Our Ancient Ancestors said a human experiences two deaths. once when the physical body perishes and secondly whentheir name is no longer spoken. The name of BARRY HARRIS is spoken more and more since the day he passed on...BARRY HARRIS LIVES..................................................................................................

I've been lucky to hear a lot of Barry in live performance with good rhythm sections. He often played solo, without the rhythm section. This is a particularly interesting set, because he played some original compositions that I've not heard him play, and it's all solo piano. This is excerpted from one of several very nice DVDs of Jazz Master Classes at NYU. Each features a performance set like this, an interview, and the guest lecturer's interactions with selected students. Other artists in the series were Benny Golson, Hank Jones, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, and Phil Woods.

I'm an aspiring jazz pianist, but I've been playing (Self Taught) for 4 years. I got into Jazz about a year ago. I wonder how long it would take me to play as humble and as elegantly as Mr. Harris. A wonderful teacher, and a funny one too!
@WilliamSlaght8 жыл бұрын
+Marcus Guyton It'll take you around 10 years to understand everything he's doing to a theoretical level, but to perform it? Depends on your natural talent, hard-work and effort. It can take 10 years to 50 years. All the young cats I see who have amazing technique already are the ones who have been playing since kids.

You can't put a time limit on learning. The best you can do is keep learning as much as you can, and master the basics. There many other factors that go into becoming great, but that's all I can elaborate on for now
@GrumpyStormtrooper4 жыл бұрын
you'll never stop learning, in jazz you're always a student, there's more stuff to seek and find. it's a never ending game.

Play random chords in random voicings and then take your time to listen where the chords will lead you to. Don’t produce, just listen. Wrap yourself in sound. Take time. Play around with 2 5 1... listen. Just listen. Allow for sadness. Give up to know, fingers will figure something out. Life is so short anyway. Soon, we’ll all be gone. To use time for play is the only comfort. No one knows why this is. Cry and be happy, it’s all there is.
