*my art style or preference is kinda all over the place...i'm pretty good at some aspects as after forty plus years even dabbling will hone and refine some level of skill set however basic they started out as...i no longer consider myself an amateur but more of a midscale enthusiast with a smattering of unique skills in a very narrowly focused sort of niche...i do a lot with paper and collage and currently exploring the aspects of watercolor in a serious manner...or rather i've spent a LOT on obtaining professional grade paints to mess about with and building a kit to make the experience more enjoyable and meditative than just a dull slogging through tedious and repetitive exercising of basic techniques....i view the very act of painting or crafting as more than a project or objective oriented goal to make a checkmark by in a book and label it complete before moving on to the next thing...my brain does not work like that... never has...a project is finished when it tells me it is finished or tired of being worked on to conform to my own concepts of what it should be or look like...yeah it can get really frustrating at times and to be honest i have many projects at various stages of complication some stretching back for months or even years just waiting for that last bit of spark or breath of life to finish them... some things come together very quickly others are like swimming through molasses (not that i've actually done that personally...just speaking in a metaphorical sense of the overall concept)...i like old and weathered things...tatty well used objects are in my opinion beautiful especially if it happens naturally so my art kit also reflects that aspect...it's not just the way things look to me but the way they appear to others who see the kit while in use...an unspoken narrative of interesting things or events that have taken place during its travels*

It’s funny, I think the line between amateur artist and professional artist are constantly being blurred. I went to a fairly high brow art gallery showing last year and saw a lot of art that looked like it was clearly done by an amateur, selling their works for thousands of dollars

Maybe because you are looking at technique only. It's about being communicative, evocative and impactful.

I'm very much a pleasure artist. I like to play, and no one (besides family) will ever see it. As a matter of fact, I was horrified one day when my brother brought over a new gal pal, and my sketchbook was out because I had been using it before they came. She picked it up and started looking through it!!!!!!! I was too polite to holler at her to "PUT IT DOWN", so I just sat there thinking she'll go tell all her friends what a crappy sketchbook I had. lol But I got over it quickly, because I'm old and really don't care what people think (for more than a minute or two). I don't aspire to be professional, but I do like to see my work progressing.
