Welcome to another Artist Vlog! In this one, I share some new artwork and several canvas paintings currently in progress in the studio, talk to you about some of the handmade watercolours I've purchased that will be featured in future videos, and give you a tour of my watercolour swatch sketchbook. I also filmed part of a beautiful walk in the Surrey countryside that Dominic and I went on the other evening at dusk, under the light of an almost-full moon.

Beautiful swatches again, Natasha. On the Grey/Blacks page, the Daler-Rowney Aquafine Payne's Grey, there is just a _momentary_ flash of brilliant ultramarine at 19:14! Blink and you'll miss it. I wonder if it's one of those things that shows up on camera, but not irl? Love all those DS granulating colours - how delicious!

Hi Natasha! I'm a recent new subscriber and decided to leave a comment bc I just read your comment over on Emma Carpenter's channel - it was the video about starting your art career later in age and I was so touched & encouraged by your comment! (although it wasn't directed at me personally) ❤ I'm 42, a failed marriage under my belt, found new love but who knows what's permanent these days( 😅), my whole life feels like a struggle to figure out a path for me, always feeling like I'm at the beginning stage, still am... but thanks to people like you and Emma I feel so encouraged and inspired~~ thank you! 😻

Hi Haana! I've just subscribed to your channel too - it looks lovely and I look forward to watching your videos. I'm so pleased that my comment on Emma's channel made you feel a little better about your situation. ♡ It has taken me ages to get to where I am now and I still feel like I'm learning so much each year! I think that the great thing about an art career is that it's never too late to start or too late to have success. Sometimes people discover early on what they want to do in life and they're able to make it happen; others are 'late bloomers' and it takes them a little longer for various reasons. It's never too late! After having a quick look at one of your videos, I can honestly say that your work is beautiful. I look forward to following your journey! x

So lovely to see works in progress and to get an insight into how you evolve each piece, the new drawing is really striking with the pink field.The painted stones are a lovely collection and am sure their owner will love them.I thought the abandoned glove on the dusk walk looked like it was giving a thumbs up to the stunning view!. It's strange how different brands of paint can use the same pigments but create totally differnt versions of the same colour.I love my swatchbook it's a really useful resource and can help work out colours to use in a painting,but it also helps evolve colour mixing skills too.Handmade watercolours seem to be coming more popular,and I love the unique colours you can purchase.Branded paints are amazing, but artizan colours hand made by artists have a definate edge of something a bit different.I think we are naturaly drawn to certain colours in our works as we evolve our colour palettes.You do put together really unique colour pallettes.

Thanks Matt! What are you up to this Sunday? I'll be working on the canvas paintings and I have more commissions to be getting on with too. I used to feel very shy about sharing works in progress, but I think it's quite valuable to document the process, and like you say it gives a real insight into how a piece evolves. I can't wait to share the artisan watercolours. I've purchased several from different UK sellers, and I'm really excited to experiment with them! The colours they've created are really special.

@@NatashaNewtonArt I think you showing works in progress will inspire others to think about how they work themselves. I'm updating the portfolio page on my web site which has been live four about three weeks now,I am creating pieces for an open exhibition and I also created and sent in some pieces for the second series of Grayson Perry's art club.Am working in my sketchbooks too.Let me know if you print out the artwork I created for you and frame it.

@@Vanitasmortedigital Oh yes, I need to check out your website! This is great news about the work for Grayson's Art Club and the exhibition. I hope that yours gets chosen for the art club! I will definitely let you know when I print out the artwork - we're in the middle of renovations at the moment so it will be a little while. :)

A very enjoyable video. I like the walk at dusk too. I noticed that Dalar Rowney Paynes Grey gauche gave a brilliant blue flash like it was a metallic colour as you turned it around in the light so I think there is blue in it but it's overpowered by the black. Your videos are inspiring me to pay more attention to the darks.

These swatching vlogs really make me feel that I must go and swatch my own paints and coloured pencils soon! I love to make colour-mixing studies because as you mentioned, doing these exercises really help in knowing what your materials are capable of- like getting to know a friend better😊 Thank you!

I'm finding it such a useful exercise to do - I wish I'd done it sooner! I do feel as though I'm really getting to know my paints, and that feeds into becoming more confident when putting colour palettes together etc. :)

Your vlogs, where you live and your art are all enchanting and mesmerizing! I’m an adult colorist and my Polychromos are my babies! I have the full set of Luminance as well, but I’m not as fond of them. I use them mostly for skin tones (I find a lot of them to be scratchy). I also dabble in watercolor and I’m looking forward to you working in watercolor!
@NatashaNewtonArt

Ah, thank you so much! I'm pleased that you're enjoying the videos. :) Polychromos are great pencils! I find that they last longer than my Luminance due to the harder point which doesn't need sharpening as often. But I do love my Luminance - the colours and texture just seem to suit the way I work!

Hi Natasha. Just found you recently and love your art. Would you mind if I ask a couple of questions ? So coming from the perspective of a watercolor artist I am curious and wondering if the materials you work with are lightfast or permanent ? Will a finished piece last many years ? May I ask if you studied art at university or are self taught ? I love your style and being a detail artist myself I really enjoy viewing your art.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Judith, thanks for your kind words about my art! I always try to buy lightfast, high quality art materials - how lightfast they are is very important to me and there are certain non-lightfast colours I will only use in a sketchbook or for work that isn't going to be sold (obviously, it's ok to use fugitive colours if the main purpose of the work is to be scanned and printed, and you don't sell the original artwork). But I have very few fugitive colours in my collection, as I would much prefer everything I paint to be lightfast and permanent, especially as I sell most of my originals. So yes, all of my finished artworks should last for many, many years! I'm actually self-taught as an artist, and I never stop learning, experimenting, and trying new techniques - that's just one of the many things I love about art!
@judithutter1924
@judithutter1924 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Natasha for answering. I agree on the lightfast and permanence topic. I am mostly self taught myself except for some basic drawing courses at university ages ago. I also took a botanical illustration course from a school in London which helped to jump start my career. If you have time visit my website JudithUtterArt.com . I look forward to watching your future videos I enjoy your wonderful sense of design. Another artist I enjoy in video is Caro Avelaro. She also uses the dots and a lot of circles to express her creativity. Cheers !

Hey Love, great video, perfect for a sunday afternoon, so thank you for that :D if you go to 19:15 theres a split sec of a blue shimmer on the paynes grey by daler rowney :D Can't wait to see the collection grow, ima have to get a little sketchbook like this and do swatches too! Btw I sent you a dm on instagram, when you have a sec please check it some time

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it! I noticed that blue shimmer too while I was editing the video, but when I looked again at the swatch in the daylight today, it's totally black. I wonder whether it was just reflecting the light I was filming by? That paint is also unusually shiny, so I don't know what's up with it! I'll still use it, but just as a black. My inbox on Instagram is a complete nightmare and I miss so many messages - I'll try to find it! :)
