper) Don't think about style, just do your best, and when the time comes that you know that in the near future you will be facing some deadlines, then it's time to put your hands together and decide not "how will I make my style" but "how will I simplify my drawings so that I can make them on time?" You can either be hired to do a job like being a concept artist, or you could have this project you've been planning out, and you want to make something like a weekly comic, well, that would be part of your preparation phase. That is how your style will naturally come to you, and the more you know, the more advanced you can make your style which is why it's always best to start out aiming for realism, by drawing realistically you cannot avoid learning how we see things, what we see, and how light works, light being the absolutely one thing you need to fully understand to be able to draw. (Look around you, all you see is light, there is nothing but light, and objects are not "lit" no, light is reflected off the surface off these objects into your retina which is how you see them, the light of this object is shining on your eye, that's how you see the object. this is why when you look at an object, if you move your head just a little bit... up, down, left or right, you will see it in a different light setting, the highlights will move, even the shadows and midtones will shift a little, it's not that the light source is changing, it's just your eye's placement) Dunno why I wrote all this, but yeah. Thinking about developing our own style while we're beginners is just a trick your mind plays on you to get you to avoid doing actual work, it plays these games to get you to "think" rather than "act", because it is going to take every opportunity it gets to prevent you from doing work, and get you to relax, or chill out, it wants you to watch t.v. wants you to eat, wants you to play video games, wants to have fun.... once things start to matter to you like art, even if they're fun, they become work, they're important, you don't want to fail, now your mind is too stressed out to do it the way you used to, so it leads you off into tangents to avoid doing the thing that could go wrong. (Which is exactly what's happening to me right now, I should be drawing, but to draw I need to sketch, sketching I'm not very good at, so many things can go wrong... except they can't, and I know they can't, but subconsciously I'm afraid that I'm wrong, so I get lead into the tangent of writing this load of crap).
@cestarianinhabitant58988 жыл бұрын
AwesomeSteph0928 You say that you don't know what to draw, but I imagine you're bad like me... so there must be this huge mountain of things that you really wish you could draw but know you can't right? Well when you don't know what to draw, pick one of the things from that mountain, and if you really really can't pick anything, just fall back to the absolute basics and draw a cube, cylinder and or sphere and see where that all leads. You won't find style while trying to learn to draw objects, you will only find it after you know how to draw them and are thinking about how to simplify these drawings of these things in some way. Anyone can follow a drawing tutorial that shows you how to sketch something step by step. But look at like ctrlpaint.com or proko, can you follow these step by steps? Technically yes, but really? probably no. And unless you approach learning to in the right way you never will (the right way to learn is way beyond the scope of style though)

This is the best video I've seen on developing your own style. Some KZbinrs upload a video about the topic and it's as if they don't really want you to learn what it is because they're afraid you might copy them or that your art will be better. Umm . . . if folks are watching a vid entitled how to develop/find your own art style, chances are they are tired of or don't want to copy. I really like that you pointed out that most people who have been drawing for awhile already have their own style and own aesthetic to begin with. It's like the characters in Wizard of Oz finally meeting the Wizard and finding out that they had what they needed to make them happy and successful all along. It's a matter of developing what you've already got.

I'm seventeen now, and my "likes" on drawing and creating "characters" just came last year. I come from Vietnam where people focus on "papers", "certificates" and more than a thing called passion. At my age now, my friends are studying freakingly just to get to universities (being called that but low quality). But to me, I was just wandering through all those and focus on nothing. Just when I'm inspired by something cool from comics. Your videos now are my guide, my preferences for my future aims. I just want to do things like you - not to be a doctor, an engineer or any of other "impressive" jobs that people in my country do. Thank you so much for inspiring me so that I find the right way. Thank you so much!! :)

I sorta draw a western anime style. The eyes are sharp, noses square and skin is practically made out of plastic. It's very colourful too. I make sure the eye-whites aren't perfectly white (it typically has a yellow or green tinge). This is because I like to think they have unhealthy and have liver problems. They have a wide variety of facial expressions this is since I watched a lot of ren and stimpy as a kid and I think us humans are very flexible in the face. Drawing skinny or muscular bodies is a bit tough for me. Especially with guys. Drawing curvey girls is so easier. Basically everyone is a little overweight or beefy compared to the superficial anime standards 😂

I feel like my 'style' is a bit too... Dynamic. Lots of things change: - The arms can be either semi-cartoony or wibbly woos - Hands can have four or five fingers - Hair can be relatively normal or complete insanity - Eyes can be one of three things: Soulless white circles, somewhat normal-ish and "think sonic the hedgehog eyes" You there! Yes you, person that was so bored that they read my comment! Tell me how your style can change subtly between different drawings.
@lr78457 жыл бұрын
I have a problem with consistency when drawing faces, mostly eyes. I always change the shape or size or something, and it annoys me but I don't know how to make a full spectrum of facial expressions in the same style.
@jenniev73457 жыл бұрын
This is how I think of it, everybody looks different right? Doesn't this mean that your drawings have the liberty to be different every time? Don't be discouraged if you are trying to recreate a fav piece of yours and it doesn't come out. I know for me, my style toggles between cute cartoony, and hyper realistic (still working on color in the realism). Sometimes I can't do one and sometimes I can't do the other. For a long time I was really discouraged that I didn't see that I had a style. My friend and a super cute style that she has developed and can always do. I love it and for a while tried too hard to copy it. But it's not my style :/ Anyway! Don't be discouraged if you see two of your pictures and think "wow the nose is awesome and detailed there!" Then on the other picture. "I don't even have a nose..." We are all developing and growing. And this doesn't mean you have to be STRICT in your artwork. I hope this helped! Good luck!

I have a problem, I want to use one style but I also want to use the other. Then I look at other artists and go "oh! That looks cool!" Then try to adapt to something more like that, but I still have the other style, and I get confused on which I should follow, and I get lost on what I want to do and change my style every time I draw something, and I want to settle. I don't know what to do, because I can't make a decision.
@Funkermonsterco8 жыл бұрын
You probably might not agree with this, but I think I'd recommend to worry less about style and focus on improving your fundamentals if its gotten to a point where you're feeling lost, maybe draw from life every now and then. Style by itself won't make your art impressive if it still suffers from poor anatomy, perspectives, etc, and the only way to get these is through years of dedicated practice. Style simply can't be forced, and so its best not to hunt for it imo. I also don't recommend taking too much from other artistst: you can end up copying their errors and imperfections without knowing it, and if done too much it could potentially come off as uncreative. It's perfectly ok to take inspiration from others but don't adapt to/copy them outright. Instead, think of why their purpose and motives of why they drew it like that, the motive of it. If you admire an artist's style, they probably first learned reality's foundations and then afterwards tweaked it while being true to themselves. That's all style really is, simplifying reality in a way that interprets your imagination of the world. Just keep working to improve your fundamentals and remember the purpose of each drawing you make: the things you like, why you like them, and what they say to you. As long as you have the basics down, your style will slowly unearth itself overtime and become inter-changeable once you've mastered the foundations. Good luck.
