It was really enlightning and helpful. I am trying to get a Fellowship to pursue a PhD in Dance/Performance. It is quite a journey, but when we see other people on-track, we feel more relieved. Thank you.

Hi! Thanks for ur video.I am studying viola performance ,and both of my bachelor and master is only performance. No academic experience, is it still possible to apply this Zürich_Graz program? And I’ve also seen a Bern Künsterische-wissenschaftliche program. Should I just email the supervisor?

@ElinaAkselrud3 ай бұрын

You got the Doctor of Music wrong. You're reading that straight off of Wikipedia! That's not a good source. Some universities, like Florida State University, call the DMA degree a "Doctor of Music". The information you provided here is about the Honorary Doctorate.....just to clarify.

Thanks for the clarification, I hope it will be helpful to someone.

So I take it a DMA is most focused on COMPOSITION itself? I am most interested in this. I haven't even done my masters yet though 😂, but it's good to consider
@ElinaAkselrud Жыл бұрын
I think it might be useful to already start looking around soon and to read about potential schools you might want to apply to. But a lot depends on the particular school/supervisor(s) and on the aspects of composition and its processes/results (?) you want to deeply study. ‘Composition itself’ is slightly too broad to determine anything, (such as ‘performance itself’ - this doesn’t say much without specifications) :) Good luck!

Thank you, Elina! I have a question, may be you know the answer. Could it be a problem, that I have a Master's degree and pre-master education in completely different fields? I have russian specialitet (6 years) in law and and then Master's in Art education with high amount of disciplines near educational management in the sphere of art and music education(2years) and between them I used to studied for 2 years on the course of Musical education (choral conducting specialisation), but didn't finished this particular course(it had to be russian specialitet, 5 years). Thank you for your time.)

It might be a good idea to check with every individual school for their requirements. I could guess that generally it might not work, but again, maybe there are places that would allow that. Maybe think of browsing the requirements for your potential go-to places, email their secretaries/coordinators etc. and it will be much more clear then :) Good luck!

But there is PhD in composition and there is DMA in composition, I’m confused, what’s the difference between these two then…

At the same Uni(s)?

@@ElinaAkselrud yeah, like university of Michigan😂

@@lichaonan Most likely because it’s joint (Composition + Music Theory). When there is a major in theory or history involved (i.e. studying musicology, not only disciplines of artistic/creative practice), it would be a PhD. In the DMA the accent is on composition with a much smaller percentage of theory/musicology, unlike how it is in the PhD program, where the load and the requirements in theory/musicology are much stricter.
@tommymcpheemusic77452 жыл бұрын
@@ElinaAkselrud There are several US universities that have a PhD in Music Composition and a separate PhD in Music Theory; though it is a good point that in some cases when there is a doctoral level program in both the composition program is a DMA.

I am afraid to tell you that you simply recite what Wikipedia tells that has issues regarding credibility; most of scholars including phd students (I believe everybody) do not cite or use wikipedia in terms of conveying academic information. Particularly, wikipedia has wrong information on the Doctor of Music part and many more. In addition, you are wrong to inform about the collaboration of doctorate programs between KUG and ZhdK: please read the description of its doctoral program of ZhdK.
@ElinaAkselrud Жыл бұрын
Feel free to take the time and make a video about the topic, making sure you do everything the way you believe is best. Let’s see if turns out more precise than the info coming from a university assistant at the Doctoral School for Artistic Research at KUG, collaborating directly with KUG AND ZhdK doctoral candidates and being supervised by the director of the Doctoral School at KUG, himself.

I just started to subscribe to your channel, by the way, is it possible to do collaborative work across the country, like doing research in a way to generate local knowledge. I just started thinking about inviting you to our conference as a speaker and sharing your experience in artistic research, what do you think?

Your information is inaccurate and flawed at best. Perhaps you should research the different doctoral degrees in music/music education extensively before attempting to release data that’s incorrect. -Dr. A. D. Beard III PhD, DME, EdD

This comment doesn’t specify any particular issues. Perhaps you should then create your own video about what you call the ‘correct’ information and post the link here, as well as provide the links to all the sources in the description of your video, so you can in fact help other people.

@@ElinaAkselrud, please take your own advice. You post an erroneous (public) video with inaccurate information, and sources that lack credibility. Then you get offended about a response, informing you that your descriptions of each terminal degree is not correct. Shaking my head at the irony. To be quite honest, I was only shedding light about the false narratives that (you’re) stating about doctoral degrees for music education. Consider this my final retort to your rhetoric. “The blind can’t lead the blind”.
