As a teacher, I address all of it- because I REFUSE to allow anything that may be how someone identifies themselves or their culture as negative. Whether that is the use of “gay” as a perjorative term or making fun of Asian culture/language, etc. I immediately shut that mess down. Each person has the right to be respected for who they are, and so much of it stems from willful ignorance. It may not help much, but I refuse to turn a blind eye because it’s “easier”

I think I’m lucky that I grew up in a part of Canada where there’s a pretty diverse population, where racism is not as extreme but it certainly exists, just in more subtle ways. I feel like growing up as a Chinese (Hong Kong) Canadian, we’re stuck between the values we’re taught at home (stay quiet, be polite, be patient) and when people are showing racist behaviours, a lot of us just brush it off in the past and try not to engage because we’re taught that’s what a “good person” is. i haven't really had firsthand experiences with ppl being racist towards me (an asian girl) as far as i can remember, but i have witnessed times when the guys at my high school mocked asian people and made fun of us (saying shit like "ching chang chong" and pulling back their eyes) AND to add on to that, they use slurs and are also sometimes joke about things "looking gay" and "being gay" as if it's a bad thing AND as if being gay is the only sexuality in the lgbtqia+ community. it really pisses me off and ik that because i'm a girl and also not their friend they will never take me seriously. it's so fucking hard dude, and it's so frustrating that this is a problem. it shouldn't be. and i've heard about times when one of my white ex-friends fetishized minority races and would say things like "ohhh i hate being white i wish i wasn't white." which is SO DUMB because i envy the privilege of majorities so much that it's honestly offensive that anyone would be ungrateful for having that. i'm so sorry everyone for if you've ever had experiences with racism, and i hope my story hasn't burdened you in any way because the last hint i want is to make things harder for anyone. please stay safe!! 💕💕

I love that you are talking about race and your experiences. I truly think that is the only way people will start getting it and trying to make a change. There are plenty of outright racists, but there are even more low key (unaware?) ones that need to be shown the error of systemic racism. Talking like this is key to learning and doing better. A good example of this is the current race issues with the Royal family playing out right now. Like Paloma, I'm a Mexican living in Texas (Austin) and the weight of the struggle is all too real for me as well. We too have been taught to keep our head down and ignore it. Things are getting much better with the newer generations, but it's still a deeply ingrained habit for my generation (I'm 43) and that of our parents. I'm helping care for my father after an accident he had about a year ago and I've seen more and more how HE has been treated by people he'd otherwise called "friends." His age group specifically is rife with racism yet would never consider themselves racist because they are "friends" with him. Bubbles are a bitch. Much love to you sister, you are doing great!

Thank you so much for this video, and for feeling that it's okay to talk about racism - it is painful to recognise that in 2021 people still have so much bias and inability to connect with others, but openly talking about it might be the way. Also, when you said you weren't perfect in communication, I had to stop the video to write this: you are -the- perfect communicator. You felt racism and had to deal with it, and your experiences are valid and important. I am so sorry for what you and your family had to endure, but no one can take away your hardwork, your strength, and the fact that you matter. (I don't know your parents or their path, but I've always looked up to people strong enough to move to a different country and build their entire lives with very little support, having to adjust to a different culture, language, and environment - often lacking a support group, such as family and friends. So... lots and lots of love to all of you, but especially to them.)

I'm white, my boyfriend is Korean but he was brought here when he was a baby. We've gone to a large mall together that I rarely go to because it's so expensive. We looked like a couple, same height, my arm either wrapped around his or holding hands, constantly together. The number of looks we got was unsettling. I can't say it's because of racism, but it sure as hell seemed like it. I feel like people still have prejudices against mixed-race couples and it's so incredibly frustrating. It's racist to both people because it means they don't think they should be together strictly based on race. I believed the looks were prejudiced because they looked either disgusted/confused/upset (not like super sad or angry just generally upset by the situation). It just makes my heart sink because we both have insecurities about not being good enough for the other person, so when we get stares, it tends to make us overthink. Just don't stare please. It can really give off the wrong message. Especially if you keep staring after making eye contact, laugh after staring, or talk/whisper to someone you're with after staring. I might just be sensitive, but it's honestly just rude. (if you stare off into the distance a lot, it's okay, a few looks here and there aren't bad, I find myself accidentally staring at people sometimes too because I just space out)

Thank you so much for sharing! I honestly sometimes feel this way too, I feel naked when walking around in grocery stores and having people look at me. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just noticing them because I'm feeling insecure or if they are actually staring at me. But yeah, I'm sorry you both have to go through that :( Sending love!

