Artist Interview Singapore features Anjum Motiwala

Anjum commenced her creative pursuit as a fashion designer, manipulating fabric, colour & texture. But destiny had other plans for her. Moving from fabric to canvas seemed like the most natural transition for her. And once she took up the paintbrush, there was no looking back.
Anjum has been painting for over a decade, relishing creative moments with both oils and watercolours, within the genres of realism and abstraction. She enjoys playing around with the palette knife and loves the rich texture and the lustrous effects one can get with the knife and by using an array of different untraditional tools. She draws extensive inspiration from the dynamic rhythm of the nature that surrounds her and strives to re-create that rhythm on the canvas by building a connection between her language of abstraction and her perception of the subject. Her imagery is simple and conveys a form, which is at once creatively vibrant, yet effectively simple. She often surprises and surpasses herself while being open to the unexpected. Memories and previous experiences become fused with ever new questions that arise during the process of creating her art. She is a full-time artist with a desire to create and capture earthy textures, bright bold colours and rich subtle layers of colour in her works.