Beautiful and empowering sentiment Tiffany! It’s a hard topic to talk about but the more we do it - the easier it becomes to combat racism and white supremacy that feeds into it. I’m Puerto Rican and Mexican American and it’s frustrating and angering and tiring to see Black communities and other minorities continue to be targets. And you are right - it’s important to speak out against it and also educate our elders too on the Microagressions that might even be prevalent in our own communities and of the world so that we can change and we can continue to support all communities of color in the fight against racism. I’m a mom and the hardest thing I find is having to explain to my mixed kids (my youngest is half Filipino and latinx ) (my oldest is half white and Latinx) why people are racist or why people hate our communities - especially amidst the BLM movement and the terrible things happening in the Asian community amidst the pandemic, but I also know it’s important that they learn about both the negative and the positive in this world so they can be kinder and they can continue the fight. Thank you for speaking out, thank you for using your platform. We are all in this fight together. Juntas podemos hacerlo mejor (together we can do better). I won’t stop fighting for my babies, for you, for the Black communities, for my Latino community, for the Asian communities, for our indigenous brothers and sisters, for all those who consider themselves BIPOC, for our LGBTQIA folx or for the future. ❤️

thank you for sharing your experience, tiffany! my mother who's a nurse has experienced racist comments from her patients, it's honestly baffling and 'upsetting' just doesn't cut it at all to describe it. moving to a lighter note, i can see your adorable desktop icons used for notion too, actually! you're an inspiration, and both artistically and using your space to bring awareness to issues that need to be solved.

thank you for standing up and speaking out!! i'm sorry for your experiences, and i'm glad more people are having these important conversations. and especially in the art and asian communities, we don't have these talks as much and they're so important! speaking up about our experiences is definitely part of the conversation. but i feel like another important part is educating ourselves and standing up for others. the blm traction is definitely dying down, and we still need to show up for our native brothers and sisters on stoping line 3 among other things. but i feel like sharing our experiences is a good first step to get people exposed to the issue, because it all runs so much deeper. personally i've been getting called the n word and chased around the grocery store by anti-maskers or trump supporters. i'm an indian tamil woman and obviously not black. but since being in the US, i have been treated like a black body, and the amount of racism i deal with on a daily has only been increasing every year and i've especially noticed it since trump's presidency. i'm canadian, so i used to have this idea that it wasn't my problem since i wasn't "from here" but the thing is, if you care about others, racism is our problem. and we need to understand the intersectionalities of racism and the history of racism to properly fix the issues within our society. racism isnt confined to one country, or one region, its a worldwide issue and we all need to be doing our part to educate ourselves and protect everyone!

I used to work in a call centre, and I once had an asian lady apologise to me for having broken English and not being able to explain herself fluently in English. I immediately told her not to apologise; she already speaks more languages than I do, and that is a pretty awesome skill to have. I look forward to the day we accept people for who they are as people and not be judgemental based on their appearance/race.

😢 Thank you so much, Tiffany, for sharing from your heart about racism! It helps me a lot to hear this from the point of view of those who are suffering; it helps my understanding and gives me insight into how I might be more sensitive with my own words. I love people of all colors and races and varieties ~ all of us are precious and created by a wonderfully creative God & He loves us all in just the way He created us! So, thank you for your courage and openness. You are precious and your videos make me happy & you inspire me so much! ❤

I've experienced something similar even though I'm white, I moved from Poland to England and couldn't speak English well at the time. Some bullies would ask me why I came to England if I couldn't talk in English and I didn't understand how that was an issue. I hope this is ok for me to share. I think I've caught myself being racist a few times in the past and now I'm so scared I could do it again. I'm very sorry. I'm glad you've decided to talk about it though, I think it makes it easier for people to notice something they said was hurtful. Thank you

You are very strong to say something, whether it be now, later, or even in the past. It's hard to know exactly what's going on when you're in the moment. Once you're away from the situation and can analyze is when the most breaking down of what you went through happens so I 100% understand why it too you until now to say something. No matter what race you are, it doesn't invalidate you in any way. It doesn't make what you do or what you accomplish any less amazing.

Ever since I saw the story about the little old lady who was set on fire last year, I've been paying much closer attention to your community. As a black woman I understand and I just want to hug you and talk about ways for us to all work together and comfort and lift each other up as minority women. Because realistically we're the only sane ones, right? 😉 lol I really appreciate your story and I'm so glad I found you to hear it! Thanks for sharing it! 🤗

I’m so sorry for your experience. I have never gone through something like this but my boyfriend is Vietnamese and we were leaving the parking lot of target once, and a group of what looked like high school guys started yelling “HEY Bruce Lee!” Over and over until we got in the car. We were both shocked but I can’t even imagine what he was feeling in that moment. It’s not ok

You are making an impact on so many people's lives, I just watching your videos. They inspire me to be creative, they inspire me to open up. Your not alone, I've had and still have my share of racist comments made to me or my relationship, its disgusting and disappointing that people think these actions are okay when they are not. We're all human we all have our struggles but we should not beat people down because of something we don't understand, we should listen and share with one another...oh my word this sound so preachy. Anyway love your videos, you keep doing you and ill be tuning for the next vid 😊

First of all, great video as always! Secondly, thank you for bringing this up. As an Italian myself I am extremely sorry about what happened to you and sadly racism towards asians has been increasing a lot this days here. In Italy this is a matter that is almost never discussed and even people around me use racist slur to address asian people a lot, not even realizing that it's offensive most of the time...(which of course does not justify them, it just proves that racism is deeply rooted in our society) Thank you for spreading awareness and I hope you stay safe!
